Interesting point. He'll likely either make a political calculation, or more likely shoot from the hip if buttman is the opponent. Let's face it, Trump is well known for tagging his opposition with insulting nicknames (Lyin Ted, Little Marco, Crooked Hillary, etc.). He's also anything but politically correct. His fan base will eat it up.

What we have here is a difference of historical interpretation as to Reagan's motives. That's ok. You posit that Reagan got tricked by the Democrats, I'm more inclined to think it was part of lowering labor expenses for the benefit of businesses large and small, and to bring down unions (chamber of commerce type stuff).

A third possibility is something Reagan alluded to in the above-copied tv debate with GHW Bush. In the context of the Cold War, there was real concern that Mexico might become another Cuba. Therefore we needed to relieve a lot of their surplus unemployed (Reagan mentioned some 40% or so unemployment rate in Mexico) else risk a Castro-style leftist revolution next door.

I wouldn't dismiss this third possibility out of hand, as so much of what we did in the Cold War (from underwriting the defense of Europe to supporting Apartheid South Africa) was done for the overarching goal of preventing communist/socialist expansion.

[On edit] - I re-posted the Reagan vs. GHW Bush 1980 debate below. GHW Bush displays the "compassionate conservative", while Reagan apparently steps back and views immigration through a Cold War lens. Reagan seems to be saying that we needed to let in many, many more immigrants from Mexico to relieve their massive excess unemployment--40-50%--lest we find ourselves with a very hostile and strange (i.e. leftist, Marxist, Castro-like) neighbor next door. Reagan even references Castro's Cuba in this answer/speech. If you take Reagan at face value here, the Cold War trumped all other considerations regarding immigration.

All of the Trump nicknames of which I am aware steer clear of racial slurs. He made some borderline sexist comments about Carly Fiorina. Most of Trumps slurs involve the character of the opponent. Attacks against Fiorina and Rubio would be the exceptions. I would be surprised if he attacks Buttigieg based on his sexual orientation. I think many on the right would be turned off by that. I don't think the base would be fired up by that type of slur.

Perhaps you forget how incredibly pumped up his fan base was over his description of the third world as **** hole countries and about Megan Kelly 'bleeding', and his characterization of Mexican immigrants as a bunch of rapists, etc ('but I'm sure there are some good people'). It would be a very very contorted stretch to not characterize such comments as racist and sexist in nature. Trump simply doesn't care about politically correct concerns at all.

Maybe we'll see a kinder gentler Trump who cleans it up, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Anti-gay cuts both ways. Many will dislike it, but Trump's core fan base will eat it up. (Think religious right and rednecks--both tend to be strongly anti gay).

Or did she mean to say other candidates 'just stroke me the wrong way...'. :smile1: (It can only go downhill from here...).

    Here is what Trump said
"They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting. And it only makes common sense. It only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people.

It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably— probably— from the Middle East. But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast."

I wonder how many illegals have been arrested for rape/sexual assault in past year alone? And that is here in our country>
It was reported last year that about 60% are raped on their journey here with social workers in Mexico giving girls as young as 10 birth control pills.

But let's keep on pretending Trump speaking the truth makes him a racist.

Trump has been very right on the illegal immigrants.

He has said summarily that they are a drain on our country. They are. They were a drain on Mexico and Central America too. That is why they have supported their immigration to the USA. Now that is a sad statement for any person, but it is true. People who need charity go to areas with more resources. But more resources doesn't mean infinite resources. We should think about how we can help people within our means. But that is each individuals decision. The government doesn't have a right to make that decision for us and burden us with their decision. The US government has been good at that for a very long time. They are group A. They decide that group B (middle class) MUST take care of group C. It is tyranny. We should put up a better fight.

And what part of his description of ******** countries being shitholes was incorrect?

I guess you have missed the whole issue of violence that has been perpetrated by illegal immigrants, both from MS-13 and non-MS-13 members. Actual citizens have been subjected to real harm (and death) by those individuals...citizens who SHOULD still be alive and breathing in an unharmed manner had the Border Patrol been able to effectively do their jobs and had local governments not engaged in sanctuary city crap.

And no, I don't believe DJT is going to do anything down the road using anti-gay rhetoric. He is smart enough to know that there are enough gays and lesbians who support him and his office.

A lot of people, like me, voted for Trump precisely because he would call a ******** a ********. Now, unlike me, a lot of those same people are so offended by the very thing they wanted to hear: non-PC truth.

Apparently CNN hosted a 5-hour long Democratic Town Hall Meeting last night. Who knew? Nobody except other media watch that network.

Some of the highlights that made the radio:

Bernie says the Boston Bomber SHOULD be allowed to vote because once you start taking the vote away, even for a mass murderer, you START DOWN a slippery slope.

Kamala says 16-year olds should vote. Yikes, if they do to politics what they've done to the movie industry (all top grossing movies are now comic book based), Kim Kardashian or Miley Cyrus will be President.

Kamala also wants to go after gun dealers because they're obviously the root of our mass shooting proliferation.

Fauxcahontas wants 1.25 trillion to cancel college loans and provide free college for eerrbody.

Buttigieg is the only one who sounds like he's got good sense. No wonder he's climbing up the polls.

    Gonna be fun.

Peculiar that you have no retorts for the rest of my reply.

I guess it was easier for you to take a slam at the reality that THIS lesbian and many other gay and lesbian voters enjoy an office-holder that wants to IMPROVE the United States of America instead of spending it into a toilet-swirling oblivion...

So, if Buttigieg gets elected President, will his partner, Chasten Glezman, become First Lady? Asking for a friend.

There are a whole lot of people (and I am not necessarily including Chop among them) who completely buy in to the fallacy that members of certain groups will vote in a monolithic fashion. I don't look at a black man and immediately assume he's a democrat voting social justice warrior, but a lot of people do. I don't look at a well to do white man and immediately assume he's a country club republican, but a lot of people do. I don't make similar assumptions about LGBT folks (if I even know they are LGBT) either.

When I was growing up, doing things like that was called prejudice and (if race-based) racism. I'm not sure why people don't still see it that way now.

He won't, but if he's smart he will never use the guy's name, because I guarantee someone is going to say "Notice how he puts the subtle emphasis here and here... he's clearly dog-whistling to his homophobe base."

She's up against a 50-year political veteran with a colossal network or supporters all over the US. That isn't easy to overcome. However, she's intersectional, and that goes a long way in a primary, as Obama proved in 2008. She's also resourceful. She leveraged Willie Brown's schlong into a Senate seat, so there's no telling what tricks she has up her sleeve.
