EUGENE, OREGON, PORTLAND REGIONAL—GAME ONE: TEXAS vs INDIANA

#23/RV and seven seed Texas will face off with ten seed Indiana, the 2018 WNIT defending champions, in a first round NCAA game in Eugene, Oregon. Texas (23-9) and Indiana (20-12) have met once before, an 86-79 win for the Horns on Dec. 03, 1982 during the Nebraska Invitational. That was the first year that Texas played in the NCAAs instead of the AIAW.

    Indiana Hoosiers (20-12)

    Fan Forum: http://btownbanners.com/forum/45-indiana-womens-basketball/

Like Texas, Indiana has ten active players. Only eight have seen action in at least 29 games. Their tallest players are 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. Their starting rotation is set with Bendu Yeaney (#1, 5-10 Soph. G), Kym Royster (#11, 6-2 Sr. F), Jaelynn Penn (#13, 5-10 Soph. G), Ali Patberg (#14, 5-11 RS Jr. G) and Brenna Wise (#50, 6-0 RS Jr. F) making up that group. Aleksa Gulbe (#10, 6-3 Fr. F), Grace Berger (#34, 6-0 Fr. G) and Linsey Marchese (#12, 6-4 Soph. F) are the primary subs. Also available are Keyanna Warthen (#2, 5-10 Soph. G) and Grace Withrow (#5, 5-6 Sr. G).

Patberg is the top scorer at 16.0 ppg on 157-359 FGs (43.7%). Second is Penn at 13.6 ppg (162-404; 40.1%). Wise is the third player in double digits with her average of 12.3 ppg, making 44.7% of her shots (119-266). Yeaney (9.4 ppg) is the Hoosiers’ fourth top scorer, making 116 of 304 FGs (38.2%). Marchese has the top FG% of 58.1% on 18 of 31. Royster is second at 57.7% (82-142). Penn is the top 3pt shooter with 50 of 154 treys (32.5%) while Wise (49-115; 42.6%) and Patberg (41-98; 41.8%) make up the rest of the trio of 3pt shooters for Indiana. Gulbe stretches the floor with her 38.7% from BTA (12-31). The Hoosiers have only four players making at least 70% of their FTs. But those have accounted for over half of the team’s FTs attempted: Patberg (109-136; 80.1%), Penn (61-82; 74.4%), Wise (105-115; 91.3%) and Gulbe (41-48; 85.4%).

The Hoosiers have four strong rebounders, led by Wise’s 7 rpg. Royster (5.9 rpg), Patberg (5.0 rpg) and Yeaney (4.2 rpg) complement Wise on the boards. Patberg’s 4.7 apg almost double Yeaney’s 2.5 apg, which is second in assists. Patberg (3.2 TOPG), Penn (2.8 TOPG) and Yeaney (2.6 TOPG) top Indiana in turnovers. Indiana averages 3.0 bpg. Gulbe (0.8 bpg) and Yeaney (0.7 bpg) are the best shot blockers. Yeaney (1.5 spg), Wise (1.3 spg) and Patberg (1.1 spg) are the best at swiping the ball from opponents.

With a short rotation of eight primary players, Indiana has four of its starters averaging over 30 minutes per game. Patberg is the leader at 35.4 mpg. Wise is second at 33.1 mpg while Yeaney (32.5 mpg) and Penn (30.1 mpg) complete the quartet. Fifth starter Royster puts in an average of 20.7 mpg with Berger also at 20.3 mpg. Gulbe (17.5 mpg) and Marchese (10.9 mpg) complete the primary rotation.

    Texas Longhorns (23-9)
For the season, the Horns have four players averaging double digits in scoring: Sug (12.8 ppg), Joyner (11.8 ppg), Danni (11.0 ppg) and Jatarie (10.3 ppg) with Destiny clocking in at 8.3 ppg. Jatarie at 51.3% is the only Horn hitting at least 50% from the floor. Sug (161-337; 47.8%) and Danni (122-317; 38.5%) are the top shooters for Texas. All five of the leading scorers are averaging at least seven shots a game. Danni (65-169; 38.5%) and Destiny (35-109; 32.1%) are the most prolific 3pt shooters on the team. Except for Jada, who has hit one of two 3pters, everyone else is making less than 30% from BTA. That does have to be taken with a bit of salt as six players hit over 30% from BTA in conference play with Danni hitting a sizzling 41.9%. The top five scorers for Texas all average between 2 and 2.8 free throws per game. Charli has the best FT% at 80.9% while five others are making at least 70% of their FTs.

