Yes. Attended the game as an impressionable youth. Never really recovered. Played football for Plano East ... the legend haunted us

I think I recall us once debating whether Justin Blalock played guard or tackle in high school. lol. That was that you, right?
We got to find more interesting things to debate

No that was me - I also attended Plano East but I can't remember if Blalock was in my same class or the one right after me. Nonetheless, played fball with him when we were younger and we were also in band together. He was a really good dude.

I want to congratulate the Oregon Nike Ducks in advance for winning the National Championship starting in 2023 for 10 years in a row.

Even if all states legislate the same law Nike will just out bid everybody for all the 5 star players. College Football will never be the same.

I was also part of this discussion. I knew Justin better in elementary and middle school. I stayed in band, he stayed in football, after that we had different groups of friends. At a large school like Plano East, that means you don't see much of each other.

In any case, we were both in the gifted/talented programs in elementary and middle school. Smart guy who would've gotten at least a partial scholarship to UT without football. Also a great guy in terms of character. All the good fortune couldn't have happened to someone more deserving.

In high school, he was listed at right guard, but spent time playing every OL position but center. Usually he simply lined up opposite the opposing team's best DL. As you might imagine, he also played on special teams units, and even DL in goal line situations.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the concept of endorsement deals for college players. A few questions:

    1. Will the proceeds be split with the school if the player is posing for a photo in his school jersey. In other words, if Sketchers takes a photo or video of Sam wearing Sketchers shoes in street clothes, the $ should all go to Sam. But if Gatorade takes a photo or video of Sam in his uniform drinking Gatorade, it seems that some portion of what is being promoted and capitalized on is Texas football, not just Sam as an individual. In such case, a split between Sam and UT is appropriate.

    2. Can the athletes get paid for advertising beer? Cigarettes? Legal vapes? Condoms? (the USC Trojans have a built in market there) Rifles or shotguns? Junk food? Political ads?

Two OUTSTANDING points, Chop. Completely agree on the former. On the latter, it will be interesting to see if political correctness limits available opportunities. If so, what would be acceptable endorsements? Vegan restaurants? Electric cars? Plan B One Step (can't discriminate against female athletes)?

These, especially #1, are excellent questions. Football players didn't stitch the jersey themselves, design the logo, pick a longhorn as the mascot, invent the Hook 'Em sign, decide on the color orange, and so on. They're one piece of the puzzle. How much goes to which parties?
Prior to now, that money would go to UT and/or the athletic department, then come back to the players in the form of scholarships. Some of it might've gone to band, cheer, pom, and so on.

Some businesses might want a photo with the cheerleaders. In California's scenario, shouldn't the cheerleaders get paid as individuals? And have some money go to the cheer team as an organization? And some go to UT as a whole, and possibly some to the athletic department? How much should go to each party?

We could let the universities decide for themselves how to divy it up, and that might play into recruiting:
School A: "We give you a 30% cut, School B gives only 25%."
School B: "25% of the deals you'll get here still comes to more than 30% of what you'll get at School A."

Interesting points on the latter. If a women's basketball player advertises the "morning after" pill, I think we all know she will be met with resistance at some institutions. For instance, what if a star Baylor, Notre Dame, or BYU woman athlete advertised the "morning after" pill...?

That is precisely why there are not endorsements now because of the institutions associated with the individual Scholastic athletes.

One big cluster **** coming to a campus near you. Outlaw all Cali schools NCAA. I dare you to be so bold. But I can assure you that is all that will save our beloved sport. It won’t and things will never be the same, damn Cali.

What kind of resentment will be brewing the locker rooms? How will Saban handle things when Tua signs a big endorsement deal knowing the RT who protects Tua's blind side won't be getting one? Or what will Coach K do when only 1 or 2 of his 5-star recruits get big endorsement deals?

That’s when all the local car dealerships, insurance agencies, hotels, and alumni owned businesses all of the sudden start doing tv ads with football players who are grossly overcompensated for their appearance in the ads. We’ll be seeing an awful lot of college athletes in tv ads, billboards, etc ...

So a college athlete, especially a high-profile player who is likely to attract more endorsements, will now need an agent or some kind of professional representation to negotiate deals and optimize these opportunities (if they’re being smart about it). Can they do that? I don’t see how you can deny them professional services in the pursuit of maximizing their earning potential.

What % of the high profile sports high profile players will get endorsements?
Will Nike Under Armour etc cut back on what they give schools? Will it affect the non revenue sports?

I wonder if they'll make the players with endorsements put that money aside in order to be eligible for the season. I'm ignorant of the facts....did Ricky and Cedric have to put their minor league baseball $ in limbo until after they left college? Same with that Colorado kick returner who also skied?

Give the players a choice - a scholarship or endorsement money and make them pay their own way.

I can’t remember what Ricky did, but I believe Cedric wasn’t on Scholarship because he did get paid for Baseball. The good news was he didn’t take up a scholarship spot.

What I wonder is, did someone whisper in Bru McCoy's ear that this was a possibility?

Well, there was this in 1984:

"Here’s the original press release that a small California company called Apple released back in January 1984, announcing the launch of their new PC — the first mass-market personal computer featuring both a graphical user interface and a mouse."

Of course, the integrated circuit, which made the computer age possible, was invented in Texas at TI.

"Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments patented the principle of integration, created the first prototype ICs and commercialized them."
