It's great to read and hear about the relief fund being started by JJ Watt and his proposal that proceeds from Thurs Houston / Cowboy game
be contributed to Houston area residents. Noticed that the fund he started yesterday is sitting at 450K. Hoping that many others will jump on board to help. There are probably other organizations and individuals that are involved in similar ways. Poor or wealthy, we all can help even if it is only a small amount.

As of Wednesday afternoon, JJ's relief fund has passed $6 million and he has raised the goal to $10 million.

    Now it's at $9.7 million

I like how he is doing it, bypassing the Red Cross

Last time Red Cross collected money for Houston, they took a chunk of that money and used it in Florida and on the east coast. No thanks, plenty of other places to donate and insure the money comes to Jefferson, Harris, and surrounding counties plus the Coastal Bend.

I love the heat for giving and helping, but this is my biggest concern. How do we know the $ we donate is going to real people in need? How does any agency discern between people who really had a house flooded and those who just have a Houston address? They can't possible check everyone. How do we know the $ isn't just going into some political criminals pocket? I certainly appreciate JJ, but I think I'll stick with sending my $ to Star of Hope or where else I know exactly where the $ is going.

    $12 million...Awesome!!!

It is called faith and trust even when you don't really know. Yes, most have been burned by someone using funds differently than we expected but somewhere, even in this crazy selfish world, we must have trust and faith in others and along the way we hope others will have the same in us and our intentions and words / actions.

and it is too bad that some organizations and individuals choose to ignore or intentionally deprive or deceive others.

I trust JJ to do things right. I do NOT trust the Red Cross even though they claimed on television this morning that the pledge callers can specify where they want funds spent.

I also do NOT believe Red Cross assertion that 91 cents of every dollar goes to actual relief efforts.

There are local efforts that Mom and I will be donating to, including some of the animal shelters.

One of the attorneys in my building is former HPD and was discussing how quickly supplies were put into use out of the donations taken in at the Police Union building. Officers were coming in with socks squishing and needed clean, dry socks (in addition to food). Remember that, in addition to busting their asses trying to protect the region, they also have MANY who have ALSO lost everything.

Have not had a chance to confirm, but mom told me this morning that, due to the overwhelming size of JJ's fund, it was now going to the Red Cross. If true, that disappoints me.

I will continue to look for local groups. An additional thought that I had overnight was looking at local/regional mental health groups that will be seeing MANY first responders in the coming months as they require assistance to deal with the horrors they have witnessed.

Mom is also wanting to send something to the groups like the Cajun Navy that showed up without a single obligation to have done so.

Best example of an NFL Player in current era. Doing a thing that matters and that is in sync with human nature and reality on the ground. Too often our good intentions are caught up in the ethers.

Folks I’ll leave this here and move on, so no return fire from me on this.
I know someone who knows Jerrah, and he is very generous.
Like pays for a $5 sandwich and gives a $95 tip. Often. Very caring guy.
Let’s scale that, when’s the last time you gave someone a $15 tip on a $5 bill?

If u don’t do so regularly, then you need to look in the mirror before talking poorly about a perceived greed, that’s baseless.

Speaking of scaling, Jerry Jones' net worth is $5,600,000,000 ($5.6 Billion):

    https://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/jerry-jones-net-worth/

Assuming a typical net worth +/- of someone in their 40s-60s, should be around $100,000 to $500,000 or so, Jerry's ability to pay compared to the average Joe would be $5,600,000,000/$500,000 or about 11,200 times the average Joe.

If an average Joe would tip $15 on a $5 tab, then JJ should tip 11,200 times $15 or $168,000.

    Just scaling.

point- and not directed at you Blon-is that we tend to cast stones without first examining our own lives.
The scale I was referring to, is directed at me. Just one example of his generosity- on a personal level.i also thought is was cool.still do.
I am speaking more of myself, here BTW.

No problem, just I appreciate more the working stiff who on Friday afternoon, buys a couple of beers, for about $10 with tax now, and showing appreciation for the server doing a good job, adding not just say $5 for a tip, tosses in another $5.

IMHO that $5 means a whole lot more than someone like Jerry Jones being able to toss down $95 on a $5 tab.

Not jealous of the rich, just more appreciative of the rank and file Joes who contribute when it might hurt a bit as compared to the actual dollar amount.
