Ack! I had wondered if this might occur.

Well that sure sucks, both for her and for the Longhorns. If it has to be something though, I'd rather it be a broken bone than a torn ligament. Much shorter recovery period.

    Get well soon Sedona!

Man that is terrible news...sigh. I knew something was wrong when I tuned in and couldn't see her in game or on bench. Couldn't understand commentary. Run Pincher, do you have any idea on the recovery time window?

Sickening news. A major blow to our team. Good chance she'll redshirt?

When I've been watching the videos out of Cooley, I've thought, "Hey, no Sedona?" Then, I've reminded myself she was playing for the USA. But then I thought, "Ugh, what if she gets hurt playing for them?" But then, we've have current players who played in the summer for USA, and came back with no problem.

But seeing that tweet about her injury, I went "gulp". Then I thought, "Well, happened in Mexico City, could well have happened in Cooley. And she wanted to rep her country, so that's that"

An later I thought, "Well, I guess that answers the question if we'll see 4 bigs in the game at the same time or how they would weigh playing time for the 4 bigs."

Requires surgery? I assume that means it was worse than a simple fracture.

Good chance Sedona redshirts this year since surgery is needed. Could be up to six-seven month recovery period. Depends on the type of fracture and what is done during the surgery.

Racer and DFW_Horn, I would like your posts above but they are just too depressing for now.

As a silver lining, I guess it's better that this happened this year as we have Jatari, Joyner, Mide and Charli. Next season we will really need Sedona. Plus we aren't recruiting any centers/posts for 2019 so it gives us a cushion between 2019 and 2020 when we hope to land Gusters or another center. Regardless, it's a bummer that this happened.

It sure seems that we've been snake bit at the 4 & 5 position over the past two years; Joyner's absence during 2017, Audrey Anne's injury at the end of the season and Rellah's suspension/transfer.

Oh well. Injuries happen to all teams at some point. Here's to a successful surgery and a speedy recovery for Sedona.

Not to mention Kelsey's and Imani's injury plagued careers going back a little further.

Unless the rules have changed it doesn't work that way. Medical Redshirts are after all eligibility is used. So she will redshirt this season; then get the Medical Redshirt at the end of her eligibility. The MRS basically extends the 5 years to get 4 years of eligibility into 6 years to get eligibility in. I don't believe that the MRS year counts against the scholarship total.

Another slight silver lining - her family is in nearby Liberty Hill for added support and encouragement.

She remains as part of the team; so, yes it counts towards the maximum 15 'ships per roster per season. It doesn't count if she were to be a medical retirement like Diannia Akigbogun.

It doesn't count against the total Mooooo (redshirts do):

Medical exemption is the same as medical retirement that Mooooo was referring to - the key phrase is “that ends their career” like Diani.

I was judging from my own experience, back on the field at 90% in 7 weeks with a broken bone. 6 month recovery with torn ligaments. However, I guess when you're 6'7" you have to have surgery to put a rod in your leg. I just hope she can come back stronger than ever. We really needed her height this year though. Jatarie can't play every minute and she's not really a great rebounder either. It's going to be tough against teams with a great inside game.

Agree that Sedona could’ve provided a great presence in the paint off the bench but I think you might be shorting how valuable Jatarie is when it comes to rebounding as a team. Texas isn’t 4th in the nation in rebounding margin without her ability to get a strong body on the opponent’s big allowing someone like Joyner or another teammate a better chance at the rebound.

    Sorry, you are wrong.

Medical Exemption is the NCAA's technical term for a medical redshirt. Medical Retirement means just that - no more playing. Neither count towards the scholarship limit. The reasons are: (i) Medical Redshirt (Medical Exemption) comes after all eligibility has been used (which means the athlete has to stay around for 6 seasons), and (ii) a doctor has to certify the injury and the conference/NCAA has to approve the designation (in theory eliminates cheating).

The Medical Retirement rule lets a school keep the athlete on scholarship.

Then we’re both wrong because the very definition you posted above for Medical Exemption said “an injury or illness that ends their career.”

Viper, the key phrase here, as both DFW_Horn and Moooooo refer to, is "that ends their career". Sedona will still have five years to play four, hence her redshirt year without the need for an additional sixth year.

Take Jamie, for example. She retired from Stanford due to medical reasons, was placed on medical retirement and did not count versus their allotment of scholarships. When she transferred to Texas to play, she then counted against the Horns' allotment of scholarships, even when she was granted a medical redshirt to play a sixth year.

While I agree that Sedona would have been great to have to match up against some of the posts Texas will see, especially Baylor and Miss. State, none of the others will present any problems that our quartet shouldn't be able to handle. Charlie is quite capable of giving Jatarie a break. She is not limited to the four. Also, don't forget Mide. She has continued to get better every year and showed a nice offensive game last year. Basic, yes, but effective. She can certainly provide a few minutes rest for Jatarie. Ideally, we would have more than four posts, but the four we got are pretty versatile. As long as injury and foul trouble don't come calling, I'm not too worried about our posts.

Well I have direct experience with a medical redshirt situation, and that scholarship did not count against the total. I am sorry to burst your bubble.

Agree, I think where Sedona would have made an impact the most immediately was her shot blocking/rim protection.

Absolutely, And I think people underestimate how difficult it usually is for freshmen post players their freshman year in terms getting used to the physicality and just adjusting to the game.

And although you obviously never want players to get injured, I think it would have been very difficult to get both Charlie and Sedona valuable playing time this year anyway.

You are correct - redshirts count against the total. Medical Redshirts (the 6th year to get in 4 years of eligibility) does not count. In this case her freshman year will be the redshirt year. If she wants to play one more year after her 5th year in school (third year of eligibility), the school asks for the medical exemption. If granted (the exemption to 4 in 5) that year does not count towards the scholarship limit.

The best news in this situation.
    From Texas WBB:
Texas women's basketball freshman Sedona Prince successfully underwent surgery on Monday afternoon in Austin to repair a lower right leg fracture. She sustained the injury on Friday evening competing for the United States U18 Team at the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship in Mexico City. She is expected to make a full recovery, but no timetable for her return has been established.

Statement from Texas Head Coach Karen Aston
"I am so thankful to [USA Basketball Women's National Team Director] Carol Callan, the USA Basketball staff and our training and administrative staff here at Texas for their diligence in caring for Sedona and transporting her back to Austin. We are disappointed for her but will focus on her road to recovery with faith that she returns stronger and better than ever."

I read yesterday that her surgery had been scheduled for today at St. David’s and thought it was quick as well. I think they usually wait a bit for swelling to go down before ACL surgery.
