Oh no! That's very disappointing. Best wishes to Chaz on her future endeavors.

Welp. Big loss especially at the backup PG position. I guess she agreed with me that she should’ve been getting more playing time. It would’ve been better if she had just decided to transfer right after last season. I now have serious doubts about this team. Good luck to Chaz.

All players want to play, especially those who are so highly-ranked players coming out of high school; and, they all have egos.

I'm sure it did not sit well with her or her family that she was the last healthy player off the bench to see action last night.

Timing hurts everybody. She could have just continued playing out the semester (to see how things go in the next few games), as she can't transfer until the Fall semester is over in mid-December. But, I guess she'd had enough of not playing when you factor in last season.

Ugh. Well, she wants to play. Can't blame her for that. A kid that scores over 3,000 points during 4 years of high school should expect to play more than she has. I'm impressed with the fact that she stayed through the summer and probably felt she worked hard enough to get more PT than she's had the first two games.

I guess she saw the writing on the wall with Destiny doing so well last night. I thank her for trying to stick it out and realizing that it isn't going to work for her expectations of herself.

The problem is that I don’t think Destiny can run the PG position consistently and successfully against better competition. Destiny is also one of the best shooters on the team and would be more effective off the ball to free her up for looks.

Unfortunate. The right system means everything and Texas isn't the right system for ChazzTheReal. Wish her well.

All I said about Destiny is that she played well last night. I don't pretend to know if she will be a good PG. Things happen and a team has to work with what they have. I guess we will see.

Wow. The talent and ability is there for Patterson to contribute not just minutes, but to make an impact for this team. As a true point guard, I figured she'd be backing up Sug. and don't think Destiny was the writing on the wall because they play different positions.

She played well last night but I was SHOCKED to see true freshman Joanne Allen-Taylor coming off the bench before Patterson. I think there is something more behind this that we don't know.

I just don’t get it. I was all for Chaz, Rellah, and Destiny not getting playing time last year because there was experience and depth at those positions. But to have a freshman coming in before her and having a 2 guard in Destiny running PG over her, I just don’t understand it. Mark my words TEXAS IS going to struggle not having a player like Chaz that can shoot/score in bunches. .:soapbox:

With Chasity now joining Rellah as transfers for the 2017 class, we only have Destiny left; and, Destiny was a late addition and only became an option after Cynthia Cooper was fired at USC and she was released from her LOI. So, a very unfortunate situation for our 2017 class, as a whole; only way to better balance it is to add a JUCO transfer for next season (which doesn't seem likely at this point).

This makes sense. She seemed unhappy when she finally got off the bench and seemed to launch her first ball (and scored) as if, "See, I can DO THIS" to the coaches. I guess this new rule of not being limited to where you can transfer (which I support) is empowering them to announce earlier so other coaches can come calling.

This is a serious bummer. Like others, I have not understood why she hasn't gotten many more minutes so far this season. Unlike the little bit she played last year, she has shot great this year in her limited court time. I don't blame her one bit for leaving, but it hurts our team and likely our team's reputation. What is behind this? Why didn't Aston play her more? I like Destiny, but Chaz is obviously a lot quicker and, IMO, would likely have been one of the best three point shooters we have ever had. (Remember she beat everyone, male and female, in the McDonald's 3 point contest, and she shot great in the "Tip Off" game this year.) She and Rellah, both with so much potential (not to stress it too much, but the 2 "stars" of the McDonald's game that year)... now gone, with so few minutes played in a Texas uniform. This is a very bad thing. Good luck to her.

I'm still upset about this. I don't get a lot of things. Why is Jada starting and getting so much playing time? Nothing against her, but I just don't think she has the natural basketball touch or the scoring ability of a Patterson. (I realize they play different positions.) Charli has tremendous potential and should be getting more time than Jada. They need to figure out some more ways to get Charli the ball when she is in. She and Jatarie are a pretty powerful combo. Was Aston trying to teach Chaz some kind of "lesson", or did she just not see that much potential there? Who knows? Thinking about this, and our not signing more top players in the 2019 class, has me worried. Of course, it's a great thing that Celeste is coming. (Hope she doesn't change her mind.)

I think Charli gets quite a bit more playing time if not for 2 issues - fouls and 2 significant injuries. Just a guess but if only 1 of Joyner or Sedona is out, she either starts at PF (Joyner out) or she’s the primary backup to both Jatarie and Joyner (Sedona out). Even with the current injury situation, her minutes have largely been affected by foul issues. Including the exhibition, refs have called Charli for 9 fouls in 37 minutes of game time - 1 every 4 minutes on the floor. I think at least 2 of the fouls that were called in the Duquesne game were nonsense. Once games are in hand and Karen doesn’t have to worry so much about having bodies in the game, I believe Charli will get as many minutes as she can.

I say this with NO information just a different outside point of view actually maybe some of you on here can enlighten me more about Patterson. Being able to score over 3,000 points as a pg in high school doesn’t really help you on the highest level of college basketball any coach at this level can draw up a play to get any player an open look and most of these kids can and will score so what you look for as well as need especially at the pg position is a player who has a very high iq, who knows every play in the playbook but also knows where each of her teammates responsibility lies, if play breaks down then knows what to call or have the patience depending on shot clock to pull out look over to coach to wait for next play all the while Talking to her teammates helping them get into the correct position so play can run effectively. Also make sure playmakers get touches but not ignoring other players from getting their touches as well. I can go on but I would bore you and I’m sure you get the point on what coaches at this level look for in a pg besides being the best vocal leader on the team. If player desires to shoot and score a whole lot then the player should either not be listed as a pg or find a team that doesn’t require the pg to do the things I listed above. I don’t know Patterson nor have I seen her play so I don’t know if she possessed the things I mentioned this is where I would lean on you guys. From what I’ve seen of KA and her teams she does require her pg’s to do these things and then some

I'm not surprised she left. These young ladies want to play. #1 PG in her class and still riding the pine into her sophomore season. Yep I probably would have left too. Man, I just posted we must score and a scorer leaves the next day. I really would like to know what's the issue with coach not playing her.

