The Duquesne Dukes will take a two game tour through Texas to start off the season. They will play TCU on Nov. 06 before heading to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. That Nov. 08 game will be the Dukes’ second of the season while it will be the season opener for the Longhorns. UPDATE: Duquesne lost to TCU on Nov. 06 61-48.

While Texas and Duquesne have not played each other prior to this season, Coach Aston has a 3-2 record vs the Dukes while head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte. While NC-Charlotte won the first three meetings, the Dukes took the last two. This will be the Dukes’ first trip to the state of Texas and they have make it a Texas Two Step, playing TCU on Tuesday, Nov. 06 and Texas on Thursday, Nov. 08.

Texas is ranked 11th in the preseason AP poll and 8th in the USA Today Coaches preseason poll. Duquesne received votes in both polls. Duquesne has been picked to win the Atlantic 10 by the coaches in their preseason poll.

To show just how much the Dukes shot the trey last season, Brooke took 166 3s while Ariel had 119 attempts from BTA last season. Duquesne’s Omogross had 221 attempts from BTA while teammate Vojinovic had 202. They both, along with teammate Lass, all hit over 41.5% from BTA. I don’t foresee their reliance on the three changing this season with those three players coming back. Guess what that means on Defense for the Horns? The need to guard the 3pt line will be paramount.

    DUQUESNE DUKES (0-1)
The Dukes return all five starters from last year’s second place A10 finishers. Three have been named to the All A10 preseason teams while a fourth is on the A10 preseason All Defensive team. They return their top five scorers and rebounders from a team that fell in the third round of the 2018 post season WNIT.

Chassidy Omogrosso (#2, 5-4 Sr. G), Paige Cannon (#10, 6-1 RS Jr. G/F), Julijana Vojinovic (#13, 5-10 Sr. G), Conor Richardson (#22, 5-10 Sr. G) and Kadri-Ann Lass (#42, 6-3 Sr. G/F) all started at least 30 games last season for the Dukes. Omogrosso (17.3 ppg), Vojinovid (15.3 ppg), Lass (10.9 ppg), Richardson (7.7 ppg) and Cannon (5.7 ppg) were the top five scorers for Duquesne. Eniko Kuttor (#14, 6-2 RS Jr. F; 6.6 rpg), Lass (6.5 rpg), Cannon (5.6 rpg) and Vojinovic (4.7 rpg) were the top five rebounders. Omogrosso (92-221; 41.6%), Vojinovic (84-202; 41.6%) and Lass (27-65; 41.5%) return as the top three 3pt shooters from last season. The three players that took half their FTs last season and made at least 82.4% are back: Omogrosso (93-112; 83.0%), Vojinovic (89-108; 82.4%) and Libby Bazelak (#21, 5-9 Soph. G; 48-53; 90.6%).

Eight of the nine players that averaged double digit minutes return. This will be a team with experienced starters and bench players. Besides Kuttor and Bazelak, Amanda Kalin (#35, 5-8 Soph. G) also averaged double digit minutes. A key experienced player returning from a redshirt year is Angela Staffileno (#54, 6-2 RS Jr. F) who played in 60 games her first two years.

    TEXAS LONGHORNS (0-0)

With Joyner Holmes out indefinitely with an ankle injury, Texas has two starters back in post Jatarie White and guard LaShann Higgs. While Texas could go small, I am guessing that frosh Charli Collier will join Sug Sutton and Danni Williams in the starting lineup. Charli looked very good in the one exhibition we saw her in.

Horns will have six players listed as guards and three others listed as G/Fs to start the season. Destiny Littleton (G), Chasity Patterson (G) and Jada Underwood (G/F) will provide experience off the bench while Joanne Allen-Taylor (G), Audrey Warren (G/F) and Shae Routt (G/F) are also available to provide depth in the backcourt. Olamide Aborowa (F) is the main player that will be available to provide relief in the frontcourt. Jada, Audrey and Shae could also see action in the frontcourt when the Horns go small.

Out for certain for at least this game are Joyner (post ankle surgery) and Sedona (broken leg). Shae might also be limited due to earlier health problems.

