Seems to me the politics of CFB disallows a P5 big time coach from running this type of offense. If you get behind a spread team and can’t catch up, you’ll be doomed the rest of that season because your on tape not being able to come back. It just puts too much pressure on the defense. Good spread teams put up 28-40 on everybody. When Bama had their best defenses they could have won with the wishbone but I doubt they would have won but 1 MNC instead of 5 under Saban. It’s just not feasible to run that offense anymore. You can win but not every game. Eventually you have to pass and spread the field. Be fun to see the wishbone as a part of a spread teams offense. Texas could run that if we recruited a true fullback. I won’t hold my breath. We could have played our TE last year at fullback....on occasion. Won’t happen..... Dang off-season.
You can't run the wishbone well if you don't devote large amounts of practice time to it. The timing of handoffs, etc are not trivial. If you don't have the threat of multiple plays out of the same formation a defense knows what's coming due to your alignment, so you have to install a lot of plays, not just one or two off tackle runs and an option pitch. And if you devote large hunks of practice time to the wishbone, you're taking away from time that could be devoted to the spread, or any other offense you are running. Add to that the differences in skill sets demanded of your personnel and there is really very little hope of blending the bone with any other modern day offense.
Yep. Better installing some option options out of the normal sets or a wildcat formation. We do this some, but not a lot.
I just always liked the wishbone. I miss it. I know it ain't coming back. I used to watch a few Air Force games every once in a while. They ran the triple option but not really the wishbone. Ken Hatfield is the last coach I can remember that ran mostly the wishbone. He was a dinosaur in the coaching world.
Ken Hatfield was/is a worthless piece of ****, who coached the dirtiest SWC team to ever come to Memorial Stadium. This is something I said to his face, and then reiterated when I asked Coach Broyles in a one on one conversation and a five page letter to fire his sorry ***.
Slick made it through all of his games once he started. Mildren and Watts played most or all of their games. However, in today's game, the injury rate might be higher due to bigger and faster DL and LB's (50/50 one-on-one with DB's).
It was common knowledge back in 68-69 that his nickname was Slick...not everyone called him that tho.
