Pathetic and embarrassing "effort" today. This is 100% where the game was lost. As much praise as Herb Hand has received, he got taken to school today.
Side note, though the defensive effort was valiant, waaaaaaaaay too many missed tackles.

I think the defensive scheme beat our line more than anything. IMO our game plan was a knife at a gun fight. O line coaches can adjust to a point but can't overtake blitzes when no one is open (or the qb didn't find an open wr). I can think of two sacks where our OL didn't pick up the right guys, the others I don't believe that was the case

Beck gets an F for today. He played right into the Sooners' hands with his game plan.

Exactly. No doubt we need work picking up the stunts—especially the basic DE/DT loop around. Shack also got owned more than a few times. But when Sam repeatedly has 5 seconds plus to throw and gets sacked, that’s on the WRs (or Sam himself). Throw it away when necessary.

I haven't been sold on the OL pretty much all year because of always needing to convert 3rd and long, but today definitely confirmed it.

Our rotation is soft and we rely far too much on Cosmi and Braun to just "fill" the left side and hope that the rotation on the right side keeps guys fresh enough to make the occasional play. What a wasteful strategy. Everybody misses assignments, including mister ACC all-conference, and against a mediocre D like OU's it shouldn't be happening. I'm sure Hand did some things to make the OL tougher or at least more competent than they were with Wickline and Chuck Strong, but we still just don't have it together at that position.

It doesn't help that our defensive scheme from Orlando makes opponents' OL look great. When we're comparing the trenches live, it makes our OL seem evern worse.

I'll have to rewatch, but 5 seconds, really? BTW, I'm not just talking about poor pass pro, also piss poor run blocking.

The run blocking needs much work no doubt. As does the scheme. Quick hitters to Roschon had some success.

5 games in and still needs work. Not good. Pass blocking was lousy too giving up 9 sacks.

Nobody’s going to mistake us for Wisconsin after this game. But don’t forget where our OL has been the past 10 years. I wouldn’t get too down on this unit, which has largely been a team strength thus far this season.

Yes OU whipped us at the LOS. THEY were the more physical team today. Which is surprising to me. We need to recruit a lot more linemen on OL AND DL!

It started at the point of attack. Their nose tackle dominated shack. Everything else broke down from there.

I agree and it was surprising. Given that Cosmi and Foster were apparently yapping during the week, one has to wonder if Herman had his players in the right mindset going into the game.

Did Foster return to the game after he was injured after yapping about how Hurts would pay for not sliding?

I never knew the context of what was asked on why he made those comments and so I didn't think it was bad to say. Ironic though that he goes out with injury.

It's strange how our line kept having issues with the loop and stunts. We had issues with it against WVU the week before as well.

On several occasions I saw the middle of the field open when we had the ball yet on the pass play none of our receivers made a hard cut to the middle. He would have been open by two steps and running. Sam held the ball too long cause receivers weren't getting open so I say we need a new qb/receivers coach (a passing coordinator) teaching timing and route running and throwing a receiver open. With better timing throws Sam doesn't get sacked as often. Sam made the oline look bad today but we do need work picking up stunts.

I noticed on one occasion (there was probably more) that our right guard instead of defending his gap would double on the dt (probably out of obligation) and then a defender loop around and blow thru the empty gap and make a sack

This board is turning into a circular firing squad. Please don’t go all Tex Ags now! Sam had an off day I believe his rib injury is a bigger problem than the general public knows. It makes his long throws short, probably makes him hold the ball and not run as well. He threw for 211 against WV and 210 against OU. He’s not running well either. The poor guy is playing hurt and imho he is at 60%-80%. The offense runs through Sam. As he goes we go. Maybe, perhaps they could play Casey Thompson against KS. I’m no Dr or Coach but I think our offense will keep sputtering until we get Sam close to 90%.

