I will admit I knew nothing about Dan Crenshaw until I saw him on SNL. Since then, I have been reading about his guy, and, I think he has the same charisma, smarts, and "it" factor to energize the Republicans that voted for Beto. This is exactly the kind of people the Republican party needs. He understands that we lost districts that we used to win, and is trying to figure out why and shake things up.

I haven't done 100% of the homework I need to do, but what I have seen/read so far is on point.
He knows we need to make the republican party exciting again. He knows we can't keep electing old, white, rich guys or we will lose the Republican party in next 50 years. He knows we need to reach out to the young voter, and not look like idiots while doing so.
He agrees with Trump on some issues, such as protecting the border, but he isn't a Trump-ite. He has been compared to Will Hurd, who I like very much.

If you don't read the article, here is just one way he is revitalizing the party. In his district in Houston, he ran 100 miles, (as in literally running, no car!) through the district, stopping in pubs, bars, groups and meetings along the way to talk to the young voters. He is targeting the same age group as Beto. And yes, millennial voters find this kind of thing cool. (no skateboards or air guitars, just old fashioned running)

He made even my liberal friends impressed by the way he handled the SNL situation, and was quoted as saying, "We need to quit suing each other, or demanding that people lose their jobs...it has gotten out of hand. I want to show that Rs and Ds can talk to each other, listen, agree to disagree, but respect each other"

Lastly, in my opinion, he is way, way hotter than Beto. I hate to say it, but that seems to matter with the suburban housewives that the Rs lost in the midterms.
I like the cut of this man's gib. (jib?) I'm going to be reading much more about him. As of last night, Beto has done a total 180 and said he is now seriously running for President. The Republican party better wake up and find more Dan Crenshaws.

Dan Crenshaw started the week as a punchline and ended it as a star. The real story came before that.

But can he ride a skateboard?

In all seriousness though, he seems like a great guy and very charasmatic. He has a bright future.

Unfortunately, the media hates Republicans and would find a reason or reasons to vilify him and work hard to derail any run. Hell, they will make up stuff.

They are already calling him a racist? Based on being a Republican probably. If you have any association to Trump the label gets added quickly.

    what republican voted for Beto?

Not saying that all republicans have to be in lock step, necessarily, but the philosophies/positions/proposals for/as US Senator could not have been more different.

If a Beto voter identifies as a republican ... they were never republican.

But I agree ... Dan Crenshaw. augment and promote!

The hilarious/sad part is that O'Rourke fits that description more than Cruz does.

Stat, that is why Beto was a complete farce. White, old, and rich running on being brown, young, and everyman. The sad thing was so many people were completely and willfully deceived. Just him going by Beto should have been enough to tank his campaign. Cultural appropriation at its worst. But being skinny, saying F*** at rallies, and speaking in platitudes is all anyone cared about.

Then you had Cruz trying talking about freedom and jobs. His voice is nasally so people didn't want to vote for him. I have republican friends who didn't vote for him because democrats say he is unlikable. It was a frustrating election for me.

I'm sure there were some confused people who voted for Beto ...

but no one ... I mean no one who can think for themselves and be without adult supervision in public and voted for Beto could claim to be a republican. They are being less than sincere or certainly less than informed on the republican platform and/or Beto's campaign.

The only two things Beto suggested in the campaign which made any sense (for being a US Senator) are 180 out from his party's actions and platform ... and actually his own voting record as a congressman --- but hey ... he's cool.

I ran across this facebook note early this summer and fully endorse it. Beto urged term limits and an end to gerrymandering ... but I remember when the democrats did this very thing so is it really going to happen with Beto and a democrat controlled Congress? He opposed tariffs because Trump proposed 'em ... that's been one of the few righteous democrat federal issues. It's been a weird campaign.

Evidently being cool was enough for NY's 14th. SMH.

Most voters aren't ideological - even self-proclaimed "Republicans." They vote for what "feels right". They don't go look at specific policy preferences and vote accordingly. They look at the candidate with which they most "identify" and vote accordingly. That's true of the so-called "well-educated" and the ignorant. We're just not that deep.

