To begin construction June 2019, finished two years later.

They better not screw this up. I don't want a monstrosity like Kyle Field where no two sides match.

Good, maybe an end to Godzillatron and that ridiculous canned music and commercials!

Amazing how the growth in the stadium and the money to fund it keeps rolling in regardless of the won-loss record.

From the pics posted here in the past few months I'm pretty sure I wont like this expansion. Only being built to add more club seats and suites if I remember correctly. Seating capacity doesnt increase much either. Im sure it will be a big money generator, but I have a feeling it will make the stadium look really strange.

I believe godzillatron gets reduced to minizilla so thats a bonus.

If this is the plan, I'd rather they take the $175 million and hand out free tacos to the students for an entire school year.
I'd rather they burn the $175 million and keep the stadium the way it is. That way they can still do it right later on. Enclose it like the north end zone or don't bother.

I think we've hit that critical point where we're never going to sell out unless we're ranked in the top 10 and playing another ranked opponent. So in all, I think this keeps capacity near where it already was and fixes the Godzillatron issues (one can hope). It gives a trendy factor to the Moncrief area, like coaches' offices overlooking the field like the good old days. Plus, you know, it's new and that's what matters to a lot of kids. That enthusiasm from the locker room changes last year was contagious, and I think this is another tool for that purpose.

I get that some people like symmetry in stadiums, but I just don't think recruits care about that. We're never going to have a need to make the SEZ look like the NEZ, as that would push capacity to about 120K and we have enough problems getting 85K butts in seats.

The concern that we wouldn't fill a larger stadium is fair. But if that's the case, why spend $175 million on what amounts to a paint job? Might as well leave it the way it is, save some money, and stay open to the possibility of expanding later, in case we eventually have demand for a larger stadium.

That said, I'd go to a lot more games if tickets cost $50 or less. I can't afford more than one game every few years. The demand is there, it's simply getting priced out.

Some people say cheap tickets are embarrassing, but they're not as embarrassing as empty seats. I'll take a 120,000 capacity stadium full of people that paid $50 rather than a half-empty "sold out" stadium where the tickets cost ten times more.

I get the idea recruits would like the idea of playing in the largest stadium in the country. And that they'd like the noise level created by a fully-enclosed stadium. The big screen might be cool for a while, but then someone will buy a bigger one and no one will care.

This. I have kids in college and so have many better things than $100+ football tickets to spend my money on. But if they were $50 to $60, I'd be in the market far more often.

OU added money generators in their SEZ. It looks incredible, both the interior, and the exterior. The exterior is the most impressive in that it has the architectrial integrity of the Library, Union and other buildings of the era, are mirrored in the new exterior.

No one wants to say good things about OU less than I do, but what they did is impressive, and they are bringing in much needed cash.

    Just my 2 cents.

Also, they enclosed it and added a bunch of stands. What a novel idea.

I can't imagine sitting right under the godzillatron, it's loud enough hearing it from the 10 or 20 yard lines...

But amazingly cannot be heard in the Centennial Club (??? West side club) , which pops you for $20,000 to listen to Craig Way on delay.

Actually when they finish "Phase II" of the SEZ, they will end up with a net loss of about 250 seats. But will have more open boxes etc.

It would be nice if they would add the six flags of Texas back to the south endzone.

The little piss-ant flags there now are an embarrassment. Lose them to at least increase the size of the American and Texas flags. The original flags that were added with the Steinmark Scoreboard were incredible. Over the years I took any number of "first timers" to Memorial Stadium, and to a person they ALL commented on the six flags.

I would love the flags back, and additionally that would mean the self-serving, sneaky midget would be gone as well.

Here’s a larger version of the rendering. The Longhorn tunnel is interesting.

I got the impression from an SA Express-News article I read that they had a general concept of what they wanted to do, but nothing was finalized. When Fenves pitched it to the board, one of the board members "half-jokingly" asked if the capacity after the renovations would exceed that of the aggy's stadium. Fenves said that wasn't the goal. The main thrust was was to provide better facilities for the athletes, etc. But, he kind of left additional capacity open when he said "maybe we could do something about that".

That artist rendering doesn't really create a bowl. If one of the goals is to create a "better game day atmosphere", that doesn't do it for me.

While I admit I have zero influence over anything about this expansion I am not a fan of this renovation without increasing capacity. When I was younger I got into the Tennessee vs Michigan capacity war and I know that would be a huge draw for future recruits. If the money will be spent we might as well go ahead and increase capacity. I recall several years ago there was a concept to close the SEZ to look just like the NEZ and East side which would bring capacity to somewhere around 122,000. I think we could do a hybrid of the old with the new and get us around 112,000-115,000 while doing away with that God awful giant video screen. That would be awesome.

    The issues are:
    • How to squeeze more money out of the stadium without spending more than you will ever recover. The stadium is hemmed in by Moncrief-Neuhauscriff on the south; San Jacinto (and the Texas-Ex's and creek) on the west; Dodds on the North; and Dedman (and the Myers Complex on the east).
    • Someone believes there is a greater demand for suites than seats, and suites make more money than seats anyway. However, the NEZ already has suites; the east and west stands cannot support suites architecturally and there is no room to build a cantilevered support system on either side without very expensive relocation of the Myers Complex on the east side and finding a new home and paying for the movement of the Texas-Ex's.
The tunnel is goofy and would never look like the picture so lose that add a few more seats and get on with it. There is no reason to pick a fight with aggy to see whose is the biggest. It is what happens on the field that counts.

Exactly. And what’s the hurry anyway?

Give Herman 2-3 years and if the Horns are back among the elite and competing for *championships then we can play the who-has-more-seating game and the funds will be flowing.

    * When I first typed this I misspelled it as championsips but upon further review I kind of like the word championsips.

If our administration could pull it off, they would tear down the stadium and just build suites on all sides of the field in a heartbeat. They could care less about filling up the stadium or regular season ticketholders which has caused so many season ticketholders to drop... and I am not even sure winning will cure that problem.

CDC's survey got a huge dose of hatred for the jumbotron, its cheesy commercials, and obnoxious noise. So Fenves' answer is a larger, louder, more obnoxious scoreboard. Why not just complete the bowl, put a roof on it, and steal the jumbotron from Jerry World, then hang it down the middle so it blocks the view of everyone above row 25.