The top three rebounders are Joyner (6.5 rpg), Jatarie (6.2 rpg) and Sug (5.3 rpg). Danni has been solid at 4.6 rpg while Charli has come on strong during conference play to average 4.1 rpg for the year. Sug’s 172 assists are 121 more than Danni’s 51, which put Danni second in assists. Both Joyner and Destiny average just over one assist per game. Joyner leads with 3.5 TOPG with Sug second at 3.3 TOPG. Texas averages just 2.6 bpg but the Horns don’t get blocked much either as opponents only average 2.5 bpg against them. Charli leads a group of five players with double digit blocks with her 19 blocks for the season. Sug has 42 steals to lead the team while four others have between 23 and 28 steals.

Danni (33.4 mpg) and Sug (32.0 mpg) spend the most time on the court. Seven of the others average over 13 mpg. Danni and Sug have started all 32 games with Joyner and Jatarie being the most likely to also start. Destiny and Jada have split starts at the fifth position.

    LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups
    upload_2019-3-20_14-1-23.png

Sound familiar? Texas will have a height advantage inside. Indiana can match up height wise with players at 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4 but the Hoosiers start Royster (6-2) and Wise (6-0) at the forward spots. Gulbe (6-3 F) and Marchese (6-4 C) both come off the bench. Wise will present a familiar problem for Texas’ posts: a forward capable of hitting the trey to the tune of 42.6%. She is one of two Hoosiers that have taken at least 100 treys. Joyner will be challenged to guard on the perimeter. Of course, conversely, Wise will have to handle Joyner in the paint, not an easy task.

Patberg, Penn and Wise have combined to take 367 of Indiana’s 477 3pt attempts. Patberg (41.8%) and Wise (42.6%) are the most accurate while Penn averages five attempts a game from BTA. Texas has its own sharpshooter in Danni (38.5%) who averages just over five 3pt attempts a game.

Okay, so Audrey started the last game and not Jada. But Jada sat out that game due to an injury and should be ready to go. I will pick Jada to start based on her experience and her recent ability to score as well as being a better defensive matchup.

Indiana seems to favor man to man in the few clips I have seen. There’s not much separating the two. Texas does have a slight edge in efficiency FG% and a stronger inside game. Texas will be facing a stretch four quite capable of hitting the three while also having to worry about a couple of guards that shoot well from BTA. Covering the arc will be critical for the Horns’ perimeter players as well for whichever post is covering Wise and Gulbe. Texas will need to take advantage inside as well as drive and dish, preferably to either Danni or Destiny in the corners. The ability of Texas to get and convert offensive boards will be critical to their success.

This should be a close game but Texas’ ability to score inside should lead the way to a Texas win.

Game time will be Friday, 6 PM on ESPN2. Hopefully, the game will be played in its entirety here in Texas and not placed on the wraparound menu. Especially with UConn playing its first game at the same time.

EUGENE, OREGON, PORTLAND REGIONAL—GAME TWO: OREGON vs PORTLAND STATE

#7/7 Oregon and NR/NR Portland State have met 37 times since the first meeting on Feb. 11, 1974 when Oregon pulled out a 39-38 win in Portland. The two will meet once again on Friday, this time for a chance to advance to the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Oregon leads the series 27-10, having won the last four games. The last game between the two resulted in a 90-46 Oregon win, once again in Portland, on Dec. 17, 2016.

