I tell ya what, y'all. This ugly beast raises its noggin every few years ... but whomever is in charge of that blaring apparatus beyond the S End Zone had as bad a night as did the team ... as did the fandome! Never been to DKR that quiet at a game.

Hey Godzilla Tron dude ... don't be playing that thing when the LHB is playing ... and certainly not when the fans are trying to muster TEXAS/FIGHT.

But at least we're adding mary jane to the alcohol, now ... and still smuggling our liquor in front of the kids. Sigh. High horse alert, roger copy.

But really, the "experience" is getting ridiculous ... comments/questions/concerns?

Keeps me away. If I want an "NBA Experience" I will go to a NBA arena and get my hearing damaged.

I have fond memories of Memorial that I will keep.

i'm only kinda old at 51. i like it in measured quantities.

to your point. you gotta know when to bring some manufactured energy and when to let the band and the crowd do it.

that guy and the drum major should have head phones with each other.

what I've learned this year is that most of that "manufactured energy" is everywhere ... Baylor has it. OU has it. haven't been to Bama, but I expect they have it too. THE VERY SAME recordings.

    Pitiful.

Can't help but wonder if 247sports isn't involved with this.

I just can't get behind the hip hop nonsense ... which is really weird, because they DO play a lot of 80s, too ... now the familiar "Don't Stop Believin" w/ the cell phone candlelighting. we are the world .. wait ... what starts here changes the world! :p

Guess I'm becoming a curmudgeon for real ... rather than having just spoke of it in years' past.

Went to my first game in almost a decade yesterday, and the sound system was the most noticeable difference.

Godzillatron made its debut when I was a student. While there are less ads than there used to be, the overuse of the sound system makes the stadium experience much worse. Too loud and too frequent. Here's a list of needed changes:
    1. Turn it down. You ever notice yourself going into a shell when there's this obnoxious loudmouth that won't shut up? That's the relationship the crowd has with the sound system.
    2. Instead of what amounts to one gigantic speaker in the south end zone, create a system of smaller speakers distributed throughout the stadium. Half the volume would still be heard clearly by everyone.
    3. Use canned music and "pump up" sound effects less often. Not only does it get annoying, but the crowd doesn't get pumped up at the same sounds and graphics the 17th time they hear and see them.
    4. Don't ever play anything while the band is playing.
    5. The play-by-play announcer needs to talk less frequently and use fewer words when doing so. For example, "And that Sam Ehlinger pass is complete to wide receiver #6 Devin Duvernay, who makes the catch before going out of bounds for a gain of eight yards! Forced out of bounds by #81 defensive back Firstname Lastname of Kansas. They'll mark the ball at the Kansas 46 yard line, that brings up 2nd down and 2 to go for the Texas Longhorns," could be replaced with, "Caught by Devin Duvernay, 2nd and 2."
Not much of the content was advertising, so you have to wonder what the motivation is. In years past, you always figured the fan experience was being trampled by ads in the name of the almighty dollar. No one appears to like the sound system, and it doesn't seem like it makes money, so why keep doing it?

Oh ... Bob Cole was doing some sort of JD Sumner (he's on YouTube, world class bass vocalist, gospel later, but was one of Elvis' backup singers) sound alike ... while he has a good announcer's voice, he's no JD Sumner on the low end range. Ended up sounding like a bullfrog with a bellyache.

ah ... @Ajo Macho ... you reminded me ... somewhere after half-time I noticed a speaker stack on the NE corner field level. The LHB was mic'd ... on our west side seats ... were getting LHB twice with a delay.

I know the band has been moved a couple of times as the stadium has changed ... but seems like they were best, lately, in the S End Zone.

What's with putting the "other" band in the NE bleed section ... to include the Alumni Band???

    Shaark,

When was JD not gospel? True that his Stamps Quartet was one of only three groups to back up Elvis (primarily The Jordanaires and occasionally Jake Hess and The Statesmen). Elvis revered JD from the times JD let Elvis in the gospel concerts in Memphis for free.

