#11/11 Texas and #20/22 Iowa State will clash in Ames in a battle of undefeated Big 12 teams who are sitting at the top of the league. Both teams have the same season record (13-2) and Big 12 record (3-0) going into this game. ISU has a seven game winning streak while Texas will bring in a six game winning streak. ISU has a one game edge in the overall series (18-17) and in the Big 12 series (15-14). Horns have won six of the last seven games after suffering a three game losing streak. Horns won all three games last season: two regular season meetings and one conference tournament game.

    Iowa State Cyclones (13-2; 3-0)
The Cyclones have four of the top 30 scorers in the league, including three of the top ten. Bridget Carleton (#21, 6-1 Sr. G) ranks tops in the league with an average of 27.7 ppg. Kristin Scott (#25, 6-3 Soph. C) and Ashley Joens (#24, 6-0 Fr. G) rank 8th and 10th, respectively, with averages of 16.0 and 14.3 ppg. Alexa Middleton (#33, 5-9, RS Sr. G) is tied for 28th with Joyner at 10.3 ppg. Carleton has almost doubled the number of shot attempts of the other two nearest shooters. She has taken 51 shots to Joens 28 and Middleton’s 27. Scott has an almost out of sight shooting percentage of 85.7% on 18 of 21 shots. That’s tops in the Big 12. Joens (16-28; 57.1%), Carleton (28-51; 54.9) and Meredith Burkhall (#32, 6-3 Sr. F; 8-16; 50%) are the other Cyclones that have taken at least double digit shots who are hitting at least 50% of their shots. Joens (10-18; 55.6%), Carleton (7-18; 38.0%) and Madison Wise (#1, 6-1 Soph. F) at 3-12 (25%) are the main 3pt shooters for ISU. Scott has the highest 3pt FG% at 85.7% on 6 of 7. The Cyclones have five players making at least 85% of their FTs even though two have only hit 3 and 2 FTs. Middleton has made 11 of 12 (91.7%) while Carleton has the most attempts (20-23) for 87%. Scott is consistent, having made 6 of 7 for 85.7%. They help put ISU at the top the league wiith a team FT% of 75.3%.

Middleton and Carleton share the lead in assists per game with 6.3 apg each. That average also puts them at the top of the league as well as helping ISU lead in assists. Middleton (15 TOs) and Carleton (7 TOs) also account for just over half of ISU’s 42 TOs in league play. Scott leads the team in steals (5) and blocks (6). Carleton and Rai Johnson (#4, 5-7 Soph. G) each has four steals. Inès Nezerwa (#15, 6-3 Sr. F) has totaled four blocks while Wise has swatted away three.

Carleton, Joens, Middleton, Wise and Burkhall have started all 15 season games, including ISU’s first three league games. Carleton rarely comes off the court, averaging 36 mpg in league play. Wise is just behind that averaging 33 mpg. Joens (28.3 mpg) and Middleton (26.3 mpg) and Scott (20.7 mpg) are also putting in a bit of time on the court. Nezerwa, Johnson and Adriana Camber (#13, 5-10 Jr. F) all are in the teens while starter Burkhall averages 9.3 mpg. Nine of the twelve active players have played in all three league games while two have seen action in two games and one has played in one game.

    Texas Longhorns (13-2; 3-0)
Horns have four players in double digits in conference play: Sug (13.3 ppg), Danni (11.0 ppg), Destiny (11.0 ppg) and Joyner (10.3 ppg). Those four, along with Jatarie, average between 7.7 and 10.7 FG attempts per game. Audrey, at 75% (6-8) has the best FT%. Sug is second at 61.5% on 16 of 26 shots. Charli (44.4%), Olamide (43.8%) and Jatarie (43.5%) are the only others making at least 40% of their shots. Danni (8-17; 47.1%) and Destiny (5-13; 38.5%) both rank among the top 15 in the league in 3pt % and number of 3pters made per game. They, along with Sug (2-3; 66.7%) and Audrey (1-2; 50%), help Texas rank 3rd in the conference in 3pt%. Horns are at a poor 60.3% from the FT line as a team. That average is fueled by two of our top three FT shooters making less than 55% of their FT attempts. Joyner (8-17; 47.1%), Destiny (10-13; 76.9%) and Sug (6-11; 54.5%) have been the most proficient at getting to the FT line in league games.

Joyner is creeping close to a double double average in league play as she is grabbing 9.3 rebounds per game to go with her 10.3 ppg. Jatarie is second at 6.3 rpg while Olamide adds 5.7 rpg and Charli pitches in with 5.5 rpg. Sug has 15 assists. Her 5.0 apg is good enough to tie for fourth in the Big 12. Joyner has five assists while Danni has distributed four. Every active player has at least one assist through three games. Joyner (15), Sug (10) and Jatarie (9) are the TO leaders. Charli’s two blocks lead the team while Jatarie has the only other block in league play. Seven of the ten players have at least one steal with Joyner (7) and Jada (6) at the top of the group.

The Horns have used the same starting lineup for all three league games: Sug, Destiny, Danni, Olamide and Joyner. Texas relies heavily on their starting backcourt who average 32, 30 and 35 minutes per game. Joyner, at 24.3 mpg, is the only player averaging in the twenty mpg range. The rest, with the exception of Joanne, average between 11.5 (Charli) and 19.3 (Jada).

