Coaches returning are a mixed bag.
Bill Snyder won a Big 12 title after his return to Kansas State.
Bobby Petrino’s second Louisville run was good, not great, until this year it collapsed.
Chris Ault at Nevada had his best season (2010) during his second stint.
John Robinson’s second tenure at USC was good not great.
Meanwhile, Johnny Majors’ second stint at Pitt was terrible.
History is clear that second stints are mixed bags and your “you can’t go home again” statement is an opinion that is not supported by the history of college football.
Mack may succeed or may not. He is the last person to know how to succeed at North Carolina. Whether that will work again remains to be seen. History shows sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Due to the failures of his previous successors, the bar for success at UNC is currently pretty low. Finishing ranked a couple of times and winning a couple of bowl games would make Mack Brown the best North Carolina head coach since... Mack Brown.