If you have an ear for music, you can tell when the Stamps Quartet backed up Elvis on recordings because his voice is different. Elvis loved and admired JD, but was also intimidated by him.

FWIW, Stamps Baxter Music was located in South Oak Cliff. I remember meeting Frank & VO Stamps and Albert Brumley as a kid, but when you're 4-5 years old that tall skinny man with the booming bass voice was scary.

you clearly know more history between Elvis and JD than I do ... I just remember the backup singers of which JD was one.

Touche on "when was JD NOT Gospel" ... I remember Mom and Dad going to see Elvis in Dallas ... 74/75? And Dad spoke of the "play off" JD did with the pianist ... JD could sing lower than the lowest piano key.

Anyhow ... he was a good un and I still play The Masters V

That's very cool about your meeting those guys as a youngster! :)

    Shaark,

Earlier this year I brought the "family piano" from East Texas to my daughter's house in Memorial. We always thought that my grandfather bought it new in 1932 for my mom to learn to play, but I contacted the manufacturer and discovered from the serial number that is was made in 1906-1908.

Driving back alone, i started reflecting on the people/groups that practiced around that old piano in my grandparents living room. That's when I realized that all three of Elvis" backup groups (Jordanaires, Statesmen, & Stamps) had stayed in their huge front bedroom and practiced around that old piano. The list if gospel greats that did that is longer than I can remember.

Tell you parents I have a great story about Elvis & Don Roby that I'll share if we ever meet.

AWESOME! Again thanks for sharing that.

Gonna perceive your being a Believer ... Hence ... you'll get to share your story with Pops in Heaven (pretty soon, methinks). He departed a little over 3 years ago. But Mom would love to hear it. I would too!

    Thanks, Nash.

About a year before he died, I went to see my friend Jim Duke, aka, James H "Red" Duke, Jr, because I was having back problems. Not many are aware that after Jim graduated from aTm (he was a yell leader), he graduated from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth to be a Baptist preacher, then he went to medical school.

Jim's diagnosis - "Son, it's called gettin old. There is an alternative, but as your friend, I have to tell you that you ain't spiritually ready for that yet".

I have a list of his quotes from over the years and told him if his kids didn't put them on his tombstone, I was going to get Burnt Orange spray paint and a stencil and paint them on his headstone.

I think I'm banned from The State Cemetery

    Well back to the post.

You'd think these morons would at least do some market research. It is a terrible experience now. Oh but maybe the "athletes" like it better?

aight ... today, for KState at 1100, the sound system was louder than EVER.

What is happening hear??? I left my post near the end of halftime to get away from that thing for a while. Missed the opening possession of the 2nd Half. Have NEVER left my post before. The decibel meter on my phone literally measured 94 dB during some of that "manufactured energy"

Someone with some scratch please tell the AD to knock it off!

That’s why I have ear plug in one ear and Craig way in other. In the ear with ear plug I can hear everything just fine - it’s way too loud.

IDK the best way to do this ... but what about reviews on some of these ... sound pressures blasting from the sound system ...

    Here's the first one:

    Stand Up

    Yay/Nay
a dash (3-4 seconds) if we ABSOLUTELY have to

How about turning off the damn noise box, and turning on the Longhorn Band? (Without the benefit of a Bob Cole introduction.)

Well that about sums this poll.

closed ... conclusion ... no more noise box (sts)! replays are great ... interrupting the LHB, Cheerleaders, Texas Poms ... no.

I suppose we should be thankful, @SabreHorn we don't have those insane "dot races" anymore.

I was nominated to be a Vet of the Game here while back ... when I was reminded it was "Texas Lottery" sponsored ... "no thanks."

I find it incredible an institution which is supposed to have so much caring for the poor would support a tax on the poor ... I know ... flirting with West Mall now ...

It's Baylor's defense mechanism against the jumbotron drowning out their announcer.
