Happy for Mack but don't see it as a great hire. As I said on another thread "you can't go home again". Trust me, I learned this one the hard way.

In Mack Brown’s last season at North Carolina (1997), they finished #4 and #7 in the polls and won the Gator Bowl.

In the 21 seasons since Mack Brown left, North Carolina has only finished ranked one time (#15 in both polls) and they got murdered in their bowl game by Baylor that year.

Just finishing ranked twice and winning a couple of bowl games would be improvement over all of his successors.

Tough job, may as well give the last successful coach another shot.

    Which is entirely irrelevant.

Coaches returning are a mixed bag.

Bill Snyder won a Big 12 title after his return to Kansas State.

Bobby Petrino’s second Louisville run was good, not great, until this year it collapsed.

Chris Ault at Nevada had his best season (2010) during his second stint.

John Robinson’s second tenure at USC was good not great.

Meanwhile, Johnny Majors’ second stint at Pitt was terrible.

History is clear that second stints are mixed bags and your “you can’t go home again” statement is an opinion that is not supported by the history of college football.

Mack may succeed or may not. He is the last person to know how to succeed at North Carolina. Whether that will work again remains to be seen. History shows sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Due to the failures of his previous successors, the bar for success at UNC is currently pretty low. Finishing ranked a couple of times and winning a couple of bowl games would make Mack Brown the best North Carolina head coach since... Mack Brown.

I had hoped he would ride into the sunset and take up a sort of permanent DKR-like role as advisor and mentor to TH or whomever is the head coach at Texas. An elderly statesman if you will.

Naturally, I don't wish to see him not do well at UNC, but in my mind it sort of diminishes his legacy at Texas by going back to UNC.

Many will disagree, and that's fine. Just my opinion.

If Mack is bringing Kingsbury and Chizic, I think he will do well at UNC. Best of luck, Mack.

Snyder has one Big 12 championship in 11 years of his second tenure at KSU. Describing Robinson's second go round at USC as a good not great is being generous. And for all those content to poop my post with no explanation why: grow a pair.

yeah, "what happened to me, happens to everyone always" is not what i think. but i do think there's lots of reasons it creates difficulties.

Snyder had one Big 12 Championship at Kansas State during his first stint. That is one each stint. Winning a conference title at all at Kansas State is a successful stint.

My definition of success is higher than 1 conference championship in 11 years. Would you consider the same record for Herman a success?

The definition of success at Texas and K-State is apples to oranges.
Mack only had two in his stint at UT.
    One leading to a MNC.
Any conference championship at K-State is a great achievement.

Will UNC be a power running team next year or an uptempo offense? What about the next year? Oh well, at least Mad Dog will have a job again.

First of all this isn't about Snyder. He's a great coach who deserves the utmost respect. Mack trying to recapture past glory is a another matter.

I think this is a mistake on MBs part. You can't go home again is right, and it's usually because now you are a lot older than you were then. MB was coach at UNC 20 years ago. Maybe it will work since Florida State is on their *** this time around. IDK but I would like to see Tech own up to their mistake and hire Mike Leach back.

"Recruiting matters" as someone on here said...

Does Mack have the energy. Can he sell his commitment for a five-year haul to the parents?

I'm no insider, but North Carolina has had so much bad publicity that Mack is the right man to clean the program up and keep it clean. That was my impression of him: He cares about the classroom and running a clean program.

That is almost as important than winning to some people. Well, maybe a couple of folks; who am I kidding?

Didn't our graduation rate decline badly during Mack's last few years or I am remembering completely wrong? (wouldn't be the first time!)

True this. But seems most "big" recruits are mostly interested in being a starter day one or at a minimum getting "significant playing time" the first year. They want to do 3 and jump to the NFL draft. They want their "touches" more than teamwork. They want TV exposure and playing in CCGs Playoff Games and NCGs, generally not interested in education. Not always true, but that's the impression a lot of them present.

I don't know the answer to that. I just thought maybe he was on it. I do recall Charlie "running off" some of Mack's players. Maybe I'm wrong on this one.

Same theory as aggy and Kansas hiring Fisher and Miles respectively. Now UNC can claim their HC football coach has the same number of NC's as Dabo has at the Sons of Klem.

That is theory; not say it is a stupid argument or not. Of the 3 only aggy overpaid for their guy.
