There were a couple of motorheads in our HS that souped up old VW bugs. They also each ran a custom exhaust with a tailpipe that stuck up high in the air (4-5 feet high) in the back. Those super-bugs could really move. At least the older bugs came with air-cooled engines. The Germans did things differently.

It was way too much engine. Scary fast 720 h.p. and handled like hell which is a bad combination. Had to buy 110 octane from the racing store to gas up. Would like to get a 327 now as an everyday driver.