    2016: Patrick Hudson 4-Star 6.0 rating
    Jean Delance 4-Star 5.8 rating
    Denzel Okaor 4-Star 5.8 rating
    J.P. Urquidez 4-Star 5.8 rating
    Zach Shackelford 3-Star 5.6 rating
    Tope Imade 3-Star 5.5 rating
    2017: Derek Kerkstetter 3-Star 5.7 rating
    Samuel Cosmi 3-Star 5.6 rating
    2018: Junior Angilau 4-Star 5.9 rating
    Mikey Grandy 4-Star 5.8 rating
    Reese Moore 3-Star 5.7 rating
    Rafiti Ghirmai 3-Star 5.7 rating

These are Rivals ratings for our recruits that signed. I can't tell you how many games each of these guys have played but this list doesn't strike me as one that dominates football games. I'm sure I see posts on this board how our recruiting is top 10 and we should compete with everyone in the nation every game but this list doesn't support that. I guess if I had a "complete" post I'd know how many games/starts each of these guys have made but if I'm recognizing 3-Star names more than the others then I'd say we're not getting the "best of the best".

I wouldn’t focus too much on the Star ratings. After all, the best two OLs we have had over the past few years have been Conner Williams, a three star now starting for the Cowboys, and Sam Cosmi, also a three star that will likely be starting for an NFL team...but hopefully not before at least 2021. Kerstetter, also a 3, may be doing so as well.

Star ratings for the O-Line have not been good predictors of future success. And frankly, I believe that our issues yesterday had little to do with the talent on the O-Line. It had more to do with poor play-calling, the inability to in-game adjust, and the fact that OUs D brain trust out-coached us.

I get some of the general frustration, but if all you go by is these star ratings, then Urquidez would be better than Cosmi (and Conner Williams), and we shouldn’t pursue Andrej Keric.

Other important factors: skilled evaluation of HS players outside Rivals and 247, player development on the field, and S&C work—important for all players but especially for linemen. Also, some good fortune avoiding the injury bug helps.

Disagree to a point. We lost primarily due to lack of tackling and secondarily to inability of OL to pick up rush.

If you believe in the infallibility of recruiting rankings, your point might be reasonable. I don't.

I understand. I didn't bring into effect the 2019 class because that wouldn't be a good comparison. Just saying that this oline gave up 9 sacks, and it's not because we got Walker Little, etc.

More like 3.5 to 4 seconds, excellent blocking. Plenty of time to find a receiver. If everyone is covered, peel out of the pocket, or dump the ball.
Run blocking was not good. Ingram was hit behind the line almost every time he touched the ball. Run scheme is predictable, without deception; no sweeps, not getting our speed to the edge, no two back sets, etc.

There is plenty to criticize about the offense in addition to the blocking itself.
Considering the pressure Sam was under all day, I thought his play was adequate.

I tend to agree^^^. But Dayum, I'm really hoping we get some 5 star O linemen soon. Like Tommy Brockermeyer, for example. I remember when we lost 5* Jake Mathews to atm a few years ago. He was really good, and would have helped our line a lot. Just sayin...

9 sacks. Teams don't win giving up 9 sacks. I thought the O was worse than the D. I knew they were going to score. If you'd offered me 34 before kickoff, I'd of taken that and felt pretty good about our chances. After we went ofer on the 1st 4 possessions, I knew we were in big trouble. I was in shock. Couldn't believe we just couldn't move the ball down the field.

Last time I looked, Hand was OL coach and Run Game coordinator. Second half did not see any adjustments. Zach was getting owned by the NT with no help available.

And he got no help in the second half. Do we not have any 12 personnel plays?

I think that speaks a little more to play selection than line play. The terrible thing about the OL play was there were no adjustments for the second half. That is a coaching problem.

So did the OC. First, the horizontal plays were ill conceived against a fast defense. Running them 6 times as well as the Duvernay same play in the backfield from the previous week was stupid.

Returning in the second half and running them again repeatedly and expecting a different result was beyond moronic.
