Well crap that means we are stuck with Tom. Two things I don't like about Tom:
    1) his inflexibility
    2) game time decisions
I thought when we hired Fedora he would be a good advisor and a help for Tom in game-time decision making but that hasn't happened.

We do that more than occasionally. That's part of the runner right blockers left nonsense.

For everything there is a time ... a time for reverses is ... RARE. If you can't block and tackle, you can't play football.

If you run 5 speed options to the right and 2 to the left. You’ll get the defense to flow with the QB. Then hit the reverse. It’s a timing play. We have so much speed we could use it differently. Jake Smith, Duvernay. I don’t know what’s up with J Whitt but boy we could use him on that type of misdirection play. I’m a product of the 80’s so I still like speed option looks and misdirection plays. They can be incorporated into a power spread portfolio and work. You can pass out of that look too which Sam would love!

But Herman says he doesn't want to be " a jack of all trades, master of none."
he would rather be vanilla, predictable, and suck in the run game.

I’ll say it again, I expect a different Texas team tomorrow. We’ll see, but never in his career has Herman been under such duress. I am convinced that he is finally in re-evaluation mode.

On offense, I said this in another thread but defenses can be controlled by creative play-calling. Best recent case-in-point was the Vikings’ victory over the Cowboys a couple of weeks ago. Outmatched, their O beat Dallas’ D due to creative play-calling.

I’m hoping Herman/Beck & Company have that in them and can surprise us, and Baylor.

This is what LSU did. Got the NO Saints Passing Game Coordinator and viola, new and improved Offense.
I would give Waldron a very serious look.

i think that looking outside the box, like LSU did, might bring positive results. There are no guarantees, but there are good people coaching offensive football creatively and intelligently. We just need to get one--and it might take some luck to get him.
And I understand we don't have anyone playing like Joe Burrow on our roster now--but we might develop one with the right coach in place.

Sorry, Cary, the days of experimentation in Austin are over. Proven & clean or NFW.

Piss ant schools can experiment, we never should have, but then Powers should never have been allowed to make any decisions.

I understand what you are saying and "Proven and clean" would be great with me.

I disagree with your earlier post where you stated that there were no proven and clean folks available. Not that i know of "proven and clean" coaches that are available, I don't. But that doesn't mean that they aren't out there. People become available from time to time. And sometimes minds change, and "unavailable" becomes "available," as I'm sure you've seen over the years.

If TH were to begin a search to replace a coordinator don't you think he could do better?

You have much greater knowledge of and experience in the football world than I, and I bet that over the course of time you have witnessed unexpected coaching changes resulting in positive outcomes from said changes once or twice

You are correct that unforeseen positive changes can occur.

    I have two problematic questions:

    1) Why did Aranda reject Herman?

    2) We have a great football mind on staff in Larry Fedora. What does he do? As someone else posted, not seeing his fingerprints on anything so far. The man is far more focused, detailed, & fundamental than anyone else on staff, so why are we so lacking in those areas?

That said, can Herman attract the talent you want?

Sabre, point one initially the issue was was a $1.9 million difference in salary. That has now dwindled to $800k but will grow after LSU wins the CFP (if he stays at LSU - no telling how much some Power 5 middle of the pack team will pay him to be HC).
There were probably some other issues, but that pay gap would be unexplainable to the wife.

I am also puzzled by the apparent lack of Fedora input in the offense, especially after the oSu game.

^^^You have answered my questions that were posed as statements: first in # 1 above you have asked a question which I cannot begin to answer because I have no idea who Aranda is, demonstrating that you clearly know much more about NCAA football than I. But I assume he is involved with athletics at a big time football school who was unimpressed with TH.

Point taken. Perhaps TH wasn't the answer we were all hoping for. We shall see within the next 15 months, if not sooner.

Second, in # 2 you point to Fedora who is acknowledged to have a fine football mind, and clearly we need help on both sides of the ball. Why Fedora hasn't been tapped to help in a clear and direct position of authority (especially on the offensive side) baffles me too.

I believe that Fedora is generally clean and proven. Since Fedora is already here, and has talents the program needs, Why TH hasn't utilized him to a greater degree may say more about TH than it does Fedora.

Cary, Aranda is LSU's DC who is making almost a million more per year than Orlando. He was also Herman's roommate in college.

You may have misunderstood the issue which is - why hasn't Herman listened to Fedora? Your observation and Sabre's are the same.

Bottom line: Herbie was right, and no one worth a **** wants the Texas job.

    Convince me I’m wrong.

HIC, you and I agree on most everything, but not this time. At top programs like Texas the expectations are very high, and they should be. Herbie made a stupid comment loaded with racial innuendo, inferring that because of the color of his skin, Strong wasn’t given a fair shot. That was crap and Herbstreit is a fool for having said what he said.

Any aspiring coach with a desire to prove his worth should salivate at the opportunity to be paid $5-7 million a year, live in one of the finest cities in the country, and recruit in the most fertile area available. If they’re intimidated by the expectations then they’re not the caliber of individual we seek.

Let me add that expectations at Texas are not unlike those at Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State and a handful of other programs. How much heat do you think Harbaugh is feeling?

People knock the job because we’re Texas and we’re not doing what is expected of us. Many want to stomp on us to keep us down, so they trash the job.

They’re wrong and we will be back, better than ever. I just hope it happens soon.

Look, at the time, after the Charlie Strong debacle, we HAD to take Tom Herman for the sake of the brand. He was the guy everyone wanted at the time and we had to show that, if there is a guy out there that everyone wants, we can get him if we want him. We had to protect the brand. Maybe it will work out, maybe it won't, but, at the time, we had to take TH.

I don't ascribe to the racial motivation ... but Herbie was right, Strong wasn't given a fair shot.

HornFans Nation ... I found what TH is doing that is causing our gameday issues ...

I think Herman must be doing this every game since OU, but we have him video'd.

Some one tell him to stop doing that!

What’s your definition of a fair shot? Another year of 6-7? Two more?

Let the Head Coach be the head coach, Dukesteer.

Sabre has enlightened me that some of those Strong wanted didn't want to interview, but we know Patterson hamstrung him from the start ... and it showed.

Never said Charlie was to be the next DKR, but when you get treated like that ... it's embarrassing for the University and its stakeholders. Patterson finally was dispatched but the handwriting was on the wall with Strong.

It just wasn't a good period for UT Football and Strong wasn't the sole significant problem

We’ll just have to disagree. Almost everyone on this Board questioned Strong’s decision to bring Shawn Watson with him to Texas. That proved to be a big mistake.

Strong’s pedigree was defense but his defenses were poor at Texas. When he canned Bedford and took over, nothing changed.

Patterson was an a** but Strong was given plenty of opportunity to succeed. But he didn’t. Two years was enough to see that, but he was given three. By the end of Year 2 no one wanted to join his sinking ship, that’s why they had to bring in the big guns to persuade Sterlin Gilbert to come to Austin.

I don’t think Sabre believes that Strong wasn’t given “a fair shot.” I guess if he reads this we will know soon enough.

didn't mean to imply Sabre thought that ... only what I said ...

I realize I'm not in a large crowd with realizing Texas didn't do its best for Strong. It doesn't matter. it didn't and no amount of spin will change that.

We dumped the AD which restricted Texas' best ... nuff said.