    LINEUPS

While no specific lineup has been set this early in the season, Charli’s performance in the exhibition game could move her into the starting lineup. That would leave Mide as the only backup 4/5 over 6 feet. Duquesne’s starting lineup is based on the previous game vs TCU. Surprisingly, Libby Bazelak replaced returning starter Julijana Vojinovic in the starting lineup.
    Screenshot (9).png

The Dukes were unable to handle TCU’s inside pair of A. Okonkwo and J. Moore who combined for 17 of 23 FGs and 17 rebs. TCU made 25 of 53 FGs and grabbed 43 rebs.

I don’t see Duquesne being able to handle Charli and Jatarie inside. Horns are going to have to be diligent about defending the 3pt line. Of the Dukes 56 FG attempts, 22 came from BTA (39%).

    STATS COMPARISON
There are no stats for Texas as this is the first game for the Horns.

Good opportunity for Texas to work on guarding against the three - something they need to do better this year, imo. I also look forward to seeing how the rotations change or do not change from the exhibition game.

The Dukes have a solid team. A couple of tall girls in the post etc. But they are somewhat slow. TCU should have beat them by more than 13 on their own court. After watching them I'd say TX should win by at least 25. Just my opinion.

BH thx for the review. I love them! When I see you starting a new thread about the next game, I get all excited inside.

If it rains in dfw 2nite I'll be posted in front of the TV watching our Longhorns. However, if its just cold I'll be in the stands watching the cedar hill Longhorns play Desoto. High school football. Gotta love it!

I'm sure they'll replay the games on LHN later tonight.

I thought the team played okay. But they’re going to have to play much better on the road to beat North Texas. Decision making/shot selection has to improve. Rebounding the ball is also an area that they need to improve on. Lashann, Destiny, and Sug played well although Sug’s decision making could be a little better and hopefully her jump shot we’ll start falling.

Danni struggled shooting the ball and because of that I would have liked to have seen her not settle for jump shots and take the ball to the basket. Charlie did some nice things but has to be smarter and not pickup cheap fouls. I don’t know the reason for Chaz not getting a lot of playing time but I felt she should have played more because she did some really nice things on offense and defensively. They were decent but really need to improve.

Pretty impressive win, imo. Almost doubled up a pretty good Duquesne team, 78-41, with the bench playing a lot of minutes in the last two quarters.

None of the starters got more than 28 minutes (Sug & Danni). LaShann did all her damage in 23 minutes, a game high 20 pts, 4 rebs, 4 assists and 2 steals. Jatarie had a double double with ten pts and 10 rebs. Destiny joined LaShann and Jatarie in double figures with 15 pts on 3-6 from BTA. Mide had a nice 15 minute appearance, grabbing 8 rebs and scoring 6 pts. Sug ended up with 9 assists. Joanne missed her only shot and was the only one that did not score. Charli fouled out after playing 16 minutes, scoring six pts and grabbing two rebs. Shae was the only player not to get in. Per an earlier release, she was available to play.

Horns didn't shoot well from the FT line, only 50% but they only took 6 FTs. That and the 30% from BTA were the only things that could be considered negative. And I don't expect Danni to go 1-8 from BTA very often. Four players hit treys.

Overall, good defense. I thought I saw a zone for a minute or two but will have to watch the replay to verify that. Lots of switching on the man to man on the perimeter. Horns held three Duquesne starters to zero pts. That's three of their top four scorers. Mide and Jatarie rebounded with authority.

Next up is N. Tx on Monday at 7 PM. Game will be at Denton.

kurupt, it was the first game. Yep, there are areas they need to improve on and I expect they will.

Danni, like Destiny, is a 3pt shooter. You are not going to see them driving and penetrating much.

I don't think it is as I have not found it anywhere but I am hoping that N. Tx will have it online, even it is through a pay site.

Destiny’s response when Nell Fortner asked her if she got a lot of outside people in her ear to stay at Texas after a tough freshman year:

“To be honest with you, I didn’t. I got many calls, you know, to come here, come there, but that’s when I really asked myself, ‘What do I want?’ Do I want to take the easy way out and leave or do I want to stay here and trust the process? I stayed here and trust the process. We have a long way to go, I have a long way to go but my teammates have been there for me.”

