I assume this is going to be a big recruiting weekend so, added bonus, any recruits attending will get to see a WBB player honored at the biggest home FB game of the year.
Had to wait to find the right AD who didn't default to the "This is the way it's always been" excuse. Hip-hip-hooray!
Cat Osterman has been hounded by fans asking when her jersey retirement will happen. Based on the reply below, I’m guessing there will be 1 of these a year and probably in the following order: Clarissa Davis, Edwina Brown, then Cat.
Kamie's #33 will be the first jersey retired for any female student-athlete in UT history. Football has retired 6, baseball 6 and MBB 3.
Wow that's a travesty... So unfair to the greatness that our women's athletics teams have seen throughout the years.
A number of years ago, I wrote AD Plonsky and asked her why women's sports did not retire jersey numbers. She wrote back and told me that women had decided a long time ago that the Hall of Honor awards were enough. She invited me to attend the Hall of Honors induction, but I did not get the invitation. I wrote back saying, all I ask is the men and women's sports be treated equally. I did not get a response. Long time overdue. I do not know who gets the credit for this, but congrats. They need to give us the same chance to honor Kamie at a WBB game.
Understand where you are coming from but celebrating it during a huge event like the LSU game has several positives: Kamie can attend. Big recruiting weekend. Possibly get mentioned during the national broadcast of what should be the most watched game of the week. You'd think there would be some small ceremony at a WBB game when they raise/unveil her jersey/banner but it would be quite difficult to have Kamie in attendance. The closest game Washington State has to Austin once the season gets underway is Boulder, CO (I think).
There is a little overlap on the fanbase but getting tickets to this game or not being tempted to sell them if you have them will prevent many WBB fans from not being in attendance. Just want a chance for the faithful fans to get a chance to appreciate a milestone in gender equity.
Yup, I did the same thing (writing Plonsky). It's interesting because she was one of two AD's dedicated just to women's sports in the NCAA. But, you knew she wasn't "allowed" to consider this option because her "real boss" the men's AD wouldn't consider it. Funny how having a new AD with a different philosophy suddenly makes this possible.
3rd Longhorn to have her jersey retired along with Kamie and Clarissa. Who would be next? I assume it’s probably going to be a volleyball player.
