    Anyone see the first debate?

I was streaming it until I lost the feed at about the :35 point.

To that point, Cruz was OK ... wasn't as good as I expected, but ORourke's incessant redirect to everything back to a race victimization ...

    Pitiful.

O'Rourke did better than I expected but still gave very shallow responses almost always relating to identity politics. Cruz nailed him pretty good on taxes and gun control. Rourke looked visibly shook when the crowd started laughing when he claimed to support the 2nd amendment.

I chuckled when Cruz took a shot at Beto during the conciliatory question regarding something you admire about your opponent. He replied that he admires Beto's honesty about being a big government socialist who loves to raise taxes. LMAO! Cruz just can't help himself.

I listened to a portion of it played on the Michael Berry radio show. Berry interjected the comment "O'Rourke sure did a good job of writing the questions for these reporters" when the clown reporter asked Cruz about supporting Trump after the acrimony of the primaries. Of course the clown didn't ask it that way, which prompted Berry's comment.

    Just finished.

Cruz dominated on law and order and police issues. O'Rourke was absurdly anti-cop and unapologetically played identity politics every chance he got. Cruz also clobbered him on judicial issues and the Second Amendment. Beto's "thoughts and prayers" comment was idiotic. That might play in San Francisco. This is Texas. One of the dumbest comments I've heard in a debate.

I don't think the Trump question was unfair. Hell, who among us hasn't wondered the same thing? It was a legitimate point to raise, and I think Cruz handled it as well as it could have been handled.

Beto handled the DWI well but sounded like a sanctimonious tool bringing identity politics into it. He also handled the Obamacare question as well as one could. He had a strong point on Cruz's missed votes while he was running for president. However, Cruz had a good defense on Beto's charge that Texans don't know where he was. (It's a superficial issue, but it matters to stupid people.)

Both gave good answers when asked for something positive about the other. Both gave good closing remarks, though I think stepping down from the podiums was dorky and awkward.

did you hear ORourks under breath comment ... "true to form"

That's right ... he is speaking the truth ... you're a socialist who wants to raise taxes.

Will the voters recognize that? Not enough of 'em ... Cruz needs to educate as much as campaign.

Cruz ended with some true snark about Socialism. Don't know that it was necessary but I know it's true.
The question is, what did voters need to hear from Cruz there? Did they need to hear that O'Rourke was a Socialist? Or did they need to see Cruz be magnanimous? I don't claim to know. I hope Cruz made the right decision.

O'Rourke is an anarchist. What else can you say? He has no real solutions; only sympathy for the disenfranchised which is laudable but incomplete when it comes to the role of a Senator which includes ratifying treaties and declaring war. There is a big picture which the new me generation doesn't care about. They only want their share of what they assume was stolen from them regardless of the consequences of their own actions.

To be fair, he did say some nice things about O'Rourke's family and his work ethic before getting into what a true believer he is in socialism. However, nobody is going to remember that. I wouldn't have done it. He could have made the point without the snarkiness.

Had to give Cruz props for not going low when the DWI issue was served up in a silver shot glass.

Have seen a LOT of social media slamming Cruz for the constant Hillary mentions but they overlook that what Beta wants to bring IS the HRC platform. As such, it IS relevant.

Another constant in the post-debate social media has been how blatant the left is at essentially admitting that due process does not matter and that the officers are not entitled to Constitutional protections. They all are admitting that they want to re-write the Constitution.

In their defense ... they were taught well. The Boomers started this national debt deal in earnest and it’s been accelerating RAPIDLY.
Sadly .. they don’t understand that continuing these big Govt policies will NOT get them what they want nor will it help the big picture.

I suppose I’m simply more motivated to keep clear what she is and that’s why I liked Cruz’ closing in the debate.
Illustrating What he is/represents is FAR more important than participating in some scripted Barney statement.

He was right to drive home the point. He was wrong to do it in a douchey way when the circumstances warranted magnanimity, especially when unlikeability is his biggest liability.

That style is voted over substance is why we are in this problem.

If the two were aligned on philosophy and issues then I would agree. I’m not voting on my pastor or who is most likely to succeed.
Policy ... record of actively pursuing correct policy ... first foremost and always.

Maybe so, but no candidate has ever won without having some voters who chose him for superficial reasons. That's just how life is.

Again, this has nothing to do with policy. He could have made the same point without being a douche. It's the douchiness I object to, not his point.

he had to do it in a douchey way because that is his way.

I have no use for O'Rourke because of immigration but Cruz is a lip sore of a human being. Cuddling up to Trump after the slanderous attacks on him and his family is the definition of a grovelling office seeker.

I can't vote none of the above unfortunately.

I like the douchiness, just as I like Trump's douchiness. It makes me cringe at times, but both men are willing to say stuff that needs to be said, and say it plainly, even harshly.

    That's quite refreshing.

The race is close at all because people don't like Cruz's personality. If he was a little more likable publicly his reelection would be secure.
There are better ways to humiliate O'Rourke. Hold his feet to the fire on issues in the debate even be a bit of an a-hole. But don't make yourself look bad at the end like he did. If he loses, it will be because of things like that.

You may like his douchiness, but if he loses, it's not going to be because folks like you (or me) didn't vote for him. It'll be because he took the douchiness far enough to turn off people who prefer a "nice guy."

And so we return to the fact we have an incredibly weak electorate and none of this really matters until people take responsibility for themselves.

My late father was saying during the POTUS primaries Cruz néeded to go all sugar and promise to provide all sorts of goodies ... then he’d win ... even the GOP nomination ...

get elected ... then go hard core originalist ... closing most of the alphabet soup agencies, etc, before his one/only term expired, because we’d probably not see the improvement of losing Uncle Sam in <4 years.

So ... we have to look in the mirror for our problems, ultimately.

    GIVE US A KING!

We do have a weak electorate (and always have. That doesn't mean none of this matters.

Always? Is this exclusive of the first 125 years/so? I’d say the typical voter in 1876 was a bit more resilient and grounded than the voter of 2018 even if he wasn’t as “educated.” In fact, it seems the more education we get, the loonier we become overall.

I’m not saying “it doesn’t matter” ... but the degree of relevance should PALE in comparison to proper thinking .. but it doesn’t, and that’s a travesty. it’s Also the result of the electorate’s failure to self-govern.

Some Brownshirts chased Tex Cruz and family out of a DC restaurant tonight.
How long before they are doing more than just shouting?
Will Beto condemn the actions of his people?

Joe Fan, this is an example of somewhere that O'Keefes videos could help with. When things like this occur, there should be an IT search of government computers to see who was searching and communicating about the movement of politicians. Then all those involved should be fired immediately. There has to be some consequences for participating in the mob, other than pats on the back at the DSA meeting and the occasional hundred dollar handshake from Soros' cronies.

Are Cruz and others serious about fighting back? If not, they lose and we all with them.
