I think Todd got so much interest for HC positions in the last two offseasons that he kind of fell into the Gene Chizik trap. When Gene was flying around the country and meeting with big money guys during our 2006 season, our D fell flat when it mattered the most. We got on a roll with Colt and Mack figured we would just keep outscoring everyone. They got pushed around by KSU when Colt was hurt, and then couldn't stop Toombs at home.

I think Orlando started to believe that he wouldn't need to change anything for 2019 because he's had so many looks from AD's and was tolerably good last season. He's wrong and has no way to fix it because of depth and not being able to start over halfway through the season.

Also had the night to sleep on it and have some thoughts....

Gotta say, for winning the game this felt more like a loss. I doubt any Texas fans on this board or elsewhere would have expected Kansas to score almost 50 points or that we'd need a game winning field goal as time expired to escape with a win. Our problems on defense had me thinking we'd need to score 50 to beat OU last weekend but it now appears we might have to score that much to beat anyone.

I'm concerned. After what I saw last night, I believe there's one or more losses waiting for us in our remaining games with TCU, KSU, ISU, Baylor, and Tech. Reaching the Big 12 CCG may not happen and with the way we're playing it might just save us some embarrassment if we don't make it. We've given up big yards each of the last two games and the book on how to beat Texas is out and all of our opponents are studying it. I did not expect this season to look like this.

The injuries on defense are a big deal. They are. However, we've got bad scheme to go along with them and that's a double whammy we just can't carry. I feel like Todd Orlando had a good first year but after that our opponents have adjusted and found the cracks. Regarding his future as DC I'm certainly starting to have my doubts...some of which began last year. We're going to give up some points; I mean we all know this and I haven't seen anyone here or elsewhere expecting shutouts. However, our current level of play isn't going to cut it any more and the staff including Todd Orlando knows this.

Personally, I'd be behind making a change at the end of this season but could make an equal counter that Orlando deserves next year and healed up roster to make a case for himself. Barring a string of egregious defensive disasters to round out this season (and it could happen) I believe he'll be back in 2020 as our DC.

Ok, so you have injuries. We all get that. Then at least give the guys a chance and mix in some cover 2 and keep everything in front of you and tighten it up in the RZ. That's just smart football. Asking guys that haven't played to win man situations EVERY STINKING PLAY is just stupid or stubborn. You pick, but it's not winning football. I've never coached a down of football, but you don't need to be a genius. Part of being smart is taking what's right in front of you. Like the 25 yds on a kick off. Same ****. Just take the smart plays and quit trying to be a hero on every play. Applies to coaches and players. TH has got to get these guys to quit pressing and just play football and use their heads.

    Wad.
Since it was on LHN I cannot watch a replay hence this question: was their two point play against man defense? I hope not cause I do not believe I have ever seen anyone that open on a two pointer. That defender will have a uncomfortable film session.

I hate to agree with you, but you are correct. the question is who would we lose as recruits by firing Orlando?

Beaty and Ash are two very very good DCs and would be fantastic in replacement. As much as I now see change may be needed, the fact is middle of the season change sets a bad tone for the coaches and makes it harder to attract new coaches. We better be sure we have an improvement in place before we make a move.

I would be more apt to re-assigning him as an analyst and promoting one of our two analyst as the intrum-DC

No-go here either. If your provider (mine is Cox) doesn’t carry the LHN you cannot access it, except for a 10 minute preview.

Additionally, even if your provider does carry it, accessing “away from home” is blocked. My daughter has the LHN via Spectrum I’m San Antonio and although I can stream some of the Spectrum content, the LHN is blocked...

I don't have LHN either but I've never missed a game they've broadcast. Feel free to PM me and I'll tell you how to go about it.

I'll answer I guess, while you all figure out your cable subscriptions.

Yes, it was man with Foster playing the high cover spot on that side of the field. Overshown ****** up on his assignment and followed the underneath guy despite the fact that 2 other guys were in position to stop the outside WR.

