Big 12 + PAC 12? Insane or brilliant?

    Or should we go independent?

I like the idea of two Power 5 conferences playing each other on a permanent basis, but hate the time difference. This looks like a SEC knock off, but with better football teams.

Although this might be better with the Big 10. More prestige. Not in favor of independence. (Can’t believe I just wrote that.)

I don’t believe the Big 12 will last. It’s Texas OU and the dwarfs.

    What say you?

This Big 12/Pac-12 scheduling deal is so impractical, they must try it

Nobody in the PAC12 travels well. While we travel really well, it's better if we are going somewhere enjoyable, which eliminates that entire conference except for schools in LA & SFO. Seattle is ok in early September. OU will travel well to Cali-prune-ya, but no other conference member travels worth a damn.

As far as those wanting to abandon the Big XII - WHY? We are in the catbirds seat. We have to win one game every year to get to the final four, particularly as soon as Bowelsby gets fired and the CCG is axed.

Even if we lose to OU, we be rated highly enough to go back to NOLA, and I assure you that was really fun this year; infinitely more fun than those dreadful trips to Phoenix for the "Donnie Duncan what's in it for me bowl"

Actually, it should be Texas, ou, OSU, Kansas (because of basketball) and Tceh plus USC, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon and U-dub as a ten team conference whose Champion plays ND on CCG Saturday. Playing ND will mean they will never get back to the playoff's for which the entire college football family will be eternally grateful.

Pare it down to two inter-conference OOC games per team. Give each team a little flexibility with scheduling and the chance to play at least one cupcake if they wish. That also means less traveling, and each team gets one home and one away game against the opposing conference.

Do that and you're on to something.

I think the Big XII is just fine. Last year's bowl results are a good indication of that (and that's just football).

Good point on traveling well and NOLA. My concern is even though SEC is an oversized conference with 1 really good team, the 10 dwarfs weigh us down.

I feel we need stronger conference members (I know we’ve discussed, and unless we pull in strong teams it is a dead issue), that being said I see us in the playoff and NOLA (as you mentioned) for the foreseeable future.

Maybe the better match, if any, is with the Big 10. But we are back to travel again.

I like your thinking. Do you think this would work withe the Big 10 or God forbid the SEC?

I think the Power 5 conferences should do something like the NFL does with their schedules.

They basically require the division winners and runner ups to play other division winners and runner ups the next year.

So, in my world, it would look something like this:

    Week 3
    Big XII #1 vs. Big 10 #1
    SEC #1 vs. PAC 12 #1
ACC #1 vs. Highest CFP ranked Power 5 team left.
Then do the same for runner ups except pair up the conferences differently.

The next year do the same thing except pair the conferences differently and if same teams fall within the top two spots then they play away game if they were home team the previous year and vice versa if they were the away team.

I'd like to see us to play a game in California and/or Arizona regularly for recruiting purposes. Don't want to foreclose the opportunity to schedule some top notch 'national' Northern or Southeastern teams for OOC games though.

As pointed out above, the big 12 is not nearly as weak as people like to think. I think our biggest problem is a lack of major markets for TV, and not enough teams.
But the actual football is, overall, average when compared to the other P5 conferences (not to speak of the other sports which compare quite favorably)

I would never want us to join one of these already bloated, watered down, "super" conferences. I think they are bad for college football, and bad for rivalries.

I would also never want to take a city college like Cincinatti or Houston either.

My hope is that there will be a few teams who are disillusioned with the most recent re-alignment and we can poach a couple of teams from some of the bloated P5 conferences (teams that aren't Arkansas, A&M, CU, NU, or MU because f**k those *******. They can wallow in their own filth)

Then the Big 12 would be right up there with no reason to think of its demise. I mean, Bowlesby has to step down at some point.

While I am making wishes, if we picked up a few teams it would make sense to jettison Baylor. SEC can have them.

