Kysre Gondrezick - Transferred from Michigan to WVU after her freshman year and sat out last season. Prolific scoring guard who led all Big 10 freshmen in points per game (14.9), All-Big Ten 2nd Team, Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Saw an interview the other day that she’ll be playing the point for WVU.

Hey Kurupt I did attend the scrimmage and the Potluck dinner!
Let me preface my thoughts on the scrimmage by saying the girls played against a boys team. The guys were bigger, faster and much more athletic than the ladies. And they didn't hold anything back. As a result I don't think we got to see a fair assessment of how good the team can be. But that said, the players I thought stood out were: Danni Williams, Lashann, Jatari, Sug and Audrey Warren. I was not very high on Danni Williams until I saw her play and all I could say is wow! She is Basketball savvy, has a great shot, and I would't be surprised if she doesn't end up being the Senior leader of the team. Lashann did her slicing & dicing thru the defense but it was tough to get her shot up against the boys. Jatari looked really strong with her shot but it was almost impossible to get many rebounds against these guys. Sug is clearly the floor leader. Audrey really impressed me with her toughness. She is going to be a contributor before the year is over. The bad news is Joyner was wearing a boot and I heard she would probably not be back playing with the team until Thanksgiving. They are hoping she will be able to play in the Florida tournament. Olamide was also nicked up and did not participate. Only 10 players participated in the scrimmage. Joyner, Olamide, Sedonna, and Shae all watched from the sideline. The other Freshmen, Charlie and Joanne, looked like Freshmen. A little confused and overwhelmed. Chastity and Destiny looked solid. Destiny showed flashes with 2 great drive, dribble and swoosh shots in the fourth quarter. They both looked seasoned as Sophomores but seem to rush things a little. Coach Aston commented that the scrimmage was 2 to 3 weeks earlier than most years so the group was not near where they will be closer to the season beginning and they were not in game shape yet. This was evident in the second half of the game.
The Pot Luck dinner was Great! I love all the different dishes people bring. We had about 60-70 people there. Wish we could have had more. These girls sure deserve it. We are going to have another really fun year watching these girls play.

Thank you. That’s really disappointing about Joyner and her being in the boot. Hopefully it doesn’t effect her conditioning and she’ll be ready to play when she’s 100 percent.

Possible silver lining? More minutes for Charli against teams we can afford for her to get up to speed against.

Trying to figure out who cast that second vote for Texas. Kinda surprised Mulkey would vote for Texas even if they deserved it.

    At the scrimmage:
Got there a bit early. First time I had a chance to see the players in action. That first half was really good. Shots were falling, Horns were running, rotations were working well. Immediate good impressions from LaShanna, Danni, Jada and Audrey. Looks like Jada and Audrey will be interchangeable at the four and three (at least they were during the scrimmager, even playing together at times). Both tough players, solid rebounding form, good shooters and passers. Both very high effort players. LaShanna might be quicker than last season. Her ballhandling allowed her to penetrate and she was excellent in finishing at the rim—some straightforward layups, some “ooohh!” moves. Showed a good stroke from outside. Danni has a smooth stroke form BTA. Her passing was also pretty good. Easy to tell that she has a lot of good experience behind her.

I liked that all of our returners looked comfortable on both ends, especially in the first half when the Horns outplayed the practice team.

Still bothered that our posts are having trouble making layups. The shots are too low on the box, hitting the rim rather than rolling into the basket. This has been an issue for several years now. They have to put that shot up higher on the box to give the ball a chance to go in. On the positive side, our frosh are going to help up the FT %.

Texas is going to run whenever possible. When in the halfcourt, it looks like the posts will be quite involved. Lots of penetration by our guards. Defensively, it’s still a work in progress as far as rotation, help, etc.