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.
    Screenshot (77).png

This is going to be tough for Texas. Burkhall’s sub, Scott, has taken seven shots in league play, all three’s. She has hit six. Joyner is likely to be the one guarding her when they are on the floor together. Can’t let Scott open BTA. The Cyclones’ backcourt, especially Carleton and Joens, will have a height advantage. Carleton is one of the best players in the nation who does a lot of things well.

ISU should have problems guarding the Texas posts, especially Joyner. The one thing Joyner can’t do is settle for 3pters. She will need to exert her dominance inside. This seems like the type of game where Charli could be effective as well. Joyner, Charli, Jatarie and Olamide should be able to give ISU fits inside.

How well each team guards the other from BTA will be key. Especially Texas who will be facing the league’s top 3pt shooting team, both from 3pt percentage and total number of three’s made per game. Of course, if Danni and Destiny are hitting their shots, they will be able to match anything ISU can put up from BTA.

    STATS COMPARISON—Big 12 stats only.

Both teams run. But ISU does a bit better job of it than Texas. Texas does better at defending than ISU. Neither has been a slouch in league play. Texas usually gets separation in the second and third quarters while ISU’s big quarter is the second with good separation also in the third and fourth quarters. ISU won’t have to rely on the Hilton Magic on this night.

Both teams primarily use nine players. ISU has more bench players available although they don’t always get in the game. Fatigue should not be an issue for either team.

Game is Saturday at 4 PM. Unfortunately, it seems that the game will only on the Cyclones.tv, a pay site. https://cyclones.com/watch/purchase.aspx#register is where you can purchase a 24 hour pass for $6.95. This is does not automatically renew. One can listen on 105.3 FM.

It’s going to be a tough game playing on the road against a good team.

Good write-up @BabHorn . ISU is probably under-ranked at #20/22. The Horns will have to play their best game to get a win. Lesser ISU teams have beaten better Texas teams in Aimes.

So far Iowa St has a little thing going for them that they haven't had for a while and only a few teams get it each year. A thing called chemistry. They are playing together very well with Carleton leading the way as an all star senior should.

Really nice story about ISU's Madison Wise. Guessing Wise will guard one of Danni or Destiny. She, Carleton and Joens give ISU three 6-0/6-1 all around players that can shoot, handle the ball, pass and defend.

Women's basketball: Despite nerves, Maddie Wise is excelling at, well, everything

My thoughts exactly, but I am biased towards showing every Texas game, regardless of the opponent. As it is, I gotta remember to spring for the $6.95 tomorrow morning. :(

This is where is wish LHN paid to get the Cylcone (or any opponent) feed. LHN is now available on most carriers which means great exposure for both teams. Clearly more Horns would be watching. Can’t win with LHN. Keeps attendance down at home games and can’t cover away games. I’d be happy with a local blackout plan and a road broadcast. But selfishly, it’s easy for me to get to home games.

Cantu's preview showing Jatarie starting in place of Olamide. For those interested. :smile1:
    Women's preview: No. 11 Texas at No. 20 Iowa State | Hookem.com

LHN has nothing to do with the TV coverage of this game. That's on the Big 12 TV partners: ESPN and Fox Sports. Neither elected to pick up this game, thus it's ISU's to show on their 3rd tier network, which is Cyclones.tv whereas Texas' is the LHN.

Sorry you feel that the LHN is a negative factor for sports. But for me, it keeps me connected now that I am no longer able to attend games. Age and location, not the LHN, have kept me from attending games. I seriously doubt that any UT WBB fan would pick watching at home versus attending the live event.

And don't forget the $15 million UT gets every year. That's money in the sports department coffers.

Women's basketball: No. 20 ISU has huge opportunity in hosting No. 11 Texas
    And no TV! :brickwall:
Gonna be an interesting matchup. Inside strength vs 3pt sharpshooters.

Not disagreeing with you. Totally aware of how it works. Just saying I would prefer a local blackout for home games and the ability to pick up feeds for away games that don’t get national or even regional exposure. Wanting something I can’t have is not a new thing for me. My money can only buy me so much. Today’s solution is $6.95 to cyclones.com and an HDMI hookup to my. 65” flatscreen. I’m good

Jody retiring near the same time LHN came along, makes it hard to determine if decline in attendance is related to convenience of living room watch ability, but I suspect it is linked. I would prefer a full FEC to a high LHN earnings. When Baylor comes to town, we actually lose some of our home court fan advantage in my opinion.

Went over to Goggle Chrome. Now I can see the game.
Why do Texas make bounce passes to their Post Player's.That have the height advantage, which always causes a turnover.

Good job by the Horns to close the gap and tie it up at the break. Not bad considering how tough it is to play in Ames. Let's hope for a strong second half!

We're out shooting ISU 46% to 29%. Surprised they're out rebounding us by a couple though. Expect ISU to shoot better and the Horns to pull down more rbs in the second half. Sure would be nice to get a win in Ames, not too sure I thought that was likely considering how well ISU has been playing this season. But we're right there with them.

To me — breathe. Stay calm. Breathe. It’s a game. Massey only gave us a 33% chance in this game. Texas hanging in, giving itself a chance. Sug Sutton is playing great!
