I was thinking about this question earlier this am. I am old enough to recall the 1971 Baltimore Orioles 4-man rotation who are, to me at least, still the standard (sorry Braves) --
    Mike Cueller (20-9, 3.08) (ex-Astro :idk:)
    Pat Dobson (20-8, 2.90)
    Jim Palmer (20-9, 2.68)
    Dave McNally (21-5, 2.68)

As to the 2018 Astros, I concluded that I care much more that they stay healthy and go into the playoffs well-rested than I do 20-win seasons. Bit its pretty cool to think about

The Astros won 65 of their first 100 games. The last defending WS champ to do that was the '68 Cardinals.

He did, however, make me money on Sunday...sadly, I expected he was due for an implosion so I had to take LAA and the over. I also got 1.5 on the run line. Doubled my money on that game...

A few of the starters have been getting tagged hard of late...I hope it is not fatigue setting in or that they are somehow tipping pitches.

Well we finally dumped Giles but I am not real hyped about who we are getting in return. Doesn't seem like our kind of guy. Verlander was not real impressed, either, based on his comments to ESPN.

I agree FW. What was accomplished? Osuna's suspension was just up on Sunday so he is a ways from being available to pitch. However, his trial is scheduled for tomorrow so everything will be out in the open if that comes about. I would think Houston's legal team is doing everything possible to get his legal counsel to move to postpone the trial until after the season or reach a plea deal that will let him play.

To be fair, if the Yankees or Dodgers traded for Osuna, nobody would bat an eye.

I disagree on this one. If what he is accused of is even half true he is in big trouble.

In years past you would be right, not in this environment today.

Houston already has one of two best teams in baseball and the question I have is does Osuna really put Houston that far ahead of Boston that he is worth the headache and problems.

For a front office and management team that has done literally everything right the past 18 months I think this is just a huge and unnecessary mistake by Luhnow.

Except for Gomez I agree with you. That guy was not our kind of guy and I knew it when I saw his first interview as an Astro. I will reserve judgement on Osuna until I see his first interview. Ken Giles did not work out but I thought it was a good move at the time.

I love Jake. His HR saving catch yesterday was good stuff as well.

Astros release an "official" statement on the subject.

They did it already -- Chapman to Yanquis
And it went like you predict

With Osuna, it was not such a big media event when it was in Toronto. But it is now.

What are you going by there for "what he is accused of doing?"

The Canadian equivalent of a charging statement still has not been released. What was released that I saw looked pro forma. And my understanding of Canadian criminal law is that he was charged with the lesser of three possible levels of assault offenses. While its true MLB hit him harm with the suspension, they likewise gave no facts.

He has never admitted guilt and his attorney thinks he might get him off. He is after what they call a "peace bond" which is a sort of Canadian promise that you're going to be a good citizen in the future and is something they often let first-time offenders, like Osuna, off with. If it isn't granted, the attorney says Osuna will continue to plead not guilty and go to trial. If this is true (which I concede might not be the case) then its an indication they have some facts on their side (because they certainly have no good will to trade on).

So anyway, what do you know about what he is supposed to have done that the media does not?

    Examples --

Toronto police declined to say whether it was domestic assault. Constable Jenifferjit Sidhu said the charge is for one count of assault but provided no further details.

Details are scant at this point, so it’s far too soon to assess the situation. The precise nature of the allegations, possible range of legal ramifications, and potential for league punishment are all completely unknown publicly.

Joe, I qualified what I said with an "if" and stand by that. The charge was assault, and MLB knew enough to suspend him for domestic violence for 70 games. However, to the PC police, everyone is guilty until well forever while every defense attorney represents an innocent person (that is what they have to believe).

The point that has to be made is the trade did nothing for the Astros so why bring all of this on yourself? Why would anyone have traded for Giles? A big unforced error.

As we have seen in MULTIPLE sports, mere arrest for an offense with assault in the title is enough for a league to take action, facts of the matter be damned. Sadly, there has been more than one instance of knee-jerk suspensions without anything resembling due process having attached.

The disposition being contemplated, as reported in the media, seems to be on par with a deferred disposition such as we routinely see in courts here in Texas on a daily basis. Stay out of trouble for the defined period of time and the case is dismissed. Some judges will allow the Defendant to enter a plea of nolo while others require a plea of guilty to be entered.

In a domestic situation, many defendants that insist on trial are banking on the fact that the other party will decide not to come to court. In the absence of the victim, as defined in the offense report, proving up the offense becomes a far more challenging task for the prosecutor. Additionally, the greater amount of time one can create between incident being reported and incident being disposed of works in the favor of a defendant who can keep themselves out of other trouble.

I readily admit to knowing little of the claims in the Osuna case. I am presuming that we DO NOT have video like the numbnuts from the farm club that beat the hell out of the girlfriend/fiancee and was captured on video doing so (or alternately, like the Ray Rice beatdown that opened to the door to punting due process to the side).

As to did little...Osuna did benefit from the MarGon bomb and got the win last night. Giles was not likely coming back to the big club...he had become a head case. I wish him well elsewhere and hope he can get his career back on track. Absent a conviction in a criminal court, Osuna deserves the same opportunity. He may prove to be no better than Giles, but he also is unlikely to be the human gas can that Giles had turned into this year...

That's true, you did use the qualifier if -- "If what he is accused of is even half true he is in big trouble."
But my question is the same, what is it that he has been accused of?
    Half of what?

He is being accused of "assault". That covers a myriad of personal attacks from what we would call bullying to a personal attack short of murder. Also, we do not know the lesser charges that usually follow an assault charge. MLB saw enough to classify it as domestic violence so they either talked to the Canadian authorities or did their own investigation.

AJ is finally listening to me - my boy Hector Rondon got the saves against SF by putting up zeroes in the 9th of both games. So, for right now, Osuna is not our closer, Rondon is.

Yeah as soon as they made Rondon the closer, he started blowing saves.

That was a very good series with Oakland. The As are so much better now than they were the past few seasons.
