In theory yes, but I believe the highest-ranked Group of 5 team (UCF) is guaranteed a place in a "top 6" New Year's game. If Texas wins the XII CG they will be locked into the Sugar Bowl; if Texas loses they will go to San Antonio.

The Big XII Champion is obligated to go to the Sugar Bowl unless the earn a berth in the CFB. If this occurs the second place team goes. Thus in the unlikely event that ou beats Texas and gets into the CFP, either Texas or WVa goes to the Sugar Bowl and the other goes to San Antonio.

FWIW, the Sugar Bowl gets the highest ranked Big 12 team, regardless of record.

Since the ADs for OU, Ohio State and GA are all on the 13 member committee (along with two other ADs) it should be interesting to see how these three teams are treated in the event that OU should beat Texas. Could be a long night of indulgence and OU is good at this game. Problem is, their defense could not beat either of the other two. But like the press, they could be the committee’s little Huckleberry.
You can bet your sweet a- - that IF Texas was in the running, they damn sure would not get any love from these ADs.

Texas MUST beat the hell out of OU!

Seems to be a little confusion among the Big 12
    Go figure

In any event, if I am reading the tea leaves correctly, regardless of the outcome of our game we will be in the Sugar Bowl (vs. Georgia maybe)

If we had a 16-team playoff using latest CFB rankings --

    16 WVU at 1 Bama
    15 UK at 2 Clemson
    14 Texas at 3 ND
    13 Wazzu at 4 UGA
    12 PennSt at 5 OU
11 Wash at 6 Ohio St
    10 LSU at 7 Mich
    9 UF at 8 UCF

    Seems like fun

Until the first year of the playoffs I was a staunch supporter of 8 teams. Now I believe 4 is enough. It should be difficult to get in. That's not a popular opinion but it's mine.

I think 8 is doable just have the caveat that you have to win your conference to play in it. The committee can rank the conference winners to seed the tournament.

4 is doable only if you remove the Committee and all of its inherent desires and standardize the rules (play the same number of conference games, no-FCS games, and be in a conference). Since all of that isn't going to happen 8 is the minimum - the 5 Power 5 Conference Champions plus the 3 highest rated Group of 5 Conference Champions. Winning something has to count.

No special deal for ND. Get in a conference or drop down to FCS.

This trend is terrible....sorry, just don’t accept the “other” side of this argument. I would advise my son to play out his commitment. “Me First” is a bad value set in life.

Ed Olliver took it all to a new level this year
He is not just taking off their bowl game but will have taken off almost all of the last 6 games of their entire season (incldg bowl), almost half their entire season

While watching the Army-Navy game, it makes me realize how pampered & spoiled the rest of the college football players are. Do you think one of these kids would be allowed to sit out a bowl game? The sacrifice these Academy kids make to keep up with their classwork, military regimin & football is unimaginable. Again, I have zero sympathy or understanding for these other kids who skip out on a bowl game....maybe they should think hard about these Army & Navy kids!

I may be alone in this, but I think it tarnishes your legacy at your school. Also, if you do this for my University I feel you are never eligible for a T ring. Just my $0.02...

I'll state up front that I'm not a big fan of kids skipping bowl games. Having said that, you have to look at Grier's situation. His team finished 4th and are headed to a somewhat meaningless bowl. I can't remember the last time I had a conversation in which the Camping World Bowl came up. IIRC, kids don't skip the upper tier bowls. Grier's focus is on playing in the NFL. What effect would a torn ACL have on his draft status, or his career? Also, who might be whispering in his ear? Agents? NFL teams? Again, I don't like the idea of kids skipping bowls, but the NFL is their ultimate goal and they have to decide what they need to do to get there.

Agree, but how do we factor in the effect the CFP has has had on all the other bowl games? How long will fans continue to care about these "lesser bowls"? Were the players just ahead of the curve?

As to Ed Oliver, UH might have a claim he owes them some money back.

Not sure what the answer is, but these kids should pay some price for this decision. Maybe strip them of their “Letter Man” privileges. Too many case-by-case factors for each kid. But, if this gets out of control, we’ll be left wth 4 teams in the CFP & the “who cares” bowl lineup.