That was a lopsidedly Democratic district. It shouldn't surprise anyone that it preferred a staunch leftist over a pragmatic moderate.

You know Beto is 46 years old, right? His parents have called him Beto since he was a little kid growing up in El Paso - whether you like it or not its a fact.

What is the source for your "fact" that his parents called him Beto? He was called "Bob" in college and in his punk rock days. My source is a video that was played on the Facebook site "What's up El Paso" where you could hear the MC calling him Bob.
Also, you should actually think instead of just regurgitating democrat tp. Why would 2 lily white parents of means call their kid Beto? Did they think he was hispanic?

Y'all are seriously underestimating the appeal of Beto. While I personally don't get it, don't support him, would never vote for him, I believe he will run for President in 2020. If you think the fact that he has a Mexican nickname will deter him from winning, or getting a VP nod, I think you are seriously wrong.
I have many of those educated white suburban women as friends, real friends, not just the Facebook liberals. They see him as a fresh face, with new ideas and the same charisma as a Kennedy, or Obama. Some of my friends are Christian, and struggle with the whole open border "help thy neighbor" over the abortion issue. They justify it by believing, probably correctly, that abortions will continue, legal or not. Others are tired of the hatred in the country, and think voting for someone new will help calm things down, and don't really get what he stands for. He makes it kind of hard. If you read his official web page, his issue section is very vague about the hows, and sounds very kumbaya.

The old, white rich men I was referring to are people in their 70s, like Biden, and Trump, or >shudder< HRC. While Beto is certainly wealthy, he is seen as a young, vigorous candidate, who "gets" the younger voter. We need to face the fact that many of these voters were Bernie folk.
They think they want free everything, and are too stupid, naive, blind, idealistic, fill in the blank- to understand that it won't work. Remember how many wanted Bernie instead of Hillary? And he was older than dirt, crotchety, a nobody and he still might have won the vote without Dem shenanigans. Now, replace him with a Kennedy-esque looking dude they think is cool, hip, and like them.
There are already signs in many yards around here, using his campaign font and colors, that say "To Be 2020" (get it, it's a scramble of Beto's name, coooool)

My point is the R party needs to start understanding their base, and to quote Crenshaw, make it ok to be a Republican, or conservative if we want to reclaim the people we lost in the mid-terms, and young voters. We can laugh at Skateboard, or rock dude, and believe me I have, BUT, he came very close to winning Texas. I think the R party may have grown complacent about winning Texas, and lots of people don't like Ted Cruz, but 3 points is still too damn close.
We lose Texas, we have lost the nation.

So, I'm not going to whistle past the graveyard. I knew Trump had grabbed a hold of lightening in a bottle, and I feel the same way about Beto. I don't think Trump will win again. I like many of his policies, but he has turned off too many people with his tweets and inappropriate actions and timing. It's frustrating because even when he is correct (such as talking about forest maintenance, according to my friend who is a Fire Chief in Houston) you don't tweet it while people are literally burning to death in their cars. This kind of thing should nauseate the staunchest of Trump supporters.

I have read Dan Crenshaw's position on the issues, and I agree with every one of them. This is the type of candidate we need if we have any chance in 2020. Again, this is one woman's opinion, but I was right about Trump, and perhaps I have insight into the woman voter that some of you don't. It absolutely confounds me, and I absolutely don't get it based on his views, but Beto will be a force to be reckoned with. I'm using Crenshaw as a template for who the Rs should be grooming. This is not a lets elect Crenshaw message, paid for by Hollandtx and the Committee to elect Dan Crenshaw. (although I do approve of this message:smile1::usflag:
PS How about those 'Horns!!! :hookem:

He is younger than Biden but he is still a middle aged guy trying to act young. I have kids and they roll their eyes at me if I try to say or act too hip. I am younger and much better looking than O'Rourke too. :smile1:

I have seen the school picture with the "BETO" sewn on the sweater. It is still appropriation to use that name now that he is 46 and running for a US Senate seat. Maybe if his family calls him that and always has my mind could be changed. I have serious doubts of that though. That said it seems very douchy either way.

