Wife and I saw the San Antonio players at their orientation/weigh in, etc. these guys were studs. Physically looked as good as any players I've seen but even more impressive they were all incredibly polite. We talked to several, seemed like good kids.

    Garrett Gilbert is doing well
Just saw mention of him. Orlando or Atlanta
Need to do some research to learn who he plays for
    20 25 k in Alamo dome
Not bad for a new league

Check out the article in the Chronicle. No more than 5 pass rushers to keep it simple for offense to defend after minimal practice.

Have lived in SA since 1999; aware of SA's boast of "military city, USA", but it's Air Force and Army, no Marines or Sailors.

By my recollection USAF has/had Air Force bases: Kelly, Lackland, Randolph, Brooks,

and Army: Fort Sam, Camp Bullis, Camp Stanley, Martindale Army Air, METC/Fort Sam (medical training).

I'm not aware of any U.S. Navy installation now or ever in SA.

Why the AAF came up with the San Antonio Commanders is beyond me.

The only branches of the service with commander (and lieutenant commander) officer rank are the Navy and Coast Guard, which SA doesn't have any association with. ??? Maybe the league can start a team in Minot. The Minot Lance Corporals.

With regard to the game, I tuned in a bit; seemed to be fairly good quality play. Who knows whether this crowd of 20k or so is inflated with local giveaways to kick off the league, but we've been through alternative leagues before.

    Good luck.

I took it to mean people in command
As in commanding an unit or army or football field.
Never even thought about it being a Navy rank. Good point

It must be difficult to come up with marketable team names. I can see San Diego Fleet , Memphis Express but Salt Lake Stallions? Atlanda Legends ?

Yeah, just that it's common to hear in starting conversations around San Antonio: "Hey, Colonel,... how was the weekend?" or "Good morning, Captain, was your fishing trip fun?", but never "Say, Commander, let's go for a beer after work."

    Just sayin'

Didn't watch the game, heck - didn't even know the league existed, and didn't see the Commander's logo, but weren't Travis and Bowie Commanders?

Maybe thats were the name originates? :idk:

    LC,

Yeah, a bit ashamed to say didn't think of that, however, even though many write ups on the Battle of the Alamo refer to Travis and Bowie as "co-commanders", in Travis' letter penned by him, he refers to his office as "Commandancy of the Alamo", but to himself as "commandant (abbreviated)".

    --- o ----

    "William Barret Travis,

    Lt. Col. comdt."

    --- o ---

Texas Treasures: Travis Letter from the Alamo

Of course that leaves out Colonel Crockett --- Travis, Bowie, and Crockett were all colonels in the Texian Army --- so maybe the team should have been the San Antonio Colonels to bring in Crockett as well.

Whatever --- REMEMBER THE ALAMO! and OU SUCKS!

P.S., it's what makes this BBS fun and educational sometimes, I did some further search, though all over the map on "commander" versus "commandant" (maybe some service-related posters can be the final word on this for us uninitiated --- please help) --- looks like, generally, a commander is the senior officer in charge of a force (of any rank) whereas a commandant is the officer in charge of an installation (again, this is not a hard-cast rule).

This might be in alignment with what we were taught about the history of the Alamo, that Travis was sent over as the commanding officer, but Bowie had earlier been sent over to destroy the cannons there and get the Hell out of Dodge (SA de Valero). Arguments between the two were kind of settled as they agreed to both be colonels and co-commanders and to stay put (Travis needed Bowie's fighters as well as Crockett's). However, back to Travis' letter "To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World" he perhaps slyly indicated HE was the Commandant of the Commandancy of the Alamo, not Bowie, otherwise maybe he should have gotten Bowie to co-write and co-sign the letter pleading for help.

    Regardless, OU STILL SUCKS!!

Many moons ago, a couple of business associates of mine were trying to convince me to move to and manage an office of the company in Macon, Georgia.

One of their benefit pitches to me over a business dinner to discuss was, ..."They've got a minor league ice hockey team there... the Macon Bacon..." , you know, like in Makin' Bacon, what mommy and daddy piggy do to make more bacon.

I politely declined the great opportunity.

Edit: Worse than I thought. After posting above, did the Google Machine thing and found this:

    Macon Whoopee - Wikipedia

My colleagues didn't even get the team name right; apparently it wasn't the Macon Bacon, it was the Macon Whoopee. Damn, if I'd known that I might have.....uh,...no.

P.S., the Macon Bacon are the recently formed summer collegiate baseball team:

Watching Memphis and Birmingham. Pretty good football for opening weekend of a new league. At least I don't have to wait until September to get my football fix.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert went 15 of 25 passing for 227 yards and three total touchdowns (2 passing, 1 receiving) to help lead the Apollos to a dominant 40-6 win over the Atlanta Legends at Spectrum Stadium on the first night of the Alliance of American Football league.

Gilbert’s 26-yard touchdown pass in the first minute of the second quarter to Jalin Marshall not only put Orlando up, 7-3, but it was the first touchdown in AAF history.

AAF has a big advantage imo being the first to get it going
If Ricky's get started after AAF ends maybe. Or maybe merge with AAF.
The XFL not starting until next year might be the loser.

I'm glad to see this. Maybe guys coming out of HS that need to take care of families etc., can go to a minor pro league and make some money instead of taking a scholarship then bolting for the NFL draft after a 3 years. Won't stop it, but might slow it down a bit.

That is a really great point.
And even though the salaries are not NFL level which are bs the money is pretty good.
I wish there was a team in Dallas. I would go.

So would I. Plus, NFL scouts may be checking them out. Might still have the 3 year rule, but in the meantime, they are making a living.

Next game tonight is Salt Lake City Stallions at Arizona Hotshots.

Glad to see this since I'm moving to Arizona in June. I plan to take in a few games. Single game tix are only $20 each or season tix for $75.
