Sadly, I am stuck at home tonight. I am grateful to have the Longhorn Network. I hope I can learn a few things tonight about the team even though it is only an exhibition.

I do not recall if anyone mentioned much about Lubbock Christian on the other thread. In addition to being the 2019 Division II champion, LCU has made a habit in recent years of knocking off Division I opponents or at least keeping things close. Last year, the Lady Chaps beat SMU and lost to New Mexico 55-62. This year, the Lady Chaps also play at Baylor (this Wed) and at Mississippi St. (Nov. 4). I was thinking this is not a great game to be playing without a point guard and possibly without Holmes(?) and Warren (?). But then I remembered the Horns have Higgs and Collier to play around. That is a lot of talent. Horns just need to keep their heads and should be fine. Good opportunity for Allen-Taylor to run the point in a game situation. Good time for Collier to begin to practice being the force she needs to be this year and beyond! If the Horns do not get the services of Ashlee Hannan this year, things are going to be interesting. Jada, obviously, will have to play big. What about Routt? She is listed as a guard/forward. Will she gut it up and provide inside help?

Based on where their players are from (6 players from Canyon, Nazareth, Lubbock), I’d bet their style of play is very similar to most of the really good girls HS teams from West Texas - not a lot of height but good fundamentals, lot of passing and movement, not much iso action.

    Thoughts from at the half:
    • The offense seems to have a plan and not seem flustered if being guarded tight
    • Who stole our team and replaced them with 3-point savants?
    • If you squint and imagine, you might think the ghost of "the Bun" is back - but she (Celeste) isn't taking that many shots
    • I see some hustle on rebounds, but I also see Jada about to foul out!
    • IF LCU are supposed to be a 3-point shooting team, I think we're doing good in defending the 3?
    • 8 players? Sheesh.

End of the first half. I'm depressed.

Racer, you sound a bit more upbeat than I feel.

After one half of play I am very encouraged by what I saw, especially on the offensive end. Allen-Taylor (wow). It appears we are going to push the ball more. We had very few turnovers. This team is athletic! Gonna be a fun team to watch when everyone suits up. We gave up too many easy baskets down low; however I think that will be fixed when it’s Joyner down low instead of Shea. Charlie still has a tendency to get unnecessary fouls. We gotta clean that up.
Overall, good stuff so far, LCU is no cupcake team.

Interesting how Karen cranked up the defense in the 4th quarter. I'm thinking she didn't play this fierce defense the first 3 because of the likelihood of having more players foul out.

    Isabel Palmer - promising
    Celeste Taylor - surprisingly quiet
Lashann - playing quick, but not lightening quick as before. An ACL and a big leg brace will do that to ya.

Had a case of the dead legs in our shot the second half. Curious what the plus/minus with Charlie on the floor was. We are an entirely different team defensively with her out there. Glad we went back to fundamentals in free throws and lack of turnovers. Baby steps but encouraging.

I 4got about this game. I caught the 4th qtr. What the world? Up by 4. SMH. I realize Joyner and Sug were on the bench but we were getting out coached. Good thing we pulled it out but BU will beat them by 30 or more.

Hopefully when Sug the Capitan of this ship returns we will look much better.

Celeste looked mad after the game. Hopefully just pressing since it’s her first game.

Had a rough shooting game, 2 of 12 I think. Missed some shots that I’ve seen her make regularly. Plus I’d guess they’re all pretty tired after playing with only 8 plus Charli and Jada missing so much time because of foul issues.

So you watched 10 minutes of the game and decided we were getting out coached. Haha. Generic Texas fan statement.

Yep coaching. Love TX and Love WCBB. We were down by 4 in the 4th qtr to a division 2 team. I call it like I see it.

I was never able to get any stats and still can’t. Seems Texas went from a system that works to a new one that does not. Hope that gets fixed soon. Presumably final stats will show up at some point.

We never trailed in the game and that Division 2 team won a natty last year. If your gonna call it like you see, at least see the full game first. Of course if your already crying about coaching in game 1 of an exhibition game your mind has been made up a long time ago.

Your call is consistent with someone who failed to watch the game

The main coaching mistake was letting Jada get 4 fouls, a mistake Coach A owned. The rest was a very good D2 team (32-2 last year, knocking off a D-1 team in exhibition last year) versus a UT team that due to injuries was forced to rely on freshmen, a player that joined last week, and point guard that played 32 minutes more than her average for all of last year.

The fact that they played as a team, didn't get lost on offense, didn't commit turnovers (8 total IIRC), and had the resilience to put away a team that was knocking down shots all makes me much happier about the coaching.

    Good evening,
I just finished watching the game.
No need for anyone to over react Texas being up 4 late in the game they only dressed 7 which 3 never played a college game before so I’m sure the butterflies were flying. The team was not at full strength which I am sure would’ve changed the makeup of this game.

-Defense was stellar most of the night
    - Foul trouble in the post could be an issue
    - Guards played good defense on the perimeter & crashed the boards well
Don’t underestimate what Joyner and Sug does to this lineup
The players responded well to the coaching case in point was in the 4th after a timeout they played lockdown defense until the clock went to zero

How did the offense look interms of execution and in what they were running? I’m asking understanding that players are going to miss shots and the fact that more than 25 to 30 points didn’t play.

