Someone on this WBB board posted that they would not support a Mulkey-led team. Hmmmm. So, if Mulkey gets hired at Texas what are you going to do?

Just like Briles was never going to be the HC at Texas, neither is Mulkey. The permissive Baylor behavior standards of their athletic programs are on a level far below Texas standards. Briles could not clear recruiting and conduct issues and neither can Mulkey.

I just looked it up and Karen Aston's salary is $775,000. Mulkey's is over $1 million. I don't think UT would allocate that kind of money to the WBB job anyway.

Btw, Geno Auriemma makes over $2 million per year and interestingly Jeff Walz makes ... $775,000.

Interesting. Good point but I also think Texas fans are tired of not dominating in the Big 12 and second, not getting past the Elite Eight. I agree with you though. Maybe Mulkey can be rehabilitated. :)

Yep, and Mulkey was at a reported $1.85 million base per the USA Today to give a little more detail.

Coach Aston is recruiting at a high level, she just has to convert when it counts. When Imani was in Austin, she never developed to her full potential IMO. UT had twin towers during that time but couldn't get to the Final 4 or consistently win the Big 12 when they had the roster edge over Baylor IMO.

Great insights. Gotta get the kids for sure but also gotta do something with the kids when ya get em. I didn't appreciate the Mulkey comment about "10 All Americans" but it def speaks to a solid point. I do see a different level of player development between the two programs, which obviously explains some results. Hope we can improve in that area real soon and that Coach Aston keeps improving as a coach.

This is a crazy post started by OP. Mulkey doesn't want to be the head coach at UT and UT doesn't want her. Feeling is mutual. Nothing to discuss here but silly speculation.

Cough-cough-cough look up Gail Goestenkor's salary from 6 years ago:
    http://www.dailytexanonline.com/sports/2012/03/19/goestenkors-leaves-texas-after-five-seasons
It was just a week ago that women’s athletic director Chris Plonsky stood by Goestenkors, saying she would indeed remain coach of the Longhorns for the remaining two years of her seven-year, $8.75 million contract.

Flip side, KA is going to be getting up there with bonuses for this year:

It's like saying, "If Satan, who could guarantee you 5 championships in 10 years....." C'mon. Texas knows what winning with class is about and wouldn't even sniff that.

Baylor on the other hand is WIN-AT-ALL-COSTS. All will be forgiven at Sunday chapel.

I was the one who wrote that. It's a far-fetched hypothetical but I will answer: I would absolutely stop attending/watching games or following the program at all. It would also make me question the Texas Athletics department as a whole - just like hiring Art Briles to coach FB or John Calipari for MBB would. Make no mistake - I love winning and hate losing but there are limits. I played for quite a few winning coaches growing up and I can remember being kicked by one of them as I came off the field in a peewee football game for committing a personal foul in a game we were dominating and, as I grew older, seeing coaches bench some of my more talented teammates for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Imani has repeatedly taken ownership of her development or lack thereof at Texas. Both have said she and Karen had a love/hate relationship because Imani wasn't serious enough about basketball until late in her junior year. Imani only got 8 starts in 27 games her junior year so it seems Karen found a way to get through to her eventually.

And our two relatively-new posters wonder why their posts aren't well-received on here . . .

As Racer said above, both Gail and Mulkey were among the first, if not the first, Big 12 WBB coaches to hit $1 million dollars in salary. I don't recall which was the first one to get that salary. Not sure, and I am not going to look it up, if any other Big 12 coach is at $1 million now, except maybe Coach Coale of OU?

I don't wonder why my posts aren't well-received. It's a message board! Are ya'll serious? Stop trying to control the way people think, what people post, and how people respond. I'm not running for Senior Class President. Seriously, get real. Some of you act like you've invited folks to your dinner party and they insulted your chicken on a stick! This board is NOT your house. You do not make the rules. No one here has to agree with one thing on this board. It is our right to disagree. It is our right to agree. If you're uncomfortable with disagreement, that is NOT anyone else's problem. Perhaps YOU should consider starting a board where the only people who are allowed are those who agree with you or see things as you see them. Wow! I can assure you I am not going anywhere. Why can't we simply respect the diversity of thought and opinion? Seems reasonable to me.

Texas has the right coach without the baggage KM would bring..

Her comments are so out of line....guess she has to say derogatory things to make her feel better....bet her blood pressure hits the sky.

I don't mind new posters, love getting them in fact. I just have to learn which posts are worth reading and which are here to provoke, so I can skip them quickly. It's not hard.

Gotta say, the lack of success for GG was NOT her fault...if she had been able to keep Travis and Clarissa, she would still be here...but water under the bridge, am very happy with Aston, who WILL take us to a NC!! As for the Brazos Hag...NO WAY Texas would ever scrape the bottom of that trash barrel !!

There is no chance that Mulkey would ever even be considered CP was asked multiple times (after Jody and after GG) if she'd considered any other B12 coaches and she said "no thought of that what so ever". Having talked to her and understanding what she looks for and expects of UT coaches aside from excellence in their sport but pillars of their communities and ambassadors for the brand that is the university of Texas, we can unequivocally say KM doesn't fit that bill.

Have to agree with you on this one. I've heard from a very reliable source that Gail was SO micro managed by Plonsky, and was told to start over with a new staff instead of keeping any of Conradts assistants.

    Sigh. This post again.

I have a better chance becoming the next coach at Texas than Mulkey. Texas has a coach - let’s start there.

And Texas would never, ever hire a coach who behaves like Mulkey. Never.

Now let’s discuss what happens if Texas hires Geno. Same odds.

If TX hires Geno we win a championship within 3 years.

Love him or hate him he's an excellent coach.

Some of y'all are super sensitive when it comes to mulkey and her comments. Mulkey shoots straight from the hip. You don't have to worry about what she's thinking. She's going to tell you. She's that person at work or in your family that says what everybody is thinking. I don't have any problems with her comments. She's not a great orator. She's a kick a$$, take names kind of coach. Love her or hate her, what you see is what you get with her.

I am among those who still feel bad things went as they did with Coach Gail. She is so smart and personable. I couldn't believe the top players didn't want to come play for her here. Hearing her call the games in the SEC tournament, which she did superbly, reminded me how impressive she is. With Jody, Gail, and Karen we have gone the high road.

Gail didn’t recruit. That’s why she wasn’t successful. Karen is a master recruiter. That’s why she’s succeeding. Hopefully her coaching skills will catch up with her recruiting skills.

While this is true, we've got to honest about why that was that Gail all of a sudden "couldn't recruit" after 6 straight top 10 classes at Duke. She had some powerful coaches/influencers who were actively working against her and sandbagging her on the recruiting trail. Clarissa Davis comes to mind. Without that, we get both the Ogwumike sisters and Meghan Simmons. Hindsight is 20/20 but I don't think anyone can dispute the profound impact they would've had on the Texas program.

Know that I say this having heard directly "from the horses mouth" in both of those instances in particular.

Every coach in every sport across the country encounters this. For whatever reason GG didn't produce for Texas. Yes, there appears to have been interference by some in the Texas Athletic Department (which finally is being addressed), but GG was still responsible for recruiting and producing.

utfannforlife and Viperhorn --- Thank you for explaining as best you could what happened with Gail. It just never made sense to me on the face of it why players didn't want to play for her here, when they certainly flocked to Duke to be on her team.
