Now on unpaid, permanent leave (a/ Rose Bowl)

Was this the original deal he cut with school admin?

So he's retiring again. Didn't realize he'd had brain surgery in 2014.

My aggy buddy likes to tell me they "almost" (i.e. his name was mentioned) hired him back when he was at Utah. I guess that's when they hired Franchione away from Bama.

I don’t get how Tom Herman had anything to do with it except to help out the wife in the scandal. Did he publicly say anything about the situation?

Now Meyer will calmly wait for Brian Kelley to stumble and then he’s the next Notre Dame coach....

The anger of the Ohio State fans is a form of mass psychosis. They should be embarrassed that they did not acknowledge the domestic abuse and enabling problems. But they aren't. They instead are hostile and arrogant.

A special place in hell. For who? People that uncovered and reported domestic abuse? Even if Herman did have something to do with what happened, so what? Is he supposed to turn a blind eye?

"Who told?" That's what a child asks...

In a spirit of openness, I will confess I was one of the ones arguing back ~2011 that we should should immediately force Mack to "retire" and go after Urban, who was on TV by then and who had long admired our program. I had already been sounding the alarm about Mack Brown for a couple years by then. Although I can't remember if I was posting on this site at the time. Impossible to say how that would have turned out for us. But it burned me somewhat to watch how quickly he turned that program around, while ours turned into a laughing stock.

Ohio St went 6-7 in 2011 (Tressel left a/ 2010). Then went 12-0 in their first year under Meyer (but ineligible, see Tressel). In his 7 seasons (2011 thru 2018-to-date), tOSU went 85-9, with 1 natty while in the hunt for several more. Not only that, but with Mack's grip on in-state recruiting slipping away, they came in here and took a bunch our best players who always seemed to play prominent roles in helping them to those records. That always bugged the heck out of me.

So I guess now all of the Zack Smith idiocy casts this entire story in a different light. But I do not think it would be proper for me to pretend today, despite Smith, that I did not desperately want to switch Brown for Meyer at Texas back in the day. Because I did. I know this sort of opinion ticks off the Legion of Brown. So be it.

Here is the deal, those of us who follow recruiting closely could see what was coming for our program, much in advance of the great bulk of UT fans who did not follow recruiting. We also had some more obvious issues with Brown's assistant coaches. Despite the great runs in 2008 and 2009, the program was on a treacherous downward trajectory and the future was bleak. We constantly sounded the alarm on how Brown and his staff had let recruiting deteriorate. But, despite many arguments with Brown-supporters at that time, the reality was our complaints meant absolutely nothing so long as Dodds was in control. So then we began complaining about Dodds too, but the reality was our complaints about Brown and Dodds meant absolutely nothing as long as Powers was in control. So the warnings and complaints were all for nothing and the actual results are history.

Zach Smith makes it easy for those opponents from back in the day to point the finger now and say "look what we avoided!" Plus, there is the issue of Meyer's often off-beat behavior in general. He is an odd duck. But there is no way of knowing that things would have happened the same way here over the same period. Maybe Smith would never have been hired. And no telling where Tom Herman would be now. Would we have had another MNC? Or more? It's impossible to say. I do believe Meyer would have cleaned up in recruiting in Texas. Why? Because he is a top-shelf recruiter and recognizer of talent. And if you believe this state has the best high school players in the country, then who knows what might have happened?

Assuming he's "clean," I really like Day. He represents everything that today's offenses should aspire to do. tOSU finished 2nd in total offense to OU, and although they didn't run the ball as well as they typically have in the past, they still had a nice 2-to-1 ratio of passing to running, which is way more balanced than Leach's offenses ever were at Tech.

His offense would fit in nicely in the Big XII. I can see why Wilson spurned us for tOSU.

I assume Garrett Wilson is still solid tOSU, especially since Day recruited him....???

I always like to point out that Joe Paterno didn't abuse those children, but he enabled a coach to do so.

Urban Meyer didn't abuse his wife or anyone else, but he enabled an assistant to do so by not confronting the situation when he was made aware.

Court of public opinion finds both guilty.

I have no idea what Zach Smith will ever do to make a living? He actually might be better off going to jail, as he would at least have 3 meals a day and all the abusive love he wants.

Urban might coach again, but I highly doubt it.

Ohio State fans are a joke. But no less of a joke than most of America. This country has no moral value, they only care about what benefits them and will pursue this and justify any means necessary to get it.

Tom Herman at worst blew the whistle on a guy beating his wife. Yet it's Ohio State fans that are angry at him.

As far as we know, Tom didn't beat his wife, it sounds like he cheated on her, but that is a totally different issue. Urban had full control of the situation as far as just telling the truth. He didn't and now he is caught. This isn't Tom's fault or the fault of the reporter, this is on Zach and Urban.

No doubt. People will rationalize or ignore anything that gets in the way of their drug whether it's a pill, a bottle, a joint or gridiron glory from their favorite team. We can call it a lack of morals (maybe just a symptom) or deeper still, emotional immaturity fired by an inferiority complex that requires external validation (SEC SEC SEC).

Seems like the earlier tit-for-tat trash talk between UM and TM ("pixie dust"), combined with the subsequent Smith fiasco would have squished whatever small chance there might have been of that ever happening.

If Urban firmly believes that Herman busted the Ohio State program then the hatred could go to all-time levels between the two programs. And the OU folks would be more than happy to hire one of the greatest coaches ever fired by that hatred along with the freshness of a year or two in the booth.

If UM brain cyst causes him as much pain as we have been led to believe, I believe he stays retired. Unless there is a solution to that issue. Nevertheless, no way in H*LL do I want him in Austin.