    Oregon Ducks (29-4)
    Oregon website: Women's Basketball
Fan Forum: Basketball Forum | ScoopDuck

The top five scorers for the Oregon Ducks account for 75.2 ppg of the 86.1 ppg the Ducks average. Sabrina Ionescu (#20, 5-11 Jr. G) tallies 19.6 ppg to lead the quintet. Satou Sabally (#0, 6-4 Soph. F) scores at a 16.4 ppg clip. Ruthy Hebard (#24, 6-4 Jr. F), still trying to fully recover from a knee injury, is pouring in 16.3 ppg. Erin Boley (#21, 6-2 RS Soph. F) is the last double digit scorer at 13.0 ppg. Fifth starter Maite Cazorla (#5, 5-10 Sr. G) is just off double digits with her average of 9.9 ppg. The Ducks shoot an outstanding 50.7% from the field. Hebard (217-318; 68.2%), Oti Gildon (#32, 6-1 Sr. F; 63-104; 60.6%), Lydia Giomi (#14, 6-6 Soph. F; 23-38; 60.5%), Sabally (196-387; 50.6%) and Cazorla (117-232; 50.4%) give the Ducks five players making over half their FGs. Ionescu is the primary shooter with 230 makes on 523 attempts (44.0%). All four of the Ducks that have taken over 100 treys are making over 40% from BTA. Boley leads the way with 97 of 214 (45.3%). Two thirds of her shots come from BTA. Next up is Ionescu (77-182; 42.3%). Sabally is third in 3pters attempted (68-162; 42.0%). Cazorla is the last of the quartet with a not too shabby 40.2% from BTA (52-128). Oregon is 15th nationally in FT% at 77.0% and tops in the PAC 12. Five players top the 80% mark with a sixth over 75%. Three Ducks have reached triple digits in FTs attempted: Hebard (89-134; 66.4%), Ionescu (111-126; 88.1%) and Sabally (80-105; 76.2%).

The Ducks have three strong rebounders in Hebard (8.9 rpg), Ionescu (7.5 rpg) and Sabally (5.9 rpg). Providing capable support on the boards are Boley (3.7 rpg) and Gildon (3.5 rpg). Ionescu (8.1 apg) and Cazorla (4.5 apg) are the leading distributing with Sabally third at 2.0 apg. Ionescu’s 2.5 TOPG are tops on the squad with Sabally’s 1.9 TOPG second. The team’s 10 TOPG tops the nation in fewest TOPG. Seven of the nine players have registered at least 17 steals with Sabally (49) and Ionescu (46) at the top of the list.

Taylor Chavez’s (#3, 5-10 Fr. G) foot injury will reduce the Ducks’ roster to eight players if she is unable to play this weekend. She is a vital part of the rotation, especially since she normally is the first guard off the bench to give Ionescu and Cazorla some rest. Without her, the normal seven player rotation shrinks to six, even though two others are available to play: Giomi and Morgan Yaeger (#2, 5-9 RS Soph. G). Oregon has started the same four for 33 games: Ionescu, Sabally, Boley and Cazorla. Hebard has started 31 games but missed one due to a knee injury and came off the bench the next game. Gildon started the two games that Hebard did not. Those six, along with Chavez, make up the seven that see the most action. Ionescu (35.6 mpg) and Cazorla (32.7 mpg) don’t come out very often but not having Chavez puts Yeager as the backup to provide relief for them. The Ducks do have a five player post rotation so they are not hurting as much with Hebard’s injury limiting her minutes.

Kelly Graves provides injury update on Taylor Chavez
    Portland State Vikings (25-7)
Portland State website: March Madness in Eugene
Fan Forum: Portland State Women's Basketball - Portland State Vikings

The Portland State Vikings will bring four double digit scorers to their game with Oregon. Leading the way is Sidney Rielly (#2, 6-0 RS Sr. G) at 14.4 ppg. Second in scoring is Ashley Bolston (#0, 6-2 RS Sr. G) with an average of 12.4 ppg. Kylie Jimenez (#23, 5-6 Soph. G) is third with 11.7 ppg. Fourth is Courtney West (#10, 6-4 RS Sr. F) with an average of 10.5 ppg. The top scorer off the bench is Desirae Hansen (#53, 6-0 Fr. G) who contributes 7.8 ppg. West (138-248; 55.6%) and Savannah Dhaliwal (#5, 6-0 Fr. F; 39-76; 51.3%) have the top two FG%s on the team with Jordan Stotler (#11, 6-4 Jr. F) third at 49.4% (84-170). Rielly (164-363; 45.2%), Jimenez (136-351; 38.7%) and Bolston (119-310; 38.4%) are the primary shooters in a guard oriented offense. The Vikings have four 3pt threats. Three are the starting guards: Rielly (57-144; 39.6%), Bolston (20-66; 30.3%) and Jimenez (57-168; 33.9%) while Hansen is 34 of 86 (39.5%) from BTA coming off the bench. Bolston is the only Viking to have reached triple digits in FT attempts (138-169; 81.7%) although Rielly should reach that mark against Oregon as she currently is at 76 of 97 (78.4%). Those two are part of nine Portland State players making at least 70% from the FT line with a tenth at 69%. The team FT% of 79.1% is third nationally.

