Vol Horn 4 Life Good Bye To All The Rest!

I get your point, but comparing us to a program with a 22 year old system and culture is plain stupid. Geno was 12-15 his first year, 14-13 his second year and 17-11 his third year. His first good year was year 4. They lost 11 games in year seven....dang he sucks! They should have fired him then......

I hate the "youth excuse", but it can be a reason for poor performance. What I look for is improvement and despite this year's W/L record I see improvement.

Football has used the "youth excuse" for the last decade as they continued to get worse. Strong just went downhill every year so it was an excuse.

Be as b*tchy and negative as you want, but as your example clearly pointed out it takes a couple years to work things out. If they win less than 15 next year making all the same mistakes again I'll be in your court.

Why? You don't think much of them either. From the texas-vs-bu thread:

Those posts were before and during the BU game......The girls have come on as the season draws near ending. They are showing some spunk. You haven't read my last few posts about them.

Interestingly, met a guy today who played for UT back in the 50s. He and his wife have had season tickets for years. I asked what he thought of Shaka. He just said "My sophomore year we went 4-20. The next year we won the SWC" and then thought a bit more and said "But he sure needs to find a point guard."

They were already strong before the BU game.

UConn women aren't a fair comparison to anyone in the men's side. Not even Kentucky. When your entire team is loaded top to bottom with half the top players (and you get more scholarships to hoard than the men do), it's not that relevant. And their rotation is 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 1 freshman, which isn't particularly young anyway.

And that will last until their next loss. Shall we review your post on the VB team?

Not only is UConn able to hoard the best (kind of like Texas football before scholarship limits decades ago), women's basketball as a national sport at the university level doesn't reach anywhere NEAR the parity amongst men's basketball.

What, the top 20 or so women's are competitive, but then the drop off is
"Yuuggge" as compared to men's top 40 or so, where then the quality of teams below that kind of tapers off, doesn't drop off into Bolivian.

I'd also suggest a similar comparison of baseball versus softball. Men's baseball is highly competitive amongst 100 or so programs or more. Women's softball? Probably no where near that.

Final observation. This year's men's undefeated underdog darling, Gonzaga, is 27-0, including wins over (early, unranked) Florida, 21 ISU, 16 Arizona, 21 St.Mary's, 20 St. Mary's, with remaining games against Pacific, San Diego, and BYU. No other teams Gonzaga played this year were in the top 25.

They may go undefeated regular season, and sweep through their conference toinamint, the powerhouse West Coast Conference, but does anyone believe they'll make it past 2 rounds in the dance?

@Statalyzer I was looking at the Texas basketball fact book for another thread, but I noticed there was a coaching change after that 4-20 season. The new coach won the SWC the next year.

Our volleyball team is top-notch except for the back row play that gets us beat against the nations best. ( plus our serving this year was meh ) That is a fact.

The team is capable of winning any game other than KU. But its not likely with the very poor guard play. Note the shocking doubling of turnovers vs. assists in the wvu game. Guard play is the key for any championship team. For example, the Chicago Bulls started winning championships after Jordan came. Only the best guard ever to play the game. And Houston, with Akeem was good, but needed the great guard play of Drexler, and a committee of other great ones to win it all. Even Dallas had to get Jason Kidd to lead Dirk, et. all to the promised land. Look at the guard play of the spurs which made it possible to bring out the best in their big man. WVU killed us with guard play last night, and so will most everyone else, unless, Jones or Davis have a great surprising performance. Could happen, but the odds are against it.

The old saw, "Wait for next year" has never been a satisfying bit to chew. But at least we do get a decent Point and with a little luck, a shooter emerges from this bunch or next years crop. Can't imagine any realistic scenario where Allen turns his back on double digit millions. So the transfer inside bruiser may have to do. And from what he showed in preseason, he may be enough, along with the new PG, to get the team over the .500 mark. Who knows, maybe into the post season.
I have to give Shaka credit, the kids have not quit, are playing hard, with heart. Just don't have the players yet.

We are 2-6 in February so far. The worst February Barnes ever had, he won 3 games. We have lost 5 in a row including losses to bottom 5 Big 12 teams OU and Kansas State. I think it is more likely teams like Kansas played down to us rather than we played up to them. If we win any remaining games, I will agree this team did not quit. If we finish the year 2-9 in February and March and on a 8 game losing streak, I will not agree with the "they did not quit" statement.

Pulling off a road win at Tech this week would be HUGE for next year, stopping any bad records and ending this year's end of the year downward spiral.