Yes, she is a 3pt shooter but I still feel that there were times that she forced things and in order to get her shot going should have taken the ball to the rim and made a layup or get fouled so she could see the ball go through the net. Or get to the offensive glass and get an easy put back.

I agree with @kurupt that Chaz needs more minutes. She only got 9 minutes but was extremely efficient on offense and defense. She scored 6 points, had 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. It's good to see both Chaz and Destiny gaining confidence and getting more comfortable on the floor.

LaShann was the best player on the floor. She could have had more points but passed up a few shots to get the ball to other players. At times, it looked like she slowed her game down just so other players (from both teams) could keep up with her. Without Brooke and Ariel we don't look as fast as last year but that may be a positive as we will be more under-control and have fewer turnovers.

It's just the first game but we need more offensive production from Sug, Danni and Jatarie. I'm certain there will be improvement over the next 2-3 games as they settle into game mode.

Sug ends the night with 11-12 assists if Danni shoots the way she’s capable of but I’ll take a 4.5 assist/turnover ratio and be very happy with her play. The pass that sailed wide right to Destiny in the corner and the pass to Jatarie in a crowd that resulted in a scrum/jump ball were the only 2 glaring mistakes that come to mind.

Apparently, the 2018-2019 version of the UT fastbreak is launching the ball down the court with no person there to receive it and hoping/praying that our player can outrace the other team's player to the ball first. Happened a couple of times tonight, and we scored!

I thought the ladies played great. Wonderful effort on defense. 12 points in a half is wonderful against anybody. I liked the switching on the perimeter......seemed like a lot more than usual. Even when fighting through the screens, they hedged good then handed the player back and recovered back to their player. Just good defense. The offense will come. I’ll be in Denton Monday night to see how they do against North Texas. I don’t expect it to be real competitive....perhaps a 20-25 win.....if they put out the defensive effort like tonight.

I think we also have to remember that Sug is a different PG than Brooke. Sug Is a little bit more of a pass first traditional PG than Brooke.

I think this years team will score more in transition with the long outlet pass as opposed to Brooke igniting the fast brake using her speed and dribbling.

I dunno. U.T.'s success under Aston has spoiled me. Good isn't enough anymore. Thirty point victories don't fully satisfy. If we don't look like a national championship team, I'm a little disappointed. We didn't look like one tonight, though there are a lot of promising, interesting players. If she keeps playing like this, a transformed Destiny Littleton could be a star by the end of the season. She hit the three and drove the basket; and that's what you need to win championships. One sets up the opportunity to do the other. Aston has to figure out a way to open up more opportunities for Collier, who is going to be something else if she learns to avoid silly freshman fouls. Williams didn't impress tonight (bad shooting); but if she ever hits from outside, that would spread out those dense zones people play against us and give Collier more room. We are going to get sick of those zones until we show we can handle them. I agree with those who want more minutes for Patterson. She's shot the ball well in her limited appearances so far. Let's see what she can do, or can't do. I really like Warren. She seems like a smart, solid all around player who will contribute at a high level in a lot of ways as she matures. Texas is still a bit of a muddle on offense. I kind of feel we should have been able to score in the nineties against Duquesne, we so overmatched them athletically; but yes, its the first game of the season.

So, I have to ask. In which games last season did we look like a national championship team? Other than against UConn, my memory doesn't quickly recall any others.

I am also a bit surprised on some things regarding Patterson. She definitely entered the game after freshmen, Joanne Allen-Taylor. Don't recall if she was the last player off the bench, or if that was Audrey.

I thought Sug did a great job. Having 9 assists in the first game of the season is nothing to sneeze at. Can't say any player matched that number often (if at all) in Coach A's time at Texas.

I thought Patterson would be the one to come in and run the point when Sug was on the bench. But, if Sug played 28 minutes, and Chasity played 9 minutes, who ran the point those other minutes? There were times when both Chasity and Sug were on the floor together, so not even sure Chasity ran the point all that often. Will have to go back and re-watch.

Glad to see Lashann start out so well out of the gate. When she gets her offense going early in the game, that typically indicates she will have a very good point total.

Won't surprise me if Shae redshirts.

Audrey got in before Chaz. Last night and in the exhibition Destiny was point when Sug wasn’t on the floor - even when Destiny and Chaz were on the floor at the same time.