Portland State has three solid rebounders in West (7.4 rpg), Stotler (6.7 rpg) and Bolston (5.2 rpg). The Vikings have two outstanding distributors in Jimenez (4.8 apg) and Bolston (4.7 apg). Bolston (3.0 TOPG), Rielly (2.3 TOPG) and Jimenez (2.1 TOPG) top the squad in turnovers. Portland State has two good shotblockers in West (85 blocks) and Stotler (45 blocks). West is seventh nationally in total blocked shots and fifth in blocked shots per game (2.83 bpg). Jimenez (2.6 spg) and Bolston (2.5 spg) are among the nation’s best in swiping away the ball.

Stotler, Bolston, Rielly, Jimenez and Hansen have seen action in all 32 games for Portland State with at least 30 starts each. West has started 29 of the 30 games she has played in. Pia Jurhar (#4, 6-3 Sr. F) and Ana Tainta (#20, 5-8 Fr. G) have played in 29 and 28, respectively, averaging double digit minutes per game. Those eight form the core rotation for the Vikings with Dhaliwal averaging 9.9 minutes per game in 22 games. Also available are Labrea Denson (#1, 5-3 Soph. G) and Andrea Martinez (#21, 6-2 Fr. F). The quartet of Jimenez (35.7 mpg), Bolston (33.0 mpg), Rielly (28.0 mpg) and West (27.4 mpg) are the most likely to remain on the court.
    upload_2019-3-20_22-31-41.png

This should be interesting, at least initially. Portland State has the size to matchup with Oregon inside. The question is if they can matchup athletically. Boley, Hebard and Sabally have been too much to handle for most teams in the PAC 12. Can the Vikings match or better them? Certainly, West gives Portland State a shot blocker that unlike any that Oregon has. And it’s an experienced frontcourt while Hebard is the only upperclassman starting in the Ducks’ frontcourt. Still, one would expect the Ducks to find a way to handle the Vikings’ frontcourt.

Likewise, Portland State will have difficulty in corralling Ionescu and Cazorla. Ionescu, the nation’s third leading assist leader, both by total number of assists and by per game average, will be very difficult to stop. Add another player averaging 4.5 apg and it’s going to be hard to stop those assists from finding their mark. But the Vikings’ Rielly and Jimenez will keep the Oregon backcourt scrambling to stop their three point shooting.

It should a fairly easy win for Oregon. Per Wiki, no 15 seed has ever won over a two seed in the women’s tournament. The last four times these two teams met, the average margin of victory has been 37.3 points in Oregon’s favor. But to give Portland State a bit of hope, one of those wins was 63-56 thriller and the Vikings did upset the Ducks seven years ago in double overtime, 87-85. So it’s possible for Portland State to pull off the upset, just not likely.

Game is scheduled for 8 PM but will probably be closer to 8:30 if the game between Texas and Indiana does not go to overtime. It will be carried on ESPN2 but will be subject to whiparound coverage in Texas.

Don't know how well this will hold up but the Spectrum tv guide has whiparound coverage on ESPN2 at 6 PM. That should show our gave vs Indiana here in Texas and in Indiana. But Spectrum also lists each of the four individual games on four separate channels on their ESPN College channels. The Texas vs Indiana game is listed on 395-ESPN College 4.

Gotta have the ESPN sports package to watch those. The game will also be on ESPN3 (WatchESPN).

Pretty general statement. You could say the same thing about Danni and Destiny. And Texas really can't put multiple defenders on Patberg because you can't leave neither Penn nor Wise open. Unless you are talking about using different players on Patberg. Texas does rotate defenders, using different defenders on a player they want to shut down. Don't forget that Patberg is also going to be busy guarding either Sug or Danni. She won't have time to rest on defense.

Iowa really struggled with Mercer despite Gustafson going for 30/16. Think they are too dependent on one player to win it all. But a top seed struggling is good for the game; we need more parity.
