Think Barrack will clear it out over next 2 weeks? Pardon them all? Maybe set them up with condos in the Maldives? Or, maybe he is just too busy now to deal with it?
LOL! It was all because of a Trump tweet that the House abandoned their plans to gut it. After all, he is the new King, per Priebus, right? (Tongue planted firmly in cheek.)
FWIW, this move to loosen the grip of the ethics office was bipartisan. They been trying to do something like this for awhile.
That wouldn't surprise me. It's a pretty tonedeaf move and I'm sure Ryan knew that the party in power would take the brunt of the blame.
Dems plan to delay Trump Cabinet confirmations https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ocrats-plan-to-target/?utm_term=.3ff42c9b7f21
Looks like they backed down on the ethics move. Link. What an idiotic move. Why start with this? If there are real problems with this office, then those need to be hashed out and discussed before it gets gutted. And they don't look better for backpedaling. They look like shoplifters who got caught at the door and had to give back the merchandise they were planning to steal.
Wall/Immigration -- The Trump transition team has asked the DHS to report -- 1. how much money is available to build a border wall 2. whether it could expand temporary immigrant detention facilities 3. about a popular border surveillance program Obama scaled back 4. on every executive order and direction Obama issued since he took office 5. whether DHS altered immigrant records for any reason (including out of civil rights concerns) - aimed at determining whether Obama is trying to protect them from deportation. A 2012 Obama EO gave millions temp legal status (collecting names and addresses as part of the process)
I would have gone the complete opposite direction. Here are two places to start -- 1. Insider trading by Congress and staff 2. PACs
Why wouldn't they be there? He's a former president and she's a former first lady. They should be there, and I would have been very surprised if they weren't coming.
Of course. I don't think there is any recent precedent for a former POTUS to skip an inauguration for anything other than health reasons.
Speaking of Congressional ethics, there is a new report out about a Congressman who was caught misusing campaign money. Because all good is done by Republicans and all bad is done by Democrats, there is no need to wonder which party the guy belongs to -- definitely a Democrat. Link.
NJ, As I've said repeatedly, it doesn't matter R or D, they all succumb. Power corrupts in Washington without regard to party. An option that while it may not cure it will help imo is term limits. Some may say that will only hasten the corruptible I feel it sends a message that as citizens we are sick of it and are trying to take some measure towards control and correction.
Goodness me, what is 2017 bringing with it? I agree with SH! The finances of politics is absurd. I think that by law there should be $s set aside from income tax for ALL campaigning - period, and that should be it. So campaigns can only be for months instead of years like it is now, so what? And yeah I realize how administratively impossible that would be but until we get the PACs, with all the corp lobbying $s neutralized, nothing will ever change. Heck I consider myself of good character but slip me a couple of million and see how my opinion may see a side a bit more clearly. I mean, maybe humans do not have an effect on climate change but sure was hot yesterday.
The fiscal conservative side of me struggles with publicly financed campaigns. I do think we need to limit the power of corporate $$ in campaigns but shelling out more tax $$ isn't feasible to me. At least, I haven't seen a proposal that I could buy into yet. Regardless, PACs need to go away. Citizens United was an abhorrent decision that impact our country for generations. Bring back McCain-Fiengold as the start of a conversation for campaign finance reform.
I agree, and my sarcasm wasn't directed at you. This forum teems with conservatives whose minds are closed to facts and logic. You aren't one of those.
I ask because I do not know. If Citizen's United is done away with would that prevent Unions from spending their hundreds of millions of dollars?
Because it was WIDELY reported right around Christmas on MSM outlets that the only former prez Trump's inauguration could manage to lure was Carter. When one Googles "carter only living president going to trump inauguration" there were countless major outlets reporting on Carter's sole RSVP. Some headlines stuck with the fact that Carter was the only to confirm by then. Others (Time, Snopes, etc) swayed the headline to read Carter was only one coming in another attempt to delegitimize Trump. Either way, it clearly was a Liberal MSM joint effort to stir up Trump bashing. Why such a widely covered story only Carter had RSVP'd with nearly 30 days left until the event? I get if these ran today roughly two weeks out. But come on, 30 days away and the bulk of MSM creates a lame (now proven worthless) controversy right around Christmas. I fully support and expect every former Prez that's physically able to join in the American tradition. This important ceremony should leave political differences at the door. But who knows with sore loser and "Russia did it" syndrome infecting these days.
