For bowl practice, Ossai has been running first team B-backer, ahead of McCulloch

And DeMarvion Overshown back at safety -- IT speculates this is with an eye towards all the incoming LBs in 2019. However, Caleb Johnson has a torn labrum (long heal time) and some dont think Floyd, Tillman or Gbhenda will be ready (I disagree on Floyd). And with Jones coming back, LB may be the better way to get Overshown on the field. Sterns is still not practicing, so this might be whats really going on. We will see

The OTs next season, as of now, look like
    Cosmi at LT
    Kerstetter at RT
They say Angilau is looking better
Or, maybe TJohnson (who is an EE) will blow them away at RT in the Spring which would let Kerstetter move to C? (this is more my idea than anyone else's). Herman did make a point of emphasizing Johnson is good enough to play any position on the OL.
Okafor could either play inside or be the swing OT (that first year for him was pretty unfair but he has some talent)

Herman's coaching style continues to remind me more and more of OA Phillips - I have my favorites, don't bother me with statistics or abilities.

Just a reminder, that Bum NEVFR won a championship at any level - not high school, not college, not NFL

Yeah but he took a bunch of ragtags to the AFC championship game 2 years in a row. Seriously, Andy Dorris, Ken Kennard, Carl Mauck? Talk about a miracle.

Yes, and he also had the ball inside the Garland 10 five times on his home field and lost the State Championship to Coach Bill Ellington 3-0.

Then there was the time in 1963 that Coach Tom Landry paid him to come to Dallas to install what would become known as "the numbers defense" in preparation for the Packers visit to The Cotton Bowl. Pack scored over 40 on the C'boys.

Or when he was DC at SMU with Lance Van Zandt, and came to Memorial Stadium as a 10-12 point dog, and DKR hung almost 50 on his defense.

Never knew the deal, but he never liked Coach Royal or Texas. May have stemmed from Bum's one year at A&M (DKR wasn't in Austin yet) or his years at UTEP.

The NFL compared to high school. That's certainly equitable. Good point.

Point is that he NEVER won a title at any level. If anything, he was better in NFL than other levels, because he really couldn't relate to kids.

He did play favorites, and it cost his teams.

Don't forget Guido Merkins, who was Pastorini's softball teammate and Johnny Dirden who was driving a cement truck when they signed him.

Wasn't exactly what Coach Ellington or my Dad said, but I'll accept it. Horrible weather in Nederland that day.

This is a very interesting observation. I have no idea whether or not it’s accurate in the case of Herman, but something about his player selection (who he plays) must have prompted your comparison. So I have to ask the question, what is it that you have seen has you wondering? Buechele over Rising? Another example?

FWIW, Mack drove me crazy seeming for many years to give preferential treatment to upper classmen, regardless of apparent talent.

Ok, so my take is that, if just going out to the portal to see what's out there, it's in the best interest of everyone concerned. Somebody thinks the grass is greener, go take a look. Might find out you're not as "wanted" as you think (sort of like looking for a job while you have one). I agree, if you're looking, it's not a perfect situation, but it seems to be an "out in the open" sort of inquiry. I'm in this spot on the depth chart, looks to be a logjam (we have a thread about that), would it be better for me (and maybe Texas) if I went elsewhere?

I didn't like the preferential upperclassmen treatment either, wanted the best talent to get on the field. I think Herman is cut from that mold. Shane is good, Sam, a little better. Glad to have both. Here's my bold crystal ball into the future. I believe that Tom Herman will put us in more New Years Day games (and yes, the CFP) than Mack did. I know I'm sort of a Mack basher but yes I agree we won more games from 2000-2009 than in any other Texas Longhorn decade and Mack should get full credit. However, we always seemed to lose to OU (or then Tech) and then go to the glorious Holiday or Alamo or Cotton Bowl. Herman's second year, tasting Sugar! I don't think that's an accident or an aberration. Not discounting (no f-ing way) that Vince and Colt teams went to FOUR BCS games and won 3 of them. But Mack was here for about 16 years and won only two Big 12 titles (while Stoops won just a few more). It's going to be an uphill climb with the roll that OU is on winning and recruiting, but I think we're very close to being up there with them in the "rare air". I hope I've posted this with enough accolades to Mack & co to show what point I'm trying to make. So, NOT trying to tick anyone off, just theorizing about Herman maybe being able to get us in the top bowl games more often than Mack did in his stellar coaching career here.

I pretty much agree with this entire take.

I have had two fundamental concerns with Herman. First, humility, or lack of it. In this area, TH seems like a different person after the slow start this season. In other words, after being humiliated early, perhaps he did some soul searching and throttled it back
    a bit. He needed to.

The second area is what I will call “The Tony Robbins” Effect. It’s the ran rah, we love each other crapola. Team chemistry is not mandated. It’s organic. It evolves. A coach cannot force it. So when TH proclaims all the love stuff at a presser, I get queasy. I have to wonder if the chemistry, or the culture, isn’t working for some of the players, and that is part of the reason that they are working the portal.

The final version of the redshirt spreadsheet
To me, Okafor sort of stands out as a good thing. Wish he could have RSd his freshman year, but that was not possible
Unlike with Okafor, we were able to RS all of the freshmen OLs
+ Ojomo and Coburn (who both played meaningful snaps against Georgia)

I don't have the coaching pedigree that some of you have but I see some similarities w Herman and other coaches but very few with MB. Three years ago Texas was a car with three good tires, three windows and three steering wheels. What was good was damaged by what was not good or too much or too little of. Just a dang mess. Somehow TH has managed to persevere through a complete rebuild, something CS was completely unable to do. Frankly, MB tried to reinvent in his last few years and failed miserably.
I cannot think of a coach that reminds me of TH. Frankly TH at UH at TH in 2017 and MD in 2018 doesn't remind me of TH Sugar Bowl. He's young.

I'm assuming everyone with a red "NO RS" played in at least a 5th game? Since the others who played in 4 games also couldn't have played more without redshirting, yet don't have that annotation?

    From TFB --

Prior to Manny Diaz being hired at Temple, I’m told Texas DC Todd Orlando was in the running for the head coaching position at Temple.

With Diaz leaving to take the head job at Miami, we are again watching the situation at Temple. I’m told that a number of the other Temple candidates have taken jobs elsewhere and with his performance in the Sugar Bowl, I’d imagine Orlando is back in the running for the job at Temple.

Should something happen on that front, I am told that Texas would likely pursue LSU DC Dave Arranda.
