I agree that the optics of those 3, Kelly’s move, then decommit and then Gusters move and then Gusters and Andrews selecting Baylor would suggest some sort of major drama. Somewhere in there it cost the Duncanville coach(a UT alum) her job. And Texas lost all three recruits. A coincidence?

My gut (for what it's worth) tells me it's no coincidence at all. I mean Kelly didn't just have a change of heart regarding Texas... she totally dismissed us altogether. Something doesn't seem right with that situation.

A friend said Aston's contract wasn't renewed. I believe she had a three-year contract extension in 2016. With that, this would definitely be her final season.

Kelly’s situation might be connected by Imo the other two were always going to Baylor.

I hope it is its time for a change for the better to turn this program around. Although the assistant coaches may be nice and everything, if aston goes I hope they all go as well. Texas needs to bring in an entirely new staff and get the ball rolling from the ground up

I won't necessarily call for new coaching - though I won't NOT call for it either. I just think we, as fans, are a little too far removed. And there's also the consideration of opportunity cost (a kind of who's available).

I will say that unless you're getting graduate transfers or transfers with a high likelihood of waivers, it's hard to build a new program with just a coaching change. In softball, White was able to get some current players to follow him. Same thing can happen in volleyball. But in basketball, there's a wait. So under any transition, you've got to hope for either 1) unsigned or flipped recruits or 2) grad transfers. That, OR, you've got to resign yourself that the first year is "rough".

Another element to consider about new coaching is that some of our current players may leave. We lost a bunch already, so it makes sense that those who stayed are committed to Aston/the program.

That "rough year" is going to happened anyway. The question is, do you want all years to be "rough".

Well, Texas got a little more of unwanted exposure today. McDonald was selected as ESPNW's National Player of the Week. Some milestones for her at Erwin Center. I have condensed what was wrote below:

Aari McDonald took 29 shots this week. The Arizona guard made 23 of them. Go to your local gym or neighborhood rim, and shoot a basketball 29 times. We'll make this easy. Don't worry about finding someone to guard you on those shots. Don't worry about running up and down the court or guarding someone on defense. Just hoist that many shots, and see if you make as many of them as college basketball's best scorer did this week. Capped by a school-record 44 points in Sunday's blowout win on the road against No. 22 Texas, McDonald did more than enough to make sure the unbeaten Wildcats enter the AP Top 25 this week. She also did plenty to claim espnW player of the week honors. The junior made 14-of-18 shots from the field and all 14 free throw attempts in the 83-58 win. It was the worst home loss for Texas since Karen Aston's first season and matched the most points ever scored by a visiting player in the Frank Erwin Center, where Texas has played since 1977. McDonald hit a long jumper on Arizona's first possession, after which Texas' Sug Sutton appeared to ask referees to look at some problem with the basketball. They examined it and swapped in a new one. On the next Arizona possession, McDonald hit another long jumper. Ball don't lie -- any ball, in this case. At halftime, McDonald alone led Texas 22-19. Then she scored 22 more in the second half. A week after Oregon's Sabrina Ionescu won the season's first player-of-the-week honors for her performance against Team USA, McDonald showed why the Ducks and their star won't have it easy against mere college competition in the Pac-12 -- not with someone like McDonald around. Coming off a WNIT championship, Arizona was picked to finish sixth in the conference. But with the nation's leading returning scorer in tow, that means either the Pac-12 is ridiculously loaded this season (and Oregon State's Preseason WNIT title on Sunday certainly lends further credence to that idea) or people are sleeping on the Wildcats. Then again, maybe it's both. Because if McDonald misses six shots a week, Texas won't be the last team she humbles.

I love coach Aston and over the years I have been a big supporter of the program. 25 year season ticket holder. I was shocked after the game in the Craig Way interview Aston said she apologizes to the fans for an embarrassing performance against AZ. We simply overlooked them and did not prepare for this team. That is not the coach I know and the team we have backed for so many years. The team was soft and not physical. No hussle to the ball. How a team can regress so quickly is beyond me. From almost undefeated until January two years ago to a team that will be lucky to finish third. Losing Travis and Tina really hurt us. I think the recruiting is really average. This will be very hard to watch.

Exactly what Gail G was criticized for doing when she came to Texas.

Thanks new coach isn’t keeping these assistants. No way. The entire program is underperforming - top to bottom.

I have always wondered if that move (replacing all of JC's assistants) was truly 100% Gail's decision. :idk:

Another mid-major coach at Texas? No thank you. That's a hard pass.

If Aston goes, everyone should and probably WILL go - nothing to be gained by keeping assistants with no real identity, no real connection to the players, and who appear to be little more than 3 more people for Karen to treat badly.

I'm curious @Scamp who you think should be "saved" when Aston is gone? And what value do you perceive they'll bring to the program?
