#21 (AP) Texas (21-8; 11-6) will visit NR TCU (20-8; 10-7) in the last Big 12 game for the two. At stake is a spot in the top four in the league standings and a bye in the conference tournament. Texas is trying to regroup after two straight losses while TCU is on a two game winning streak and looking to make it three in a row. Texas won the first game between the two to run the series record to 42-3 and 9-3 in Big 12 games. Texas has won the last two games, both played in Austin. TCU’s three Big 12 wins over Texas have all been in Fort Worth, including the last time the two teams met in Fort Worth on Jan. 10, 2018.

    TCU Horned Frogs (20-8, 10-7)
TCU has four players averaging double digits in scoring during league play. Those four, Jordan Moore (#22, 6-3 Sr. C; 17.1 ppg), Amy Okonkwo (#00, 6-2 Sr. F; 14.6 ppg), Lauren Heard (#20, 5-9 Soph. G; 10.4 ppg) and Kianna Ray (#25, 6-1 Jr. G; 10.4 ppg), account for 76.5% of TCU’s scoring in league play. Moore (108-190; 56.8%) and Okonkwo (90-207; 43.5%) are the only Horned Frogs making 40% or better from the field. Although Jadye Woods (#15, 6-1 Jr. G; 32-81; 39.5%) and Ray (63-165; 38.2%) come close. Moore and Okonkwo account for 48.8% of made FGs and 40.2% of FGs attempted. TCU has three primary 3pt shooters in Ray (33-101; 32.7%), Okonkwo (37-96; 38.5%) and Heard (14-52; 26.9%). Those three have made 84 of the 101 made 3pters and 249 of the 330 3pters attempted by the Horned Frogs. Moore (74-112; 66.1%) and Heard (63-94; 67.0%) have almost half of TCU’s FTs made and attempted. Okonkwo at 88.9% (32-36) and Yo’Myris (Yummy) Morris (#5, 6-3 Fr. F) at 77.8% (7-9) are the only players over 70% from the FT line. Dakota Vann (#24, 6-0 Sr. G) has the third highest FT% at 68.4% (13-19).

Moore (9.1 rpg), Okonkwo (6.2 rpg) and Heard (4.7 rpg) are the primary rebounders for TCU. Five players average over one apg with Heard (3.6 apg) and Ray (3.0 apg) leading Woods (1.9 apg), Adeola Akomolafe (#33, 6-1 Jr. F; 1.5 apg) and Moore (1.3 apg). Heard (2.7 TOPG), Woods (2.4 TOPG), Moore (2.2 TOPG), Ray (2.2 TOPG) and Oknokwo (2.1 TOPG) top the Horned Frogs in turnovers per game. Six players average at least one steal per game with Heard (2.1 spg), Ray (1.5 spg) and Moore (1.5 spg) leading the way.

Of the 12 players that have seen action this season, eleven have played in Big 12 games. Seven have played in all 17 games with one getting into 16 games. Two of the other three have played in 11 games with the other playing in six Big 12 games. Moore, Heard and Ray have started all 17 league games with Akomolafe having 16 starts. Oknokwo has 13 starts with Woods having five. The starters in the last game were Moore, Ray, Heard, Oknokwo and Akomolafe. All seven players that have played in all 17 games average over 20 mpg. Ray, at 37.1 mpg, and Moore, at 30.5 mpg, are the only players over 30 mpg. Heard with her 29.5 mpg average, is close to joining them. Ryann Payne (#1, 5-6 Fr. G) is the player that rounds out the main eight player rotation having played in 16 games at 7.6 mpg.

    Texas Longhorns (21-8, 11-6)
Texas will be led into the final Big 12 game of the 2018-19 season by Sug (13.9 ppg), Joyner (12.3 ppg) and Danni (11.6 ppg). Jatarie (8.5 ppg) and Destiny (7.9 ppg) are the next two scorers with Charli (5.9 ppg) leading the bench. Five players are hitting between 42% and 49% to lead the Horns in FG%. Sug’s 49.4% tops the quintet while Joyner is second at 46.4%. Joyner has the most FG attempts (85-183) while Sug has made the most FGs (88-178). Danni has already made more 3pters in league play than any Horn did last season (39-90). Her 43.3% from BTA is currently third in league games. Destiny (17-55; 30.9%), Sug (10-32; 31.3%) and Joyner (7-23; 30.4%) are also threats from BTA for the Horns. Only four Horns are making better than 70% from the FT line. Olamide’s 90.9% (10-11) leads the team in FT%. Joyner (32-68; 48.5%) and Sug (50-62; 80.6%) have been the most opportunistic in getting to the FT line. Charli (35-42; 83.3%) and Destiny (31-39; 79.5%) join Olamide and Sug as the best in taking advantage of getting to the FT line.