My first choice would be to build up the Big 12 by going after Arkansas and Nebraska, for starters. Both of those schools have to feel their move to their current conference has not worked out so well for them.

As much as I would hate that, it makes sense. They lost the most, and would have the most to gain by coming back.
There should be a public lye bath for the piggies before they are allowed re-entry, though.
The huskers would also need to perform some public act of contrition.

They should just steal the 2 Arizona schools and call it a day, but it wouldn’t matter anyway once tv deals are done it’s going to be wild. Espn And Fox will have major competition from all these streaming services.

They might have competition, but not the type of competition that induces lower expense to subscribe. The networks and streaming companies will throw up unbelievable amounts of cash to gain access. When that happens you and I have to pay them back.

Main reason At&T is buying up everything in sight. They took directv a few years ago and now time warner. Disney holds espn and and some sections of Fox if I’m not mistaken and they are set to launch a streaming service soon. It’s only a matter of time before we get true ala carte service and I will be thankful for it.

The more I see articles like this one, the more it confirms that we should just be Independent. For just football.

Notre Dame gets every gift in the world and every tool possible to make the CFP, and they take advantage of it. Heck, there was a time long too long ago that Independents were all the rage, and they got away with it until TV contracts started getting too lucrative for geographical conferences. Miami, Penn State, FSU, etc.

The way things are with instant access and the availability of games on the Internet, it doesn't make sense to keep geographical ties to a region that's basically no better than the old SWC. And it REALLY doesn't make sense to be forced to play those SWC-style games in addition to a West Coast swing with a ****** Pac-12. We could literally set our schedule with whoever we want because teams will make room for us. Heck, maybe some of them will go Independent, too.

My pipe dream of abandoning the NCAA and creating a college football promotion/relegation system with a commissioner and NFL-style TV contracts and pay for players gets closer by the year. I'll probably be around like 70 years old when it comes to fruition, though.

I sure hope so because ESPN+ is a joke. I would pay twice that (ie $10/month) if I could get all the current ESPN channels, including LHN. It's pretty much the only reason I am on PSVue and that is costing me $50/month for all those other channels I don't watch.

The Big 12 is only a program or two away from being the best league. The Big 12 is already among the best 1 or 2 in football, basketball, and baseball, along with volleyball and swimming, and golf. Getting there with Track and Tennis. TCU and WVU have brought more to the table in 6-7 years than aggy, nu, cu, and mizzu combined in 14-15 years. Notre Dame would have performed better in the playoffs if they were in the Big 12 or Big 10. Even with one or two losses, they would have made the playoffs in those leagues. I don't believe they will win a championship again until they join a conference. UT going independent wouldn't be a good move.

You are not going to save much once ala carte becomes mainstream. Count on at least $6 for each ala carte channel (with ESPN being in excess of $10). That is going to add up quickly, and you can still only watch one channel at a time on each TV. Add to that the TiVO recorder you will need to purchase to record over the air programs. Good luck recording anything off the ala carte menu.

That is just for the programming. Until Dion can provide each of us with a gig Mbps with 50 upload capability for $10/month, you are going to need at least 25mbps for each device that hooks up to the internet. So with a phone and a TV for each person in the household, you will need at least 50mbps and hope that you do not have too many visitors as their phones will also soak up 25 Mbps each.

The phone companies' propaganda is 5G will take care of all of this - at what price and when who knows.

At 6 dollars a station they shoot themselves in the foot. I have an android box and a jail broken firestick my neighbors kids put me up on that I paid 40 bucks for on eBay and I have access to everything on tv to stream from local stations to live sport events to hbo showtime all the way up to those expensive ppv fights and all I need is internet to make it work. This is the main reason cable tv is dying and rating are falling you can basically watch whatever you want online for nothing extra.

You have to pay for the internet and, unless you have a cable or sat subscription, you have to pay for all of the Fox sports and all ESPN. Also unless you are an Amazon Prime customer you have to pay for most of the programming on the Firestick.