Charli showed some good things. She badly rushed her first shot but seemed to settle down afterwards. Audrey was a surprise. I had expected her to be good, just not as dynamic as she was. She seemed comfortable playing the four as well as the three. She didn’t seem to have much trouble with the schemes. Due to the loss of Sedona, Charli may get more playing time but I think Audrey will be right there. Joanne is quick and fast. She is also not as slender as I had expected. All the frosh look to be in great shape. I was glad to see Shae there even though she was held out of the scrimmage. Probably still recovering from that incident at the first day of practice.

The second half had the practice guys take over. Shots pretty much stopped falling for the Horns for about one and a half quarters. Hard to keep up when you can’t score. Offense was still getting players open looks, just shots were not going in.

Considering the team had been together for about a week of practice as a full squad, it was a good showing. At the dinner, Coach Aston said that the team would scrimmage Arizona in a week or so. My hearing is not the best, especially when microphones and distance are involved.

I liked what I saw of the team. The offense is not going to change drastically with the departure of Ariel and Brooke. Sug will keep the team running full speed at every opportunity. Chasity will continue that when she gives Sug a break. That means rebounding to initiate the fastbreak. Our posts will get plenty of looks in the half court game.

Based on this scrimmage, LaShanna and Danni will be the primary 3pt shooters with capable backup from Sug, Chasity, Destiny, Jada and Audrey. All of our guards are capable of making the three. I hope to see Sug join LaShanna and Danni in becoming 3pt threats in the starting lineup with Destiny and Chasity providing that from the bench. We are thin at the post, one reason that Jada and Audrey may end up at the four at times with the other being when Coach Aston wants to go with a small lineup.

    At the dinner:
Brooke made the wall! Disappointed that Ariel didn’t. Looking forward to seeing LaShanna up there after this season.

Nice talk with Audrey who sat at our table. She enjoys the whole basketball routine. I told her she impressed with her effort and play in the scrimmage. Her effort and work reminded me of Brady Sanders. Asked about playing the PF spot during the scrimmage, she expects to play there some at times during the season. I noticed she displayed excellent form in boxing out and got fouled several times when players went over the back. Won’t surprise me if she ends up as the frosh with the most minutes played. Audrey’s major is currently Education with plans to teach at the middle school level.

Also spoke with Jada since her listed major is the same as the one I got my degree in. I wanted to find out which track she was on: deaf education, audiology or speech therapy. She had been on speech therapy but has changed her major to psychology with a focus on child psychology, iirc.

Not sure why you would say that "due to the loss of Sedona"...Charli would get more playing time. How would you know that is why? You all say some of the most intriguing things. I have seen these kids play a "LOT", over the years. Who told you that is how Charli would get minutes. Clearly, both girls are not putting in weeks of work for you to make this observation, due to an injury. Yes....Im reading your biases everyday.... and for some of you, Hornfans....You are very critical of this team. Be more positive "HORNFANS".

No one is looking for your credit....but surely its not always accurate.

I really like this team talent wise they are in there too 5 in the country but one thing I think that they can work on is heart that want to. I was at the scrimmage and when it got late they did slow down and that is when that heart kicks in because where going to go against some teams that got heart like Mississippi state for example there where so many teams that had more talent then them but they hadn’t that drive and want to that what we need Ariel was a prime example of that last season each player get that that will of not backing down fight to the finish get nasty with this is going to the final if they get that and will have them bears shacking in the boots and teams that I think we play that have heart are Mississippi sate ,Baylor ,West Virginia

I read that very differently. My interpretation of what Babhorn wrote was that Charli is going to be relied on to log more minutes at center. Charli is supremely talented and is going to get her minutes regardless but with Sedona out, she’ll probably be called on to play more minutes to spell Jatarie than many of us initially speculated. Not passing judgment on her ability, just a matter of available players.

Regarding 3 point shooting Sug shot a decent percentage last year so IMO Lashann’s ability to make perimeter jump shots consistently will be key. Not only for the team by having good spacing but also individually because of how great she is at getting into the lane.