Anyway let the guessing begin on where she lands. Who needs a PG? Will she get immediate eligibility? Will she leave the big 12? Who was on her top 5 list? Someone is receiving a gift. Man?!?!?!

Wish you all the best Chaz.

My guess is she announced leaving now because:
    1) get onto the NCAA transfer database so she can be officially recruited by other schools
    2) time to get paperwork to transfer to next school
    3) to start Spring 2019 at new school
    4) "redshirt" from Fall 2018 - Fall 2019 - because she's only been in 1 game
    5) be able to play for new team Spring 2020
    6) 3 years eligibility

I support players going elsewhere to find playing time because all too often they were trapped by coaches not allowing to play in X-conference or Y-school. Always thought that was unfair. Now, on the other side I think that talent shows out. If you've got "IT" for your particular coach and your particular teammates, it would be obvious and you would have more playing time. Looking back to our most recent "superstar", Brooke McCarty, I remember seeing her the first time and thinking, "Who is this girl?"

Let's go back to the wayback machine. The recruiting rankings from the 2014 signing class:

    Two red highlights:
    1) Ariel - was exactly who we hoped she would be
    2) Brooke - Number 29? The third best PG? Oh yeah, she obviously had the talent it was she was 5-4.

    Pink highlight:
The second ranked PG. Looked at her path.
UCLA -> transferred -> Texas Tech -> grad transfer -> Cal

    Blue highlight:
Played all 4 years at OU, asked to play shooting guard her last year due to injuries. She was good, but Brooke was better.

Oakman presents a good synopsis of the role of point guard. I don't know if Patterson was a great point guard, but I do believe she was a natural shooter and had the potential of putting up a lot of points, something we have needed more of. Possibly shooting guard was a more natural fit. I don't know because I never saw her in high school. I just have the feeling that someone of much potential value to the team has been lost. (Obviously, I don't know what goes in practice or about relationships on the team.)

Just discouraging, IMHO...I think Coach Aston needs to take a hard look at her habit of taking in top ranked players like Chaz and them letting them stay on the bench..If I were a top-ranked HS player, I’d be looking at that and thinking TWICE about coming to Texas...Chaz worked her *** off and deserved better! :brickwall:

Not only am I disappointed, I'm pissed. It's almost as if Chaz was being punished for some reason. She hustled her butt off in the time she got while Sug was lazy and careless with the ball. It's ridiculous the freshmen went in before Chaz in the exhibition and the 1st game. I'll admit I don't go to practice but if Chaz was any type of cancer at all we most certainly would have heard about it somewhere. You could see it with Rellah on the court. She was one of the most talented players I've ever seen, but also the laziest.

So now who is the back up PG? I'm excited to see the improvement in Destiny, but like said above she's not a B12 PG. Texas will probably end up playing against Chaz in the tournament in a couple of years and she'll probably kick our butt. This will certainly hurt recruiting, especially in the Houston area.

    Shame on you Karen.

Unless you attend practice and other workout sessions every day (I don't), you have no idea who works hard and who does not. So, you are free to speculate; but, your statements don't hold water if you don't have facts to support them.

Redshirt and transfer rules seem to be changing all the time. While I realize football has a new rule which allows a player to redshirt if they play in no more than 4 games in one season, I don't think other sports have adopted that rule yet.

So, by Chaz playing 9 minutes in one game to begin the 2019 season, she burned an entire semester of eligibility. So, she'll have 2.5 seasons of eligibility remaining (unless she gets a waiver, which are becoming more common these days).

Wow, that's a big leap. I agree that Sug is careless with the ball and I had also hoped to see Chaz play more to see if she could unseat Sug. But I've seen Karen sit players for attitude or grades and I don't think it applied here. What if it's something as simple as skill level or her skill level in relationship to the team? What if it was simply a bad fit for this type of team?

Without having any idea as to why Chazz made her decision, hear are my random thoughts:

    1) If the coaching staff isn't bothered by her wanting to transfer, then the roster management of when Chazz entered the game the other night and how many minutes she played resulted in the most likely outcome

    2) If the coaching staff did NOT want her to transfer, then I think some mistakes were made as far as reading the situation and communicating properly. I mean, she played in the game on Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon (less than 24 hours later), she is posting on twitter that she is transferring. That's not much time for coaches, players, and family to think things through, sit down and discuss, and make a thorough decision. So, there have to be other issues going back to last season.

    3) I thought Chazz would be a big contributor based on her ball handling and shooting; but, I was still surprised that we signed her a year after signing Sug (of course, I assumed PG was her future position in college)

    4) Sug will be a senior in 2019. So, by not signing PG in 2018 (unless you count Allen-Taylor), and possibly not signing a PG in 2019 (unless Endyia chooses Texas), we are putting a lot of eggs in the 2020 class basket. Even then, the depth and spacing is not ideal. Coaches will have to find a way to balance out the recruiting classes (especially the 2017 class), and the PG roster depth.