So leftists (and the media) pitch a gigantic fit when Hillary lost, and then they blame the GOP for the hatred? God save us. It’s like how to parent a disobedient child: do what is best for the long term, or give in.

Only people who would never vote for him in the first place would ever care about this. Democrats don't care about it because it's against their interests to. Moderates and independents won't care because the media will downplay it's importance.

As always, Hollandtx is correct. We have a terrible branding problem when it comes to suburbanites and young people. If we don't fix it, we are in trouble.

Having trouble reconciling these two statements, @Mr. Deez

If we vote party just because we always have (not ideological) ... then why would a leftist necessarily win any given district? Why would a conservative?

My intent is NOT to argumentative ... I just don't understand why the coin doesn't apply in both examples.

I don't know any of your references personally, but being a professing/practicing (when I surrender)/believing in The Amazing Grace Christian ... I know the "sort" you reference. Their "cross to bear" is doing God's work for Him ... they would rather the government do than they do personally ... or even as The Church because their faith is lacking; that's not a flame, I have my trials on this too, but I am inclined to keep government where it belongs and in charity is NOT it. Govt CAN'T be charitable, it can only Robin Hood resources.

I don't doubt their sincerity, their intentions, their beliefs ... I only challenge the method by which they'd seek to exercise those convictions; government ... "my do it" .... or with a Church organization "He does it and I get to join Him."

... and so they tend to vote for democrats.

I could even entertain this notion for someone who's on their 4th re-election bid ... though I still think it's foolhardy to toss ideology for a feeling. This was Cruz' first re-election. Now whether that ideology is pursued with results in reality is too often a different matter, but if you understand the sanctity of innocent human life, you cannot support a democrat because supporting the legalized killing of unborn babies is their central pillar in the platform. They'd sooner concede gun control than abortion.

totally agree ... but I understand the movement isn't about being cool on a skateboard, it's about demanding socialism (at least right now). As that increases, so will the results in representation. I think it's part of the disintegration of our society. History tells us this happens and even to The Great Experiment. I wonder how long the Founders really gave the new nation? Certainly the relationship with government is a FAR cry now from what it was then (no, not referencing AR15s or ink wells).

#HisSilentinBengHazi had to cheat in the democrat primary to beat FeelTheBern for crying out loud. Granted she was a terrible candidate and both of the honest democrats understood that ... but the emergence of this "democratic socialist" actually has a popular association to it! blows my mind. People are just going maniacal.

Absolutely agree with this, too. A conservative war hero who can be popular with those who don't think, too.

Yep. It's clear that he learned a lot by watching Obama. Young, hip, articulate without sounding overly offensive or even really saying anything of substance. Many women would vote for him just because he's cute and they would love to have a "cute" president like JFK. Many young people would love to vote for him because he is charismatic, promises them everything for free, and speaks about SJW issues.

Its a sad commentary on our electorate but being younger (<50), cool, articulate, and attractive will make a candidate nearly unbeatable regardless of their qualifications. I am scared shitless that this son of a b*tch runs for POTUS because he would likely win (Case in point: Obama).

Thank you for that perspective. It helps to understand at the same time it is really concerning.
This"I have many of those educated white suburban women as friends, real friends, not just the Facebook liberals. They see him as a fresh face, with new ideas and the same charisma as a Kennedy, or Obama"

New ideas? He is for open borders, abolishing ICE, against trying to get better trade deals for Americans and of course impeaching Trump who made their bank accounts & 401ks better and Trump made life better for so many minorities who I would guess are part of those educated women's oppressed groups.
Is that their idea of "fresh Ideas.
I am just nonplussed to understand what he stands for that they think is fresh and achievable.
Do you just shake your head?

He's just like Obama. They are both like a Dem new car, all flashy and shiny on the outside, but when you look under the hood, the engine is from a '60s Lada.