I think this is more of an offseason thread topic, but the way we keep moving everyone around position-wise is reminiscent of what Mackovic and McWilliams used to do with every ATH they ever recruited. I think Overshown has been toyed with by the defensive coaches to see where he fits (he should be playing backup LB probably). I don't remember that being such a big deal with Mack, but this is the kind of **** that happens when a young player has to "figure out" their position that they never played in HS and then has to juggle 3 balls in the air at once.

Well, the good news is that we triple-teamed the slot receiver, so “he” wasn’t going to beat us.

That's a pretty sharp insight. I hadn't considered it before, but yeah, Jason Burleson and others come to mind now that you brought it up.

    Do I like Orlando? No

Was I unhappy with the hire? No

Do I think he is doing even an adequate job? No

Have I continuously questioned why Aranda didn't take the job? Yes

It is the same this year as last, four weeks in the spring, four in August, eight weeks into the season and Kansas is at the line o scrimmage on our end of the field, while Orlando has yet to signal in the defense & our players are standing around not knowing where to line up. Acceptable? NO!

Kansas pass plays where our DBs still don't know where they should be.

All that said, we as fans, BMDs, CdC should never be able to dictate who the head coach's assistants are and are not. Been there, done that and the results got Fred Akers fired. Before Greg Davis was hired, I warned Belmont. Did I criticize Greg? More loudly and frequently than any season ticket holder, yet I held firm that we shouldn't dictate who Mack wanted.

Firing Orlando mid season is a horrible idea, which sends a bad message through the coaching community, and could alienate half the team. I am a proponent of "out placement", but only if we can hire a top three DC, which seems unlikely.

Who do you get? Greg Robinson? People on this board act like he is the end all, be all, when in reality he ain't top 25.

Beatty? I like the guy, but he wasn't exactly setting the world on fire in Brazos County.

    Bud Foster? What a turd.

Where can we "demote" Orlando upstairs to?

Who worth a **** replaces him?

In the meantime, the Brewer family sits in West Travis County waiting for Charlie to break all Baylor's passing records in a couple of weeks.

    I said
similar last week after OU. Why aren't the best DCs wanting to go to Austin and be a part of this? And if they do, why hasn't one of them been hired?

I think he needs to show improvement this year to keep his job. Best coaches find ways to get the most out of what they have. Well, this is what we have and does anyone feel he's getting the best out of them? Really, anyone? Sure we're not goin to be as good with these injuries, but we can do better. It's his time to make us better. Dude, go earn your pay check. Gotta see improvement this week.

HIC, we don’t know that they aren’t interested, but until quite recently, the subject wasn’t really on the table. Now, because of what we’ve observed this season, I’m confident that there will be a number of viable candidates, very interested.

When Charlie was here we all speculated that top OC candidates would not be interested in being under the microscope at Texas, boarding a sinking ship. That’s not the case now. Herman has this program on the rise, and on the fringe of the national conversation. If a good (perhaps young) DC were to come in and help close the deal, his stock would soar.

No doubt any coach building the Texas defense back into the status that existed under Mike Campbell, Leon Fuller, and Mike Parker would see his status take a meteoric rise. That said, I take exception to the "number of viable candidates" as there are very few (maybe 2-3) out there who may or may not be interested.

Again, every potential candidate is going to ask why Aranda didn't take it.

Baton Rouge vs Austin (he doesn't live in The Country Club)

While I know nothing about the Aranda situation, I find it very difficult to believe that a top DC wouldn’t want to come to Texas, a program on the rise, a very powerful brand, a great city, and a program not afraid to pay top dollar to get what they want. The only issue I can imagine — and it could be an issue — would be dealing with the ego of the HC. But that comes with the territory.

Don’t laugh but, what about Jerry Gray? I wonder what the Vikings are paying him to be their secondary coach...

Jerry Gray may be the most football smart Texas player I've ever had the privilege of watching a televised game with. Is he angry over the fact that Mack wouldn't talk to him solely because alums wanted him as DC?

SH, I thought that he was the DC designate for MB — for a few days, until his buddy Mike Munchak, just (at the time) hired as the HC of the Titans brought Gray in as their DC...? That incident was not very pleasant, and very poorly handled by Gray.

    But,

Time heals all wounds...? And the timing for Gray could be ideal. It seems to me that he has hit a ceiling in the NFL.