Texas continues to be one of the best rebounding teams in the league with Joyner (6.8 rpg), Jatarie (5.9 rpg), Sug (5.1 rpg), Danni (4.5 rpg) and Charli (4.3 rpg) hitting the boards. Charli and Olamide (3.8 rpg) provide strong rebounding off the bench. Sug (83 assists) has three times as many assists as either Joyner (27 assists) or Danni (26 assists). Joyner (3.7 TOPG), Sug (3.2 TOPG) and Jatarie (2.0 TOPG) are the top in turnovers per game. Charli (9), Jatarie (7) and Joyner (5) have 21 of the team’s 28 blocks. Joyner leads with 19 steals while Sug and Danni are tied with 16 steals each. Jada adds 15 while Destiny has 11 steals.

All ten active players have seen action in league play. Seven of the ten have played in all 17 games. Nine of them average over 11 minutes per game. Danni (35.4 mpg) and Sug (32.8 mpg) are the leaders in mpg. Sug and Danni have started every Big 12 game while Joyner has 16 starts in 17 games, sitting out of the starting lineup on senior night in favor of Olamide. The group of Sug, Danni, Joyner, Jatarie and Destiny had started the previous 11 games before senior night.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups.
    Screenshot (157).png

Moore (20 pts, 7 rebs) and Oknokwo (18 pts, 6 rebs) combined for 38 of TCU’s 67 points in the last game these two teams played. Joyner had a good game (17 pts, 4 rebs) while Jatarie struggled (7 pts, 1 reb). Charli had a good game off the bench (14 pts, 5 rebs). The one thing our starting posts can’t do is get into early foul trouble like they have the last two games. Although Oknokwo will present problem with her ability to hit from BTA, Joyner’s ability to finish inside will cause TCU problems. The battle between senior posts Jatarie and Moore should be worth watching. Moore is TCU’s primary scorer and post defender. Jatarie is a capable scorer and defender in her own right.

Both our posts and guards will need to play defense out to the FT line with two TCU players averaging 5+ (Oknokwo) and 6+ (Ray) treys per game. Joyner and Charli will likely be the ones shadowing Oknokwo with Olamide also capable of that. Meanwhile, Danni will likely be the main player responsible for defending Ray with help from Jada and Audrey. Destiny has a reputation as a 3pt shooter but has been very effective driving and shooting inside the arc.

Since Feb. 02, 2013, six away games at TCU have ended up in 3 wins and 3 losses for Texas. The average score has been Texas 64.5 to TCU 63.3. Texas shoots better from the field, BTA and the FT line but TCU is better inside the arc, especially in the paint. The effective FG% is razor thin in Texas’ favor: .463 to .462. Texas has an edge in rebounding although TCU outrebounded Texas in the first game by one. TCU is better at forcing turnovers as well as in getting steals and protecting the paint with 78 blocks to Texas’ 28.

TCU will have homecourt advantage but Texas has played well on the road this season. TCU has lost at home only to Baylor and KSU. Texas’ road losses have been to Baylor and KSU.

This should be an interesting game as both teams have a lot riding on the outcome of this game. Texas needs a win or they will take a three game losing streak into the conference tournament while TCU wants to finish strong with a three game winning streak. A possible four tie for third place in the standings will hinge on the results of this game, the BU-WVU game and the KSU-OSU games. A TCU win, a WVU win and a KSU win will leave Texas, WVU, KSU and TCU all with 11-7 records. A TCU win and a KSU win will leave Texas, TCU and KSU at 11-7. A Texas win and an ISU loss to Kansas would leave the Horns and Cyclones tied for second with 12-6 records. A first round bye to Saturday is what all are looking for.

Wow, time goes by fast I remember Texas recruiting Jordan Moore. She’s a nice player our post players will have to play well. This is an important game that could decide how our post season will end up. They have to get some momentum and feel good about them selves before the post season.

