The next time I hear someone say we’ve turned a corner after the Horns win a game, I’m going to remind them that the Horns are in a goddam round room and are just going in ******* circles.

I think there’s a difference between “turning the corner” and re-entering the upper echelon of the FBS. I do think we have turned a corner this year, but we may be two years — two good classes — away from returning to elite status. Of course, I hope it’s sooner.

We're back, we're just not all the way back.

At worst, we're on our way back. Which is an improvement.

Translation into Aggie-ese - "Wait until next year", which Aggies have been doing for 80 years.

I can wait a short time to get back to relevance, I can NOT and shall NOT wait for discipline and fundamentals.

For four years we were the very definition of mediocre. This year we are clearly better than mediocre. We will see just how much better during the month of November.

Just 2 weeks ago Texas was being suggested as just outside of the 4 team CFP gang.

Well, lost a couple, but this team could, I know COULD win out and still land in a good bowl not sponsored by a lawn implement or personal hygiene product.

Maybe not yet turning the corner, but not already stuck in a ditch with 3 regular season games to go.

I like BIS saying we are coming. This culture and team is definitely better than the Strong era, even with a remaining contingent of Strong’s players.

If this team can win out, watch out. If we get to the Big 12 Championship, also a great year. If we play OU, that could get ugly. If we play WVU, that’s a win and a plus.

Through the first six games, I might could have agreed with you. The past two games and one abomination of a fourth quarter...uh...not just no, but hell no. It has been WORSE than mediocre.

    I don't see any clarity.
We have one win I feel good about and that was OU.
The rest we scratched out wins over bad teams.
Ok, we beat a bad USC the way we should have.

I think the remainder of the season will tell whether we are still mediocre or not.
    I'm not convinced yet.

OK, your level of approval is one step below mine. I'm saying the rest of the season determines how far above mediocrity we have risen, and you're saying it will determine if we have risen at all. Fair enough. If we lose out (except KU) I might have to join you in your assessment.

USC and TCU turned out to not be what we thought they were. We thought that was the meat of our schedule. Besides the win over ou, it might be WVU, TTech, and IState is the meat. Let's see what we look like after those games

We 1 year into a bad *** recruiting class, about to complete part 2. We are in every freakin game, even with a crap load of injuries and zero depth. 3 years ago, we sucked in a bad way. We are absolutely good and will soon be competing at a higher level. Too many people on this board think they know how to rebuild a team.

You start with fundamentals and discipline for those left you, as well as those coming in; THEN you coach up what you have.

We only have two things missing from this equation.

Perfectly stated and your spot on. As you look at teams in both sports, business, or any realm for that matter, fundamentals and discipline is in order when rebuilding is required. That said, changing a culture and building a winning program takes time. Something today’s society seems to be unwilling to allow. What was Alabama’s record under Nick after year 2??? First time poster, so don’t trash me too bad.

we have lots of ultimatum type threads. lol

it's hard to live in "the in between." no one likes the tension. But it is what it is. For me, I see 3 places for where we could be...

    * Top Tier - Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, Mr 10-win Mack (5% of teams)
    * Big cluster with no real sense of how to turn the ship around. Full of excuses and "wait until next year" mumbo jumbo. (75% of teams)
    * Somewhere in between. Top 25 team who may or may not be getting their stuff together. Glimpses of hope and feelings of utter frustration. (20% of teams)

I think we were never "somewhere in between" with Charlie. I think that's where we are with Herman.

But, I also think that the arrow is pointing up. I don't know if we'll make it back to the Top Tier with him. But I think we're going to be Top 15. That's where my confidence meter is.

I know we want to be back, but we weren't killing it recruiting (and keeping the better players) the last few years, plus bolting early for the NFL $ didn't help either. Herman's building a good foundation. We went from losing seasons to winning seasons, now we need to go to the next level next year, etc. I really dispute whether anyone could've just walked in last year and kicked it in the ***.....or this year, etc...