Statesman article about the need for Texas to rally and win a game or two (preferably a road game) before the season ends. Different reasons, but I agree with Cedric Golden that Smart needs to find away to avoid an 8 game losing streak to close the year. Make a win @ Tech, against Baylor or in the Big 12 Tournament or all of the above happen Horns!

Losing out the season is a very real scenario. Assuming Coleman actually signs, PG problem potentially solved; but Allen will most likely leave which leaves us no post threat. One step forward one back. I'm afraid Shaka may be in over his head. Or, the Texas basketball program is cursed.

Allen is 95% out the door. But Osetkowski will be a very decent big. He has good offensive skills, and is very tough and fundamentally sound. He isn't as quick or agile as Allen, doesn't have the upside; but is more polished and seasoned. He is a banger.

Shaka may be in over his head. I don't know. I sure hope not. He needs another couple of seasons to find out. If Coleman does sign, if the forwards develop and can help inside, and if a shooter emerges from the guard chaos that is this year, then who knows? We may be back in the March madness next year. I think we will. But those are a lot of ifs.

He will be here at least 4-5 years for sure. This was always going to be a bad year, he just underperformed in an expected bad year. However, he has plenty of time to turn it around and will have a more experienced team next year. He will not be playing with mostly freshmen. I would like to see us get back to the NCAA Tournament and I think it is achievable. For starters, we will have a real point guard.

Shaka will not be facing any hotseat pressure unless he bombs next year, and even then the pressure would not start until year 4 at the earliest. He has time and just needs to focus on doing what will turn UT basketball into a consistent contender again. He does not need quick fixes.... yet. I will say if he can recruit a Durant level player, even a 1 and done, that kind of quick fix never hurts.

Poor Barnes gets beat up on for only making the second round with Durant, but people fail to realize that was a young team that could have missed the tournament without Durant. If Shaka could bring in game changer one and done (not a Turner developing one and done), that could inject some life into the program while the rest of the team gains experience. The 08 team made the Elite 8 without Durant the next year.

There's really no one left on the board thats attainable. Bamba and Bowen have heated up on other schools. We're just going to be small next year. Shaka is going to have to coach.

We don't need to suffer through two more years. If he doesn't get to the NCAA tourney in his third year, don't waste anymore time on him. You don't need three years to build a college basketball team, you need 6 players.

This has been one of the most disappointing seasons ever. Although one year fairly recently (not doing the research to be exact here) Rick B had a 17-0 start, and was ranked #1. Then weirdly, we went something like 3-7 to finish and then one and done in the NCAA tourney. That may have been the most miserable fail ever for me. That team was pretty talented, had both youth and experience, but Barnes lost them. They sort of gave up on things.

This year's bunch, as poorly and as shockingly unsmart (no pun intended) as they often play, never gives up. Always has energy and plays hard with heart. They play the number one team in the country and lose by 10 (and we are nowhere as good as only ten worse), then we beat ISU, clearly better than us, and lose double digit games by 5 or less points.

They play hard enough to win, but don't know how to finish. Don't know how to NOT turn it over down the stretch. (how many times have I seen roach literally throw the ball into the stands; way up into the stands too!)

Honestly, I don't know if Shaka can coach at a high level. I do know that he can engender loyalty, sacrifice, hard work and take it to the mat effort. We'll see in a year of so if he can coach as well as he can motivate.

Texas just beat TTU in the B12 tourney. Texas, #10 seed beats ttu, #7 seed going away in the second half on a 30-10 run. This comes after a nauseating, horrifically bad first half. Like some have said, this team plays with heart and never quits. Even after some of the most boneheaded play, that definitely triggers an "oh well, this one's over" reaction in many fans (me included) they somehow pick themselves up off the mat and pull this drowning cat out of the water and resuscitate it. I give them credit for guts and heart. If they could only play some organized, disciplined offense then who knows...

By the way, to those who took the Dramamine and watched, how about that alley oop dunk by Roach. Roach had two monster dunks, but that alley oop is likely to make sportscenter highlights.

So, tied at 29 with about 3:30 left in the first half, and WVU goes on a 10-1 run to end the half. This team is incapable of getting a "feel" on momentum shifts and wrangling in stupid mistakes. The defensive shifts are lazier than anything we ever saw under Barnes, including his mediocre years.

While I continued to watch and secretly hope I checked out about mid January on really caring. It sucks that we had a possible lottery pick talent in Allen and did literally nothing all year long.

In my dreams Taylor stayed and this team challenged KU all year long for the Big XII and is going into the tourny as a three seed with a darkhorse shot at the final four, in my fevered mind addled dreams.:brickwall:
