I like Niele but she's gotta prove that she can manage the office of Head Coach before she gets my vote to come here. There are some good young coaches out there - Adia Barnes comes to mind for some reason lol - unfortunately/fortunately our next coach cannot be someone's FIRST head coaching job - the coach who replaces Karen must have some HC experience and wins under her/his belt and they must be able to evaluate talent -- and fit for your program. Signing All Americans doesn't prove that you can evaluate talent necessarily. I see a lotta folks talking about signing All Americans but many times it's the kids just beneath that level who are so dang hungry - that bring a program back to prominence. Hell, wish we could get someone even in the same neighborhood as Chennedy at A&M. Absolute terror from day 1.
If this season continues to go the way it's going I hope CDC realizes this has been going on for years and does not give Aston another year. I say he just cuts all ties and looks for a new coach hopefully the Louisville coach because he is a great recruiter & knows the game of basketball very well
NEVER happen! He’s an Aggie to the core! He would go to tamu when Gary Blair retires but Mississippi State will open up the bank Valt to keep him!!
That’s the biggest issue with Walz - availability. I don’t see it. As far as not knowing what you’re going to get, that’s an issue with every coach. Texas thought they’d hit a homer with GG - HC experience and big wins at a significant level. I’d rather see a youngish, hungry coach who has seen and been integral to a HOF coach (McGraw) than someone in their 50s who is cashing in toward the end of their career. There’s no such thing as a safe hire. Ivey and McGraw both said the main reason for her taking the Memphis job was to move her along the HC track considering McGraw shows no signs of going anywhere in the near future.
That’s what I don’t get about Coach Aston. How could you not totally change what you were doing after a year like last year? It’s as if she believes she’s a Supreme Court justice with a lifetime appointment.
Jeff Walz would definitely be my first choice or Kelly Graves at Oregon. He had Great teams at Gonzaga when he had one and 2 star players. Runs an offense that players want to play in.
They’re great names but, right now, they’re at programs with more cache than Texas. Oregon and Louisville both would break open their piggy banks to retain them.
The only thing that I think that might be intriguing to them is the fact that Texas has a natural recruiting base to recruit from. Oregon doesn’t have that and Louisville doesn’t either although to a lesser extent.
who’s a successful mid major or lower tiered power 5 coach that would be more likely to be lured away?
I was thinking the same thing. I think those school's would do everything in there power to keep them. I also do believe if that coaching job opens up there will be plenty of great coaches who would flock to the chance to coach at Texas. Especially with the fan base Texas has and the new arena being built great opportunity for a coach to come in and bring in some top level recruits & turn this program around. Just watching the post game conference Aston just seems lost and confused and has no answer to what the problem is. She keeps saying inexperience but at some point that excuse gets worn out.
Point taken but Oregon just got 5 of the top 33 players in the 2020 class, with the attraction of the city, the momentum from Ionescu, and the Nike affiliation, they are a national destination now. I think the lack of a recruiting base is actually a bigger issue for Louisville these days.
I don’t know if I’d be concerned with ‘if’ Texas could lure a mid-major/lower P5 Coach. I just don’t think swiping a HC from a current Top 10 program is likely unless UT Athletics goes full aggy (Fisher) and I can’t see them doing that for WBB.
Question: What would be the +/- of a Becky Hammon coming in as a new head coach. I believe her NBA salary is still in K $ range, therefore not requiring a M $ lure.
By all accounts, Becky has no interest in coaching WBB. She is on track to be the 1st female NBA coach and I doubt anything would tempt her enough to change course.
Great coaching job being done at Rice. Their coach was Associate Head Coach at Maryland for several years prior to taking over at Rice. Her teams are disciplined and execute well. Still... does that mean it would equate to success at somewhere like Texas? It almost feels like we really wouldn't be able to lure any great candidates. I don't know... too disgusted right now to put much thought into it.
Jeff Walz makes $1.15M. Kelly Graves makes $650k. Ask Mike White if money doesn’t talk. He was getting $350k at Oregon and is getting $500k at Texas. Aston gets $775k plus $162k in incentives. CDC would pay to get the right Coach.
That was certainly some great offensive play today. I really like the new scheme. Having 1 player go up against 5 is a great new revelation I'm sure soon to become the new standard in women's basketball. It just so exciting to see 1 person dribble around for 25 sec, try to blast through 5 defenders and then throw it to the other team. I bet no other coaches have ever thought of that.
I posted last year amid the transfer of Chasity Patterson and many of you got all mad. I said the truth. The culture in this program is horrendous. Aston is not only a terrible coach but horrible with players. Did you guys not think there was a problem then? You should have expected this. And some of the kids signed last week couldn’t play at a juco. Oh, and btw, Texas would never get Vic.
Just doesn’t understand the lack of aggression? How about poor coaching and the team knows it now! That team looked unorganized and mentally beat coming out of the gate.
