There's about to be a lot of action and movement nationwide on the coaching front.

Missouri just canned Barry Odom after going 6-6 (and 25-25 over 4 seasons). An average record for an average team. They're obviously trying to take a step up, but I'm not sure who they'll be able to get that will make much of a difference. This is a historically mediocre team with a mediocre recruiting ground. Big 10 teams poach some of the top Missouri talent, and they compete with the Big 10 teams for the Illinois and surrounding states' talent towards the North and East, the SEC teams towards the South and East, and with the Big 12 teams towards the West. The bright spot is that the SEC East is a place where a good coach could make some waves; you've got the big 2 -- UF and UGa, and a bunch of mediocrity to compete with. See Arkansas below for Norvell possibility.

USC -- With a strong 2nd half of the season, Helton finishes at 8-4. USC is no longer a dumpster fire, but the Trojans are clearly not up to their historic par. Now they're debating his fate in Tinseltown. Should he stay or should he go?

Arkansas -- They're not going to stick with this interim coach, Barry Lunney, Jr. The question is: what really good coach would want to be at Fayetteville? If they're smart (a big "if" in the hogs case), they'll court the Pirate. Memphis coach Mike Norvell is another possibility, although apparently Norvell was rejected by the Hogs before and he is reported to hold a grudge... If Arkansas doesn't take Norvell, perhaps Missouri would? Then again, why would Norvell leave Memphis where he can compete year in and year out for a conference championship and where he is the toast of the town (a Gary Patterson-type situation).

UCLA -- Chip Kelley has to step it up next year after going 4-8. His team really isn't all that bad. A few bounces of the ball and they'd be break even.

Arizona -- Kevin Sumlin is on the hot seat. And Arizona gets pretty darn hot (at least the weather does). He's grace period ends after next year.

Miami -- Manny __iaz is off to a forgettable start after losing to Duke and finishing 6-6 for the first year of the Manny era. He deserves 3-4 years to put it together.

Time will tell who the bigger fraud is between he and Tom Herman but no, no he doesn't need 3-4 years. He's never stayed anywhere that long and he won't last that long at Miami anyways.

I don't think it's fair to can a coach before he's been there 3-4 years.

Chop, I used to think the exact same thing until Charlie Strong came along.

After losing to the Florida equivalent of a Lone Star Conference team, and not just losing, but getting dominated, Diaz deserves nothing but to clean out his office. It won’t happen because the convicts haven’t been able to find anyone to take the job in over a decade. NOBODY wants that job and the trash can WalMart fans that go with it.

don't be surprised to see one of these schools with an opening go after the OC for LSU. His offense was unstoppable. If nothing else, he is going to put butts in the seats.

He's had an outstanding first year that's for sure but I think a HC offer might be a little premature. Next year he won't have Burrow & folks are probably going to want to see how he does.

But he will have Zachary Evans, I bet, and some really good players who do not have to worry about academic achievement.

Then there is Dave Aranda whom anybody who could afford him would take.

I would think Muschamp seat is a little warm about now. Who wants him, though?

:lmao: that's really funny Yeah I'm not expecting a huge drop off for Brady at LSU next year. I imagine he'll become a HC when he wants to if he wants to.

I'm told Evans is headed to Brazos County unless Orgeron ups the price.

It's a bit annoying to see some teams consistently reload at QB year-after-year, and barely skip a beat. Such teams have a system down pat and a new good QB to step up every year. We don't ever seem to be one of those teams. It would be really good if we hire an OC that will get to that position.

So you have come full circle. Back in Sept I thought you said something different about the LSU offense, then again I believe there were more than a few that thought they had LSU figured out. My question, you really think Steve Ensminger would leave his hometown at his age?

Have you watched Myles Brennan, he is just as big and has a MUCH stronger arm. BTW, to all that keep calling Brady the OC, do your homework, some of you look as dumb now as you did in September.

Burrow did for Brady what Bridgewater did for Strong/Watson and Manziel did for Kingsbury, lets see how LSU's offense looks when it doesnt have a Heisman winner making all those tough throws. I'm not saying Brady wont be a great OC or HC but lets see how he does with more than just one great year/QB.

Yea, nothing has changed since September, right?

If that is the case, then you wouldn't mind losing your position coach/ non-OC to Texas?

Joe Burrows is a great QB, but there was a night and day difference in his play between this year and last year. He was good last year, this year he was unstoppable. I'll take my chances with giving the credit to the new OC and his offense putting Burrows in a position to be this great.

With Charlie Strong getting canned, the Tampa Bay paper lists the following potential candidates for So. Florida's new coach:

Jim Leavitt -- former S. Fla. coach, now an ***'t coach at FSU.

Willie Taggart -- former S. Fla. coach.

    Lane Kiffin -- FAU

Bret Bielema -- New England Patriots DL coach, former Badger and Pig.

Kerwin Bell -- So. Fla.'s OC

Larry Scott -- UF TE coach

Briles (Kendall Briles that is...) -- FSU OC.

Joe Brady -- LSU passing game coordinator (they can dream)

    Marcus Freeman -- Cincinnati DC

Shaun King -- So. Fla. RB coach.

    Jeff Scott -- Clemson co-OC

Jimmy Lake -- DC at the U. of Washington

While this job has built-in potential with its location in a recruiting hotbed, Tampa is a pro sports town, and they'll be 4th or 5th fiddle to UF, FSU, UM, and maybe UCF.

So where does Charlie go from here? (other than the bank)

I’m thinking he ultimately lands as a position coach at a mid-major program. Maybe a head coach, or better yet a DC, at a historically black college or an ivy. His strict disciplinarian style would also be suited to a scandal-marred program trying to clean up its image. He needs a smaller pond.

Was Charlie a disciplinarian? I did not know.

I had the impression that Charlie came here and shook things up early (running off players) to give the appearance of meaningful action. That may not be fair but it’s what it looked like to me.

Well, at least he tried on that front. Charlie laid down strict rules for off the field conduct. He preached respect for women, keeping on the straight and narrow, etc. He also really stepped up the drug testing. And, yeah, he ran off a lot of players who weren’t onboard early on.

Charlie had this stupid practice of punishing the injured players by segregating them into “The Pit.” I can’t remember the reports on exactly what they had to do in “The Pit”, but it was apparently very unpleasant. It was also regarded by many as some serious dumbfu@kery on the part of the Strong regime. In addition to possibly hindering players’ recoveries from injuries, this sounds like a great way to build team unity and buy-in for the program. Maybe Ol Chuck read Lord of the Flies for inspiration.
