We can only speculate, but I wonder if any of Manziel’s behavior issues at A&M could be attributed to a more enabling culture under Sumlin than what he would have had under Mack. Who knows.

If JFF had been successful at UT and won a Heisman I’m sure most Texas fans would be far more lenient in their judgments of him.

Which, of course, would be very Aggie-like.

Or more human nature-like to be biased in favor of one of our own.

Maybe. However, I have never been as big a VY fan as many after he didn't return for his senior season. A huge mistake that contributed to the downfall of the program, IMHO.

    Really?
You blame VY for the downfall of the program?
Remember when we played for the MNC with Colt at QB?
Now, while I don't blame VY for striking while the iron was hot and getting paid, I think it would have been beneficial for his maturation as a man to stay for his senior season.
But to put the downfall of the program on his shoulders is a bit much.

I didn't blame him. I said his not returning contributed. That isn't an outrageous opinion.

We played for a National Championship four years after VY left.
The downward spiral began after that.
Mack's depression and lack of recruiting started it.
To interject VY into that may not be outrageous but seems a little ridiculous.

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, as am I. Again, I did not blame VY, said his early departure contributed. Most feel we would have played for the NC in 2006 had he stayed. We may have played for 2 more with Colt. Who knows? Colt's body was pretty beaten up by the time we got to that NC against Alabama. Maybe the extra year as the backup may have prevented that.

To disagree that VY leaving early did not contribute to the eventual downward spiral could b considered a little ridiculous as well. Is it not fair to think that Mack's "depression" may have started the day VY declared for the NFL?

No, it is not, as Mack has publicly stated that it was after the loss to Alabama that he suffered from some depression.

There were many bad decisions and bad breaks that led to the decline.

According to Tom Lugenbill and other recruiting gurus the jameis Winston/UT deal was way overblown. He was always going to go to FSU or Alabama. Regardless of what he said we had no legitimate shot. None.

Make that three wins. One for the team scoring 30, another win because it came against an sec team and yet another because losing to an sec team is a win. :brickwall:

    I’ll jump into the fray...

While VY’s early departure was a disappointment, I personally don’t think that it had anything to do with the program’s demise. We played for a NC in 2009, and had it not been for a dropped lollipop interception at Lubbock in 2008 — after a juggernaut 4 game run that year — we would have played for one in 2008. Those were great teams.

Mack’s biggest miscalculation IMHO was the decision to scrap the zone read after 2009 and attempt to mimic Alabama. That, and perhaps his lack of passion at the same time on the recruiting trail.

I always like your posts. I am just saying I think it contributed, maybe not in a huge way, but imagine what could have been had he returned, like he said he would. I like what he did at UT, my point was that I am not blinded by his being a Longhorn.

    Me either.
I've come to believe that VY is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and that has to do, as much as Fisher being a dick, with him having a short lived NFL career.
This is also why I agree with him leaving early.
He had no chance of making that kind of money outside the NFL.
I just don't agree that he contributed in anyway to the decline of the program.
As dukesteer and myself have pointed out, the program remained strong after he left, playing for another championship and barely missing playing for two more in the next four years.
The Bama loss took something out of Mack and things soured after that.
I also agree that discarding the spread was a big factor.

Oh yeah, they love him like the cheatin' wife that is ready to come back home and really settle down this time. They're ready to give him a second (or third or fourth or whatever this one is) chance. Seriously, I hope he gets his life straightened out.

Behind Bobby Layne, VY is the winningest UT quarterback in NFL history. Granted he couldn't handle money, know when to call Uber, or stay away from the Cheesecake Factory. But he came back and got his degree and I'm personally glad he is on the payroll.

Anyone with any insight has said Jamis was never coming here since his recruitment. Texas did contact him and he was not interested. The man had no character and came up with a "Texas didnt recruit me" lie as a gimmick for his Heisman campaign as he was copying the Manziel and RGIII campaigns. Despite the fact it has been refuted over and over, the "jamis wanted to come to Texas and Mack didnt recruit him" zombie lie continues to live on. Anyway, I am glad that he did not want to come here as I would not have wanted a person of such extremely low character, far lower than Manziel.