Jr's leaving killed this D. That and all the D lineman we lost from that errbody class. Now 4 of 5 are gone. We have no depth and when you lose 4 Jrs to the draft it's just a killer. We lost 2 games on essentially the last play of the game. Pisses me off because it shouldn't have happened. But fundamentally doesn't change that this still has a chance at a good year. We need to take the gift of Bowman being out and find a win in Lubbock. Then win at home and hope like hell WVU beats OU. That one is a toss up and probably comes down to the last team with the ball.

    Weren't killing it recruiting?
2015: Texas' 2015 recruiting class was ranked 9th, 12th, 7th, and 10th by ESPN, Rivals.com, Scout.com, and 247Sports.com, respectively. These rankings also placed Texas as having the best recruiting class in the Big 12 Conference.
2016: Texas Longhorns recruiting class finishes No. 11 nationally, 1st in Big 12

Recruiting wasn't the problem. Also, we haven't made the "winning seasons" yet. I know no one here expects us to lose out (Kansas) but no one here expected Charlie to lose to Kansas. So lets not count those chickens yet.

With all due respect to all, recruiting so called 4 and 5 stars I agree is important, but players Charlie selected for his philosophy, is not the same for Herman. Simply saying, let’s all give this coaching staff an opportunity to succeed and not be such a “my **** don’t stink” fan base thinking that the rebuilding process is different because we’re Texas. No more Country Club mentality folks. We are headed in a good direction. One that is built on high ethics and stability. Let’s just enjoy the ride.

    "Lighten up, Francis".

We've lost 3 games by a total of 9 points. We were in all three of those games until the very end, and could have (probably should have) won them. Not a single blow-out loss, which is also a big step up from recent years. True, we lost to Maryland at Maryland (D.C. is still a home game for the Terps), and we lost our last 2. But the last two games were in Stillwater (never an easy place to win), and by a top ten team on a last second 2-point conversion. I'm not ignoring the abhorrent play of our defense that desperately needs to get corrected and was the prime culprit in all of our loses and the few close wins (Tulsa, Baylor, OU). But, all things considered thus far, this team is MUCH improved from recent years and the trajectory is still upward. We are definitely on our way in the right direction....... hopefully I didn't just jinx the rest of the season.

Thank you. This team shows the culture change that Tom and the other coaches have been trying to instill. They play hard nosed football and they do not give up. Weakness at some postions, poor execution of fundamentals and mental mistakes are hurting the team. But I applaud what progress we have seen by the players and coaches and as pointed out above, they are in every game to the end.

Although I do not expect it, if W V can beat OU I would not be surprised to see the Horns win the conference. And if they do not, but they continue to fight in all of their games, with good recruiting they WILL turn the corner.

    No moral victories here.
    Ws are what count.
Can still have a successful season.
And with a little help even play for a CC.
At this point we could still end up 6-7, 7-6.
    Depending on the bowl game.
I don't expect that but will form my opinion of this team at the end of the season.
Hope I am a happy camper then. ;)

All this controversy about "turning the corner", I don't think there's any question we have "turned the corner". Having turned the corner, my question is whether or not that corner is at Talladega Motor Speedway.

    Bama was 11-2 in 2008.

CS recruited well, then lost 60% of the recruits within 2 years. TH had a major rebuild when he arrived here.

Since this was in reply to my post, I'm assuming you're directing your comments to me so let me reply:
I never said that Charlies recruits matched Herman's scheme. just disagreeing w/ the other post that said we "weren't killing it in recruiting" - I 'll hold the #10 and #11. both #1 in the Big 12, should qualify as "killing it" at the time. I remember lots of people being excited by "errbody".

Don't know where you got that from my post. i was just pointing out the fact we weren't @ "winning seasons" (pl) YET. We still need one more. As I said, EVERYONE on this board EXPECTS us to get there but we're not there yet. What part of my post gave you the impression I was being critical of TH or being impatient w/ the rebuilding process?

Sorry if this is being too pedantic, but my career's based on the present state, not what is expected. The regulatory agencies I have to deal with don't give a **** what we expect to obtain in test results, only what we have NOW. So my view in life tends to be what we hope and plan for, what risk are in the future, and what is factual now.