Celeste struggled shooting from the field. Played good defense though. Allen-Taylor was the surprise of the night (24 points I think). Higgs looked good in the first half and looked a little tired in the second half.
It looked as if they didn’t want to show much offensively since they have a game in a week. Looked more run and gun at times. In first half they were about 50 % from field and from the 3 but slowed down a bit in the second half. 8 turnovers and last I saw 22 of 26 from ft line. Both big improvements from last year.

First quarter they were shooting lights out, as if no care in the world. Just posted up and shot a 3 and then went back on defense.

They got tighter as the game wore on and didn't make a 3 in the second half.

Defense was a little ragged, until the 4th.

Considering the limited amount of players they had available I'm very impressed with how they played overall. Of course there are things that need to be worked on but for the most part im pleased. Although routt and sophie the walk on may be great people I dont see them getting any playing time this season unless its absolutely needed. I believe Lashann Higgs will be back into her regular form in about a month. Joanne alllen taylor really surprised me so I see her getting significant minuets this season. Celeste was quite on the night but you can tell she had some nerves so nobody should be worried about her making an impact because she is a great player. Jada Underwood is the glue that holds texas together! She does all the dirty work and looks to have worked alot on her outside shooting and free throws so she is going to play a big part on how the season goes. Finally I think ashlee hannan deciding not to play for whatever reason is a huge loss because charli seems to still foul so its going to be hard when Texas plays teams with great post players. Overall im pleased with the effort and play. I expect the season to go much better than last season.

Joanne: looked light years ahead from last year. She was penetrating and scoring, and hitting 3's with confidence. I was genuinely impressed and not as concerned that Sug will miss much of the early season.

Celeste: plays beyond her youth. I saw her making mature decisions on defense, helping the helper in rotational defense. She's quick on the perimeter and will be a good on-ball perimeter defender. Her shots will fall.

LaShann: she's almost back to the old form.

Isabel: I agree with Racer, lots of promise and will be fine once she gets up to speed.

Shae: I just don't see it y'all. There are players for Lubbock Christian who are better than Shae right now.

Charli: pressing too much and getting into foul problems. She should be able to dominate against a much smaller team. Hoping she'll have that "A-ha moment" this season. It's gonna hurt big time if Ashley Hannan is unable to play when Charli and Joyner are in foul trouble.

And lastly, Andrea Lloyd is putting me to sleep. I miss Nell Fortner's enthusiasm and excitement.

lmao completely agree with that statement about shae. No offense to her but I honestly have no idea how she is even on the roster at Texas. She was getting killed on defense, can't stay in front of anyone to save her life and when she shot that jump shot at the end of the quarter and hit the bottom of the backboard I lost it. I really hope ashlee hannan plays this season and settles whatever is keeping her from being on the team at the moment.

Unless Ashley shows up I'm afraid Charli may foul out every game, possibly Joyner too. She's still on the roster so at least there's hope, but if she's not in school I don't think she could play in the fall.

Jada and Audrey just don't have the height and Shae didn't show anything. JAT looks improved, but the rest don't look any different. Isabel may end up being a better 3 pt shooter than Danni.

Letting Sedona get away is going to be this teams achilles heel.

It’s also Coach Aston’s job to try to help prevent them from picking up fouls by playing zone and other defenses. Which is why I was surprised to hear her say in the press conference last night that they haven’t played against a lot zone in practices or scrimmages.

Based on what? how they look against us. I really doubt they are a top 20 team.

Won the Division II women's basketball championship in 2018 and 2016 (where they went 35-0). Their team has 8 juniors/seniors in uniform against Texas. They plan on playing Baylor next, and then after that Mississippi State. So they don't shy away from competition.

Also, they're Division II. So comparing apples to oranges.

Re: Celeste. I watched the game with a friend who does not follow recruiting and so forth, and therefore did not come to the game with as many preconceptions. What she noticed? What excellent court awareness Celeste has, how well she passes, and good defense for a freshman. These are great qualities that will help Texas this year. Scoring can come more slowly. The team has players who can put up points.

Speaking of points - Hello Joanne Allen-Taylor. It will be interesting to see what she can do against D1 competition. Great job by both Joanne and Coach Carey to get Joanne ready.

Low Turnovers! -- What a welcome change. Sure, this was an exhibition game against a D11 team. But, be real. A huge number of Texas turnovers the last few years have been completely unforced in any case. The turnovers have resulted from players getting ahead of themselves, not communicating with each other, and always going for the home run.

Joyner -- She sounds as if she has really grown up. It is downright heartwarming to hear her speak. I hope we see that maturity on the court. I am hopeful.

OK sounds better. Why did Joyner not play. Probably answered in above comments I missed.

Joyner suffered what she described as a minor ankle sprain and is in a walking boot. She said she would be ready to go opening night. Sounded like the boot was more precautionary than anything else.