If the creeks don't rise I plan to go up to FW and watch this game. Might as well, it's too cold to do anything else of value. I love that old arena up there, especially after they remodeled. There's not a bad seat in the house

    We may have won.
But I was not impress with that win one bit.
    J. Holmes alone had way too may turnovers.
We just don't look like we know what we are doing on Offense.

That was a physical game. Prior to our game, TCU had only lost two games on their home court this season.

We've had more talented teams lose at TCU the last few seasons. This team fought the entire night and played team basketball.

Yes, Holmes seems to go for the "flash" more than she needs to; and, that leads to turnovers. Unfortunately, that won't get corrected this season, IMO.

Very good win on the road against a team whose style is not easy to defend.

Needed win to put an end to our two game losing streak and get some momentum heading to OKC for a rematch against TCU.

Much better second half effort defensively in shutting down Moore and Owonkwo. Stellar job holding Kianna Ray to 1 point.

Need to get more shots for Danni and Destiny.

Rematch against TCU isn't my preference for Saturday night; but, maybe game preparation against the same team will be a benefit.

Jatarie finishes with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 0 turnovers in 20 minutes.

Mide finishes with 0 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 turnover in 6 minutes.

So, yes, by all means, more Mide.

Have to give a shoutout to Jada Underwood; she did a lot of good things tonight and we needed all of it. I'm one of her harshest critics, but very happy she performed well in all areas.

TCU was averaging 69.5 pts/game in conference play. To hold them to 48 tonight is pretty good, IMO. Don't have to score as much if your defense is good.

We are Texas and others are not allowed to be good?

I will take 62 points every game as long as we hold the other team to 48.

TCU had been defending their home court very well this season. This was a solid win.

Not sure why, but we seem to be a team that prefers to travel. Hopefully that works in our favor for the tournament.

Let’s go Horns! Run the B12T

Pondering the helter-skelter nature of our play, not complaining: I zoomed in through binoculars to observe player skills. I saw this, more than once: Texas player (usually someone under basket) grabs rebound, turns and flings the ball down the court - no-look fling, not a targeted, solid pass, often without a grip on the ball, presumably aimed at something orange. Result: Ball bounces around and there's a scramble. Or ball goes to Texas player who streaks downcourt. Or ball goes to opponent and we've lost a possession. I noticed several passes like this, too - some good, some a turnover. Seemed to me that it was bad fundamental basketball - another nanosecond of thought would reduce turnovers. So to those who coach - i assume that you do not tell players to throw the ball downcourt and hope the guard finds it? Not judging - I know I don't realize the speed and strength of the scrum, but this casual ball handling annoys me. BTW, Live in dfw and go to several TCU games each year - happy to see them do well. They seem to have a good vibe around the program, coaches, players and fans. They should be in the NCAAs, but may be pushed out by some of the mid-majors (and us.) :hookem:

Offensively we struggle in the half court. League coaches have realized if they guard Danni tight we struggle even more because we have no movement. Baylor, Iowa St, and TCU barely let her breath. Thus, she forced a few shots or took them when not comfortable. This team has to find a away to get her in more action. She passes the ball well but, more often than not she is parked in the corner with a defender 12"s from her. If she is more involved it will absolutely create shots for others.

From what I remember from practices I have attended (it has been too long since I have gone), the intent to go fast. But, while there is supposed to be a player at a specific spot (or close to it) on outlets, there still has to be a half second to look to make sure you are getting it to a teammate, not an opponent that has anticipated where the ball will go. After all, there is a difference between running a drill with just your teammates and running it with opposing players trying to keep you from completing the pass.

The intent is score quickly when possible, not to lose a scoring opportunity due to carelessness. If the opportunity is there, go. If not, slow it down and run your offense. Fastbreaks off steals, rebounds, all have a pattern that is followed. It's flexible depending on the defense, but the plan is there. When it works, it's a thing of beauty. But the players can't be in such a hurry that they don't know who is around the area they are throwing the ball to. The object of the drill is not to throw the ball helter skelter down the court on a hope and a prayer. Sometimes, the smart play is to slow down rather than forcing the ball where there is no opening. That's why they practice but, sometimes, in the heat of the moment, players forget. And that's when I pull my hair. :smile1:
