I mostly agree with that. I would like to see some more runs with pulling guards and tackles like the Redskins use to run. I think our o-line is good enough for that now, but especially in the coming seasons when we have bone crushing monsters on the line.

We pull our guards a lot already. How much more do you think we should do it?

I tend not to agree with this perspective. While the scheme and play-calling may not be perfect, from what I have seen so far, Ingram is a good back with flashes of potential, but not a game changer and not a back that defenses have to prepare for. That could change and I hope it does. But to me he lacks vision, often patience, and he hasn’t been able to break that last tackle. After all, in 18 games at Texas (or perhaps a few less), what’s his longest run? My guess is about 25 yards. To me it’s hard to pin that on the O-Line or scheme.

By contrast, unheralded and low rated D’Onta Foreman ran behind a weak line, and he tore it up. Not a fair comparison? Perhaps. But again, what is Ingram’s longest run and what’s his career (at Texas) yards per carry? And think about this. Ingram benefits considerably by having a QB that is a threat to run. So defenses cannot afford to focus solely on him.

Ingram showed growth last weekend and if he continues to do so, perhaps defenses will begin to pay attention. But to blame his lack of production or explosiveness on the scheme or OL seems misplaced to me.

How many different run plays have you seen us run not counting Sam's running...? Don't count the bounces when the hole is plugged up either.
How many stretch plays, sweeps, power sweeps, quick pitches, jet sweeps, counters, leads, etc , etc ? .....All you see is 12 dive with a few twists in blocking..THAT is about all you see.

Honestly guys, we are doing great this year, both running the ball and passing. Could we be better, always, but we are doing great. No team is great at everything we are averaging 41 pts a game, the last time our offense was this good was 08.

Our biggest weakness isn't our corners, it's our pass rush. I don't see how it is going to get better this year. We have guys that are great at stopping the run, but getting to the QB is a huge challenge for them. If you want to see great improvement from our corners, improve the pass rush. I had no idea how much we would miss Omenihu.

Well...defense was much improved for the OSU game. Here's hoping they continue to improve. I agree with many the 4 man front improves the pass rush and helps take pressure off the back end of the defense. Once J Whit comes back this offense will be rolling big time and if we keep playing the 4 man front I think that side of the ball improves as well. We'll see, injuries will be the difference this year. It has been rough for the first 4 games on that front.

Agree^^. Had we not gifted them big yards & the ball on muffed punts and penalties we win by at least 2 TD's.

Something tells me Ingram will be a late bloomer, and we have just begun to see his potential.
People love to remember players gone by as they ended up, and few remember how they started. I think if we look back on some of our beloveds, we would be surprised at the process/patience it took to get them there. I'm not saying he will be grreat... just saying sometimes real good ones even take awhile to shine. Biggest potential threat to Ingram's ceiling in CFB may be JWhitt.

Ricky ran for 990 as a freshman at fullback.
From the first couple of weeks (Hawaii and Pitt) you knew he was special.
Obviously Keontay doesn’t have that break away speed, but I agree he is showing potential, and improving.
Career 4,000 yards? I’d take the over.
Just put the Sugar Bowl tape on. He is a major factor in that offense as a true freshman.

I agree with the late bloomer thought regarding Keontay. He may not be a burner like Jamaal Charles but he seems to have that smoke through a key hole slipperyness that Charles had. I also see a little Cedric in him with the way he pushes the pile. More of that this year not last year. He is much more physical this year. I think the extra weight he carries has really helped. If he stays healthy he will have a much better year than last year and break 1,000 yards. If that happens then he should really be able to soar the next few years. J Whit and Bijan may take some of his carries, who knows. Its a good problem to have.

Also good to have quality competition to keep Ingram hungry for playing time (Whittington, Roschon). Get complacent and another guy will gladly take your spot.

I also really like the counter tray. We run a number of variations of the counter tray where we pull linemen from the non play side, fake to the non play side, and counter to the play side behind the pulling linemen. Sometimes it’s Sam doing the run. You would never see Joe Theisman running on a counter trey :lmao:, but we definitely have been running a number of knockoffs of that old Redskins play, and mostly with success.

From what I’ve seen, Jr Angilau has a real knack for pulling and blowing people up on the opposite edge. He’s one bamf on the field. And he’s just a RS Freshman.

Any sort of counter action can be effective against fast and aggressive defenses that lack discipline (or against dumb LBs) It also helps when our OL is superior to their DL.

Let’s hope you’re right. But if true it would be the exception. Now, I’m not down on Ingram. Simply, I had expected more based on the hype. He may surprise me

I’ve said this before but from what I can recall going back to the 60s, virtually every great RB at Texas immediately — in the first few carries — showed flashes of brilliance. That was true of Chris Gilbert, Earl, Ricky, Jamal, Cedric and D’Onta. It was not true of others like Gray and Brown, both of whom were very highly touted.

I didn’t really see the initial splash with Ingram but perhaps he will be a late bloomer as Rain suggested. And look, he is already more than a serviceable back. To me he’s performing at a B to B+ level based on the OSU game.

A word of caution regarding JWhit. I’m inclined to wait and see him do it on the field at the collegiate level before ordaining him the next great RB at Texas.

Priest Holmes was a late bloomer. He had an excellent Senior year and a phenomenal bowl game performance to top it off.

True. Make the QB rush his throws and the DBs look a bunch better. Give a good QB time to pick the defense apart from the pocket and the DBs look awful. There is definitely a correlation between pass rush and DB performance.

I agree with you in general and was thinking this^^^as I posted.
I do want to see the next GREAT Texas back, but those are few and far between...here or anywhere. I'm looking for just above average to real good right now...and I think we've seen a few of those turn out after slower starts.
I do agree with you, generally, on the "great backs" part.
On JWhitt...I do believe he looks special.

I'd have to disagree with you and take the under.

Not so much that he isn't good enough, but if he's on track for 4000yds after year 3, I doubt we see him for year 4.

Maybe the early draft declarers of late that we’re not benefited by leaving early will help the young guys at Texas now see the truth.

Keaontay included. I’m no expert on what makes millennials tick. Besides likes, texts and tweets.

Malcolm Brown. Selvin Young. That’s Ingram. We won a NC starting Selvin.

The Ricky Williams’ of the world don’t show up very often, anywhere.

Selvin, that’s who I’d been trying to think of and I think he is a very good comparison. Selvin may have been a tad faster but same style/type of runner.

Selvin was more solid at the end and made it with the Broncos? I think....Ingram is too jukie and gets tackled for losses that aren't necessary. RJ proved that today.

I have said this before and I'll say this again. Duvernay would make a great running back no doubt he would be our best running back by far. In fact he could do that and Jake could play his slot position and we would be a better team. But it's a little late for that and we all love Duvernay' s play as a receiver...just sayin.

I'm guessing that was installed so OU has to think about it. Something else to have to prepare for. Imagine what happens when as a defense you now have to anticipate a lineman also being a receiver. I dont think I've ever seen anything like this before, but I promise if a linebacker now has to "cover" or keep an eye on Cosmi on a few plays that could distract him enough to open up a lot of things across the middle.

Duvernay would be a great RB but he’s to valuable at slot receiver to move him. J Whit comes back next week I believe. I feel for Keontay. I believe he is over thinking on his runs. RJ will go north south and get what the defense gives him while Keontay tries to juke his way to a crease for a big gain. He needs to turn off his mind and just react. I saw a few runs where he hesitated and let the hole close up for no gain. Frustrating. He’s going to lose his starting job if he doesn’t change that real quick. I bet he’ll get 3-5 carries in the first half of OU to see if he implements his training before they move on to another back.
