Is CJ off to a slow start because defenses are keying on him? Is he in the dog house with coaches and not getting the looks?

Duvernay is off to an incredible start and I didn't follow spring and fall practice closely but Eagles sure has busted onto the scene.

I think he is getting matched with the opponent’s best defender.

Duvernay, Eagles, Smith, Johnson. What a lineup!

Agree that the opposition’s best is lining up against Johnson—and often getting help over the top. Maybe he’s hurt, I don’t know. When Duvernay is wide open short, and Johnson is covered loosely deep, the odds are played and the short throw to Duvernay is usually made.

Also a QB will sometimes develop a connection with a WR where the QB just knows where the WR is and will be, even on a busted play or scramble. Think McCoy-Shipley or Gardere-Walker. Sam clearly does not have that connection with Johnson. He might be developing it with Eagles, we’ll see.

Johnson isn't doing as good a job as he was last year at using his body to shield defenders from the spot.

there is a lot to that. I believe he has seen what has happened to LJH and feels he needs to make stuff happen. Both Sam and Collin just need to relax and play the game in front of them.

I am going to highlight my low IQ that another poster has said I have and suggest that if Ehlinger could put more under his passes, CJ and others would not have to come back to the ball and give the defender an equal shot at the ball.

If it's any consolation horninchicago, I disagree with you on a lot of things, here and on west mall, but I don't doubt that you are intelligent.

    What's wrong with CJ?

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that LSU usually put triple coverage on him last night. While not man up, there were three assigned to be "around him".

I wonder how differently things might have finished for Texas against LSU if Lil Jordan Humphrey had stuck around.

All game long I thought the same. LJ somehow made the lack of a running game not as noticeable. The back seven (or however many) had to account for him and then some at all times. We really miss him. Can't replace a guy like that.

One might not, but between Eagles, Johnson, Duvernay and Smith they should be able to get that job done.

For the most part, they did. We put up 400+ passing yards and 38 points, after all.

I have some issues with calling so many long bombs though (although many of them, our guy had a half to a full step, and the pass was off target). Once we started remember that medium routes were allowed, we moved the ball with ease for the most part. The whole "fail by throwing only deep balls and behind-the-LOS passes, succeed with medium routes" deal has been happening every year since Buechele's freshman year, for some reason, despite the coaching changes.

Texas coaches, no matter whom, seem to be afflicted with promptly moving away from what is working.

Do what works until it doesn't.

No one in that bunch can make up for his loss though, even collectively. He can drag multiple defenders with him downfield. You've seen it. As good as Duv has been, he doesn't bring that to the table. Not even close. LJ was a game changer and the reason we built that lead on ou. He was a man among boys. Their secondary was intimidated by the guy.

The back seven had to adjust just for LJ. It helped the running game some, and freed up other wideouts. No one we have now is filling that role, singularly or as a group

LJ was fun to watch, and I really hoped would stay. Considering the fact that he wasn’t drafted and pro scouts advised him to stay, why did he leave? Money? I can understand that, I guess.

Every time he was targeted it was CJ running a straight line. Finally in the 4th he ran a comback route. It's not hard to cover a guy if he runs the same route all night long.

If Texas wants to get CJ the ball more, they need to find ways of freeing him up like they do for Duv. Eagles had slightly more creative routes than CJ did.

We have a lot to work on offensively and defensively.

I just watched my recording and he had single coverage all night. Nothing close to 3 "around him" either.

and that is what happened. There was a free receiver on every play. At first it was the TE/LB who were running away from the assigned LB. Sam finally hit Eagles and they had to adjust which left Duv the open guy. Sam had issues all game (more in the first half) seeing his receivers.

I think what we may be seeing is how valuable that slot receiver is in Beck's system - at least in terms of how comfortable Ellingher is with it. Not to take away from LJ or Duverney, but I wonder whether a Sam is just really comfortable hitting that receiver in a scheme where the slot just isn't as well accounted for as the outside receivers.

It makes sense really the way we play. We've always emphasized getting big fast receivers on the outside by the boundaries. That's going to open things up for a guy in the slot, right?

Every fan says that about Texas coaches? :D

Let me rephrase. They kept trying what wasn't working.

I remember Mackovic drove me nuts like that. There was a drive at the end of the game against Baylor (if I remember right) where we got the ball in the final minutes, and Ricky just hammered them right down the field. They couldn't stop him. And we get down to about the 35 and he calls three straight deep balls for incompletions, we miss a long field goal and lose the game.

My theory is that some OCs just get bored calling the same thing, even if it's working.

Having said that, I think part of what you're talking about is stubbornness. They had the matchups on the outside and they believed they could hit them. Sam misses a throw, or they make a great play, and the response is "OK, do it twice in a row!" Maybe that's arrogance, maybe it's bad calls, but if it works we're all talking about how great it was that we didn't just quit on it when it didn't work the first time. And as it happened, as the game went on we started getting pass interference calls as we started to wear on them. And we did make some plays downfield, which was encouraging.

The Texas Game Day crew said afterwards that Texas is not built for the deep ball and should have tried it much less, basically.

Herman said they came to win the game. Part of the justification of the 2 4th and goal calls. If you come to win, then do what works, not the opposite.

I got a lot of things in my head I wish I could erase. Wish it were that simple. I wake up in cold sweats some nights thrashing around saying "No!! Not Rice! I WON'T get used to it!!"
