The story I always heard was Akina was recruiting him as a safety and brought him to Mack's attention as QB.
Mack felt good about the recruits he had and didn't really even take a look at him.
He was never really on the radar as a QB recruit for the Horns.

We just didn't need 2 QBs that year. We were deep at QB. And Ash, God love him, was a good get. We give Colt credit that he could have won that Alabama game if not for the injury. We should give Mack some credit for the Ash/Manziel situation because of Ash's concussions.

    :e-thinking:
I can't remember being deep at QB since we had Colt and the kid who ended up transferring to Ole Miss.
Who else did we have in the fold? Case McCoy and Tyrone Swoops?

Still agree Mack deserves credit for dodging Manziel. Just not for depth reasons.

I don't think JFF's antics in college were any worse than a lot of Mack's player's problems. Sergio Kindle crashing his car into an apartment building and abandoning it and then probably lying about what really happened comes to mind, but there were plenty of others to choose from. College kids gonna be college kids. They do stupid stuff. Remember?

Again, and I quote the response during my phone call, "He's a turd"

That would explain why Akina identified with him, even more so if the turd was sent to pathology and revealed a cancer.

In response to some of Mack's recruits being worse, Manziel would have been an embarrassment to any team not coached by Schnellenberger, Erickson, Beamer, or Osborne, yet he was still no Robert Joseph.

There was a story a couple of years back that jff had a handler with him all the time he was at aggy. Once he got into the league, he was on his own and his antics eventually cost him his job. Last I heard, he's on his way to Canada and wants to show that he's "self cured" and capable of playing ball again, so an NFL team will pick him up. Self cured, my bloody ***. But, I wish him all the bad luck in the world, I really do.

Jevan Snead was the backup guy in 2006 before he transferred. We had Gilbert as the backup to Colt in 2009.

If only Snead had redshirted and stayed at UT, he might have won a national title, been the full time starter in 2010 and who know after that. Instead we live in the age of the transferring quarterback... a problem that plagues just about every team.

They all see themselves as NFL fist round draft picks and want playing time to showcase their pro quality skills. Some transfer for a shot, declare as juniors, maybe get a shot, don’t make it winding up as a backup in the arena league.

I was also thinking Eric Dickerson.
And Adrian Peterson had his way as a man amongst boys in a crowded East Texas pool of players.

Sorry, who is EJ Holland, and what gives him the right to call out the Aggies on recruiting as if he represents The University in any capacity? As I recall we enjoyed some positive recruiting results last year, but weren't wanting to trash talk our "friends" in Tuscaloosa or Columbus.

The Aggies created their own misery by allowing a few BMDs to hire an inferior HC, but he has added three stellar hires, who will be kicking *** in recruiting in the coming year, not to mention that Dickey has forgotten more offense than Beck will know if he coaches until he is 150.

Holland needs to quit acting like an Aggie and go buy some him class since he obviously didn't have any instilled by his parents.

I sometimes wonder, now that all the dust has settled with regard to Manziel, how we should look back at all of that had it been us instead?

In the beginning, as Manziel had early success at aggy, Texas fans grumbled about how Mack Brown only "offered him as a safety." This became an often repeated line and internet joke. This was compounded by (1) our suffering at the QB position ever since (including Mack Brown not returning Jameis Winston's phone calls) and (2) Manziel winning the Heisman (followed the next year by Winston winning it).

But, by my recollection at least, the UT fan group sentiment began to change with each new incident of Manziel acting badly. By the time of Manziel's spectacular flame out in the NFL, we had regained the upper hand with aggy over Maziel and were once again able to point and laugh at them. And his behavior has been only worse since then (to the point of becoming scary). At this point, I dont even know (or care) if aggy is still happy with him or embarrassed by him.

I am somewhat interested, however, in how we look back at that ourselves? How should we? What would our collective position be now if we had offered him as a QB (we were his fav school), he had success here as a QB and won us another Heisman? And yet still became the same jerk that he is today.

If JFF had fulfilled his childhood dreams and become a Longhorn (and assuming Mack would have let him play QB), he would have saved us from much of the on-field suffering we experienced in those days, since much of which was caused by our lack of a QB. If so, he might have/probably would have single-handedly saved Brown's job (for a while longer at least) and possibly even got him another extension (our old AD did love extending his coaches).

The other view is that we dodged a bullet and that, despite our desperation for a quality QB for so many seasons, we are still happy he was never a Longhorn. He simply was not worth the drama.

I tend to think that had Manziel done the same here (win games for us, win the Heisman) that we would be more forgiving of his subsequent troubles. We do that with VY now. While Vince has never been a Manziel-level jerk, he has had multiple embarrassing, self-inflicted problems since he left early for the NFL. Despite all of that, every man, woman and child still forgives him and loves him to this day -- all for what he did for us while he was here.

Do we have a consensus on this?
    Or not?

Comparing VY to JFF (as far as behavior goes) is like comparing apples to a dumpster fire that is full of adult diapers at a nursing home

VY may not be perfect, but his NFL success was more (he did have some success in spite of the narrative!)
And his NFL failures off the field were largely exacerbated by a petty stupid little mulletted man who had no interest in helping him at all. We'll never know what VY could have done if he had played under just about any other coach in the NFL.
    But that is

    (1) I noted Vince was never as bad as JFF but their stories share a similar arc (Vince was stiill getting himself arrested as of 2 years ago)
    (2) You avoided answering the actual question posed

Fans tend to be much more forgiving of their own players, especially if they were winners. It's kind of like parents not finding fault with their own little angels. I work with a Florida. St guy who is still a big J. Winston fan despite the rape allegations, shrimp stealing, and all the rest.

JFF wasn't that bad in college. His problems began after college. He couldn't handle the instant fame and money. I suspect if he'd attended UT, the fan base would be supportive.

I do agree as fans in general we are more forgiving. But even when I consider my own bias, I still think its an unfair comparison from VY to JFF. Their issues are not that similar. Ricky William's issues might be a better comparison. And yes to your point we have been really forgiving of Ricky.

Johnny isn't my ideal team leader, but I see his brokenness sympathetically. I would have taken him. I wouldn't have taken Baker.

But this is my aTm/ousux rivalry comparison in a nut shell... aTm is jv. I tease them, make fun of them, but they're like the little brother. I'm fine when they are good.

I'd be fine with OU lost every game for 5 years regardless of how it affected our conference. They can suck it. And I can't stand that pecker, Mayfield. OU SUX

Two words about our fanbase's forgiveness:

TONY EDWARDS - AND HE WAS NOT GUILTY! The midget Mexican police officer was fired after admitting he beat the crap out of him after he was handcuffed, admitted to hating blacks, hating Texas football players.

The following Saturday in Floyd Casey was the most embarrassed I have ever been to be a fan of The University of Texas.

I don't know the story behind this but why is the race and height of the police officer significant to you?

Because race and size were his justification for the beating and accusations against Edwards.

He says he wont or does not want to go to the CFL. But it seems like a great way for him to get it done, to prove himself. And it sounds like June Jones is ready to install him as the starter. Their season begins in early June. In the NFL, he will probably be holding a clipboard.

    4th_floor Dude, where's my laptop?

It's not a matter of forgiveness. VY and JFF both are trainwrecks. Well maybe VY is only a 3 car pileup. The difference is when I hear about JFF shooting off yet another toe, I shake my head and laugh. When VY screws up, I take it a little more personally. I get a little embarrassed for him and a little angry at him. But I'm almost always pulling for him. I assume I would not be laughing at JFF if he had been a great Longhorn.
