With half the day to think about it, Herman seems to have done the right thing in a difficult situation. The offense regressed as the season progressed while the defense rallied down the stretch. Ultimately, you're not getting paid to learn and experiment on the job in the Big 12 (Orlando) and not getting paid to underperform let alone regress (Beck). You cut out a lot of things, favoritism, loyalties, what have you by relieving them both. I like it Tom it's ballsy, it couldn't have been easy, and I hope it works out. Your job depends on it. So what's next? Ash sure getting tossed around a lot as DC candidate. It's in-house, a bit of a buddy hire, and I hope Tom Herman is right if that's where it goes. I think Orlando is a smart DC and that he might be onto to something with his machinations re: dirty dime etc. The problem is that he had some pretty bad in-game decisions and not enough time / healthy personnel to see things to fruition. I can only speculate. Privy to the system, however, maybe Ash picks up where Orlando left off with a healthy roster and more time. Dave Aranada spoke highly of Todd Orlando and I don't think we've seen the last of him. Jay Bateman at UNC intrigues me and we could money whip UNC while also testing Mack's "When Texas calls, you come running.". mantra fully. Who would you go after? On offense Brady at LSU and Harrell at USC are mainstream press front runners. For me it gets murky from the start but the improbables seem a little more clear... Brady has a good thing started at LSU and even with a raise, why give up the success and security he's already building to start all over again in Austin where he might be out if it tanks next year? LSU will counter respectably if necessary and overall I'm not seeing it against the risk of Texas right now. Herman's an OC... whatever he chooses here is in his wheelhouse. Sam Ehlinger isn't lacking for the physical tools but needs some cultivation to become an NFL caliber quarterback his senior season. I hope he gets that with our next hire here. Who would you pick? We'll have some time on our hands before the bowl game so might as well what-if
Despite attractive $$$ that might be thrown at him, me thinks Brady won't leave LSU on a ROLL and bet that Herman suceeds at UT.
Barry Odem would be one I would look at for DC. Looks like defenses improved under his watch. Chris Ash....haven't seen anything stat-wise on any of his defenses, plus most of his history shows Co-DC jobs.
I also applaud Herman for making moves, and that becomes a lot easier when you know your own head is on the block next. What I hope is that we don’t just get different staff, we get great staff.
Good assessment. For Brady, assuming Herman wants him, it would seem like a no brainer for him to to come. How can he top his performance this season at LSU next year? I don’t think he can. Yet in Austin, with lower expectations, if he has a repeat, he will move to genius status. And in Austin, he has another very capable Heisman candidate, another senior, that can take him there. He will also have a very good OL, receivers and particularly if we get Robinson and Jordan + Whittington, a loaded backfield. Additionally, he would likely be the OC...which he will not be at LSU unless Orgeron promotes him and displaces his current OC. Further, I wonder how Baton Rouge compares to Austin as a place to live? Not.
I hope CDC is involved. Especially if Herman is pushing a buddy hire. Herman needs equal or better minds than his own at his coordinator positions. His immaturity has shown through a few too many times and surrounding himself with serious talent will allow him to rise as well.
Worster, the first thing I thought as well....not with everything rolling down hill at LSU, now....no way!
Greg Robinson ..... Proven DC and can get defense playing top flight in short order. IF he will come. Won't have to get in a bidding war to get him. Chad Morris ..... OC who did well at Clemson. Could come on board right now. Again no bidding war to get him. Should be able to recruit Texas with his background . Both should be willing to step aboard since they are not working now. Both former HC's.
Chad Morris sounds like a good choice, I agree with Majestic. Barry Odom sounds good, I don’t know as much about Ash. Doubt we could get Aranda but he would be really good. He will be a HC soon.
I could add Joe Brady LSU, & Shoop DC from MSU or Scalley DC at Utah as more good choices. Will be an interesting December.
True that! Bowl game, early signing date and now coaching hires to boot. I hope that CDC and TH have the time to read all the threads here so they will know what to do!
Maybe he would like to work with a rededicated Ehlinger during Sam's senior year and he would salivate at the incoming QB room which LSU does not have. I bet Texas backs up the money trucks for him and Aranda.
Is there anyone who wouldn't be happy with taking both of Lsu's coordinators? Here is what I would do. I posted this in another thread but it bares repeating. Offer crazy big contracts to get Brady, start a 2 million with the intent to go to 3 million for his services. LSU will match, there is no way they won't match. I repeat no way in hell they let Texas steal their new golden boy coach. They would fire Ogeron before they let their OC go. Force them into a situation where they have to break the back, and when they do, you do the same thing for their DC. But you will get him. They didn't do nearly as well on defense as they were hoping, letting him go to a big contract is something they can swallow if it means keeping their OC. Then you steal their DB coach, as well, or you take the DB coach at Georgia, the reason is to possibly steal some elite recruits in the process. After that, you go get Harrell and let him run the passing game. Get Jeff Traylor and let him run the Tight ends and Special teams. Get Rashard Samples and let him run the receivers. Boom, you have an offensive staff of elite recruiters and guys that can get the job done.
Yeah, He's about to get that $$$ anyway. But, we should at least ride that horse long enough to drive the cost up for big Ed and all their shenanigans this year.
Bill, I heard they did all of this last night and it will be announced at an 11am presser this morning.
I was thinking about Morris since his firing and it's just not going to work. I think he's been at the reins of programs that "plateau" under his watch and the last time he was the architect of real success was in the HS ranks. Clemson's teams with him were more known for their defense, and if they had success in specific games, it's because they had way different personnel than we do. Plus, he's 50 and an Aggie. I think we need someone a hair younger who can relate to the players and isn't beholden to Herman's style. We've gone through some old-*** retreads who've been coaching through the changes that have happened over the past 15 years with Watson and Beck and we don't need to relive that any longer. Harrell would never come here. He hates us. Scalley is kind of a Diaz/Orlando clone, so I don't want that. He's big into deception and bringing blitzes from weird angles and delays and that might work in the Pac 12 but it hasn't for us. We need someone who understands that the pressure needs to start at the DL level and free up the back 7 or 8 to follow their assignments and play without fear of getting burned.
Harrell likes to run a lot out of 1-1 personnel, like Herman ("power spread") Personally I prefer some type of air raid spread if we are going to hire Tech guys, which seems possible
Source of announcing this today? That would be an extremely fast discussions / agreements. However Texas can't wait too long to make these moves as they may impact key recruits for '20 and '21. Go after Garrett since he won't be Jerry's boy much longer! NOT!!
...probably the only one who could pull that off! And totally agree about driving up prices for LSU btw...just posted something similar above before I read yours. "Be ye therefore wise as serpents"
Some more names from Inside Texas -- Maybe Emmett Jones as a WR coach Maybe Sonny Cumbie (if let go) and Darin Chiaverini (Colorado) - who coached WRs at Tech and ST too. he has also recruited this state So, several former Texas Tech names Depending on the OC, the view is we may need a WR coaches
I have to ask, just how committed would someone that's hated Texas most of his life be regardless of how good of a coordinator he may or may not be?
No way I would offer $2,000,000 for Brady. The guy has had “one year,” an great QB and excellent receivers. He’s probably very good but not worthy of those kind of number IMO. And if LSU can pay him $2,000,000/year, he probably should take it. We thought Herman would be our savior. That hasn’t turned out so well yet. We need to have our eyes wide open with respect to this hire, what we pay and have realistic expectations. The flavor of the month approach often doesn’t work out. I’d be happy with Brady, without the Brinks Truck price tag.
