So there was a 'Basketball Analyst Coordinator' position posted to UT's and several other job sites over a month ago but no hire has been announced and it is no longer listed on the UT jobs site. Yesterday a 'Video Coordinator' position was posted - the position currently held by Kelby Jones. Jones evidently played a big part in recruiting Celeste Taylor and, based on his social media, hasn't let up when it comes to future classes. If I had to guess, Jones will be promoted to the Basketball Analyst Coordinator and we'll see a young fresh face take over as video coordinator - a position often used by recent college players looking to get into coaching, e.g. - Nneka and Celina.

It seems my guess about Kelby Jones being promoted was correct. Even though there has been no announcement, his job title on the roster page is now Basketball Analyst Coordinator rather than Video Coordinator.

2019-20 Women's Basketball Roster - University of Texas Athletics

Edit: The video coordinator post has been closed so I expect we'll see a new addition to the staff shortly once the coaching staff returns to campus after being on the road recruiting all weekend.

While the 'Staff' page has not been updated to reflect his new title, Kelby's Bio page has:
"Kelby Jones enters his fourth season as a member of the Texas women’s basketball staff and first as the program’s basketball analyst coordinator.

Jones’ responsibilities will focus on assisting with basketball philosophy development, game preparation and scouting, skill development and special-situation offensive study. He will also participate in on-campus recruiting and film study
    . "

I like the visit to Louisville to work camps and get exposure to a coach known for doing some creative things on the offensive end:

"Jones has gained additional experience working summer basketball camps at Texas, Louisville and North Texas."

Just spitballing but, considering the ties to current coaches (Carey) as well as former players (Atkins), I wonder if the coaching staff has reached out to Washington Mystics head coach Mike Thibault for advice and insight on new offensive ideas. Thibault currently has some great offensive weapons in Delle Donne and Tolliver but he foresaw the current shift to 'position-less' basketball seasons ago and tailored his roster to optimize his offense. The Mystics have been creative and lead the WNBA in scoring but haven't lost focus on defense. Might not be a bad idea to send a member of the staff to observe and learn at some point during the summer or preseason.

I’m hoping Coach Aston would send someone even herself to watch and learn from someone like Thibault. I went back and watched some Oregon games the last couple of days and their offense is very similar to Coach Aston but a more efficient 4 out ball screen offense. I just hope that Coach Aston can implement some things offensively that will allow them to be more efficient.

I agree, but let's be honest. The 4-out, ball-screen offense only works if you have shooters who can shoot, know what I'm sayin'?

Here’s the base Offense that Oregon runs. Simple and not complicated but very effective.

Nice video and I think it shows a big contrast between the Oregon offense and UT offense. Oregon runs what I call an outside/in offense. They only have 2 players on the side of the floor where the ball is with no one in the paint. Once a player gets past their defender its harder for the defense to rotate over without leaving someone open.
From what I've seen Texas has always run an inside/out offense and the priority seems to be getting the ball into a post player. A lot of times Texas has 3 people on the same side of the floor as the ball with at least 2 of the players in or close to the paint. Makes it easier for the defense to cover for each other.

The other thing I think I've noticed about Oregon's offense is that their post players do not normally handle the basketball. It seems like a lot of Texas offense starts or goes through one of the post players who are on the perimeter. This may account why on average the post players lead the Texas team in turnovers.

I think the difference with 3 people on the same side of the floor as the ball in Texas that you don’t see with Oregon is when their guard throws the ball to the wing their guard cuts to the opposite side of the floor as were with Texas the guard goes to the same side of the floor as the ball when they throw the ball to the wing creating more traffic.

Oregon also has a very good post player in Ruthy Hebard that is primarily a low post player and they do throw her the ball in the post regularly. But I also think Oregon having only 2 players on the same side of the floor as the ball also helps her in terms of it being a lot more easier to make the post entry pass and also allowing her to see where the double team is coming from a lot better.

Certainly doesn’t hurt that their other starting ‘big’, 6-4 Satou Sabally, hit over 40% from 3 on 197 attempts.

Absolutely which creates more space because a lot of the times she or someone with the same skill level spends a lot of time on the perimeter as that stretch 4 as opposed to being in the paint with the 5 player.

Here's some good Offense from UConn against zone. Texas obviously has issues at times against zone.

Sure do. A 'classic' method to bust a zone D is solid outside shooting (with quick releases/quick shots after receiving the pass and/or outside screens to get the good outside shooters open). Wish we'd see more of that against zones ...

We need improved ball movement against a zone to get those shooters open. Swinging the ball is much more effective... we do way too much dribbling against the zone at times.

Here’s Louisville and Coach Waltz Offensive package against zone. I’m not very smart but if I were a wbb Coach and I wasn’t good in these particular areas I would be going and learning from these coaches or just going to YouTube.

You expect our coaches to learn from other successful coaches? No way, they already know everything.

I know you’re being sarcastic but the coaches need to improve and get better just like they demand from the players.

I will give the staff credit for stepping up their social media game. Hope it translates to some commitments now, particularly Andrews and Ware.

I don't know how many Graduate Assistant spots are available for WBB but I get the feeling that if a spot is open, Danni Williams may be on the 40 Acres a bit longer. She was a grad transfer so she spent the last year working on a graduate degree but despite exhausting her eligibility she is staying involved with the WBB program. While the coaching staff was on the road last week recruiting there was another team camp held by the program and Danni was specifically mentioned by a few attendees. She was also included in a "players and staff" tweet yesterday from the Texas WBB account.

Another possibility? The new video coordinator still hasn't been announced/listed on the texassports site. Either way, I was impressed this past season by Danni's intensity and passion for the game so keeping her around the program is very positive (IMO).

Danni is in the top left photo.