I would also like to know if Coach Aston changed defenses at times during the scrimmage? Or whether there was anything different schematically from Coach Aston on offense or defense. We all want the players to improve and be better but Coach Aston also needs to improve and be better as a Coach.

I agree to an extent, but I also think that Coaching plays a roll in it as well. Like I said in my other post, I really hope that Coach Aston has improved in terms of her in game Coaching.

I'm not worried about their "heart". The returners didn't look gassed. But, that's jmo. What I did notice the difficulty getting shots to go that went in the first two quarters. But the fight was there through out.

I didn't pay any real attention to offensive or defensive schemes this time. I just wanted to see the players in a game like situation since this was the first time I had seen them on the court.

Gonna keep an eye on Jada and Audrey. I liked their tenacity and fight when they played the four and had to battle inside against taller players. Both boxed out well, especially on the defensive end.

Thank you. I also really like that Jada will be playing some 4 this year. It was one of the things that some of us talked about and were hoping for with her. She has a nice inside game to go along with her perimeter game at her size.

Disappointed for Joyner. Unfortunately just like last year she’s going to have to work her way back through the season. It looks like Jada, and Audrey are going to be even more valuable.

With the recent Joyner news added to Sedona's injury, that leaves us with 3 'bigs' available for the near future: Jatarie, Mide and Charli. I expect to see Jada banging down low quite a bit. Managing minutes vs fouls in the paint is going to be a real concern. Early season opponents with players 6' 2"+:
    Duquesne - 6' 2", 6' 2", 6' 2", 6' 2", 6' 3"
    North Texas - 6' 2", 6' 2", 6' 4"
    McNeese St. - 6' 2"
    Quinnipiac - 6' 3"
    GCS TBA
    GCS TBA
    UTSA - None
Outside of the as yet undetermined GCS opponents, Texas should be a clear favorite in all of these games up to the GCS but that doesn't mean the team should expect to show up and just win. Then it's Mississippi State (12/2) followed by Tennessee (12/9).

I know several of us disagree regarding roster size, but these injuries validate my views that you have to take advantage of the 15 allowable scholarships. Throw in transfers and other unforeseen issues, and depth at one position can take a quick and unexpected hit.

Having Rellah and Khaleann transfer reduced our depth at PF by two slots. Now, with Sedona out for the year (most likely) and Joyner out for a while, we will perhaps have to become more of a perimeter team early on; and, but that, I mean we have to have our jump shooters and other perimeter players contribute at a higher level. The sophomore class of Destiny and Chasity really have to step it up with their offensive contributions; their 3-point shooting will be needed to help make up for Joyner's production.

Here's hoping everyone else remains healthy.

Agree. And this is where Coaching also comes into play. Coach Aston is going to have to find ways to cover up the teams weaknesses and the lack of post depth as much as possible. Playing zone and using other defenses and playing small ball on offense if and when there’s foul trouble in the post.

I’m still a fan of smaller rosters. I just think there’s better continuity on offense and defense when you play and have a smaller roster.

Wish we knew more specifically what type of injury Joyner suffered other than the generic "ankle injury". That would give us fans a better idea of when she would likely be back. What type of surgery, was hardware installed, etc. all things that will impact the time line for her to return back to playing condition.

The good thing is that, unlike last season during her suspension, she will continue to be involved with team activities this time.

Although her conditioning is going to take a hit, Joyner was in excellent shape before her injury and will continue to be monitored and treated by team personnel as well as continuing to be involved with the team.

Even with her inability to run to maintain conditioning the regular way, there are other methods that can be used to help decrease the loss of conditioning.

Horrendous news about Joyner. Didn't someone say she might be back by Thanksgiving? That isn't very far away. Hopefully it was some really minor surgery. Would sure like to have her for MSU and Tenn.

I would be, too, if there were guarantees of no suspensions, injuries, etc.

Unfortunately, the play is getting more physical, and injuries are becoming much more common than 10-20 years ago based on how hard players train during the offseason with not a lot of down time for bodies to rest.
