Which Texas coach to be fired next ....
I'm thinking Aston to be the next notch on CDC's hammer.
4-4 on the season and has lost to every team with a pulse by double digits.
If she has a losing or near .500 season, she will be given a pink slip.
Shaka is also coaching for his job this year.
Pierce is on shaky ground in baseball after a last place finish in 2019.
Herman will be coaching for his job next season as well.

CDC's first big hire looked good last year as softball stepped it up.

Technically, CDC doesn’t have to fire Aston - she’s in the last year of her contract and could simply not be offered a new one, a la Connie Clark.

best if KA resigned right now to prevent further damage to her downfall. no elite player will want to come to Texas now and for good reasons.

It makes no sense to resign now. Hopefully she’ll be replaced after the season.

Agreed! Maybe there's a hidden gem on that staff. I doubt it, but her immediate exit is the only way we'd ever discover one if it exists.

After watching that horrible monstrosity online last night I can't imagine it being any worse with no coach at all. This is not a team at all, just a bunch of individuals hanging out. It doesn't look like any of them listen to a thing Karen says anyway.

Is there another B12 team that woulda lost to Hawaii last night? Getting rid or Karen now might even entice some of the top recruits not currently looking at Texas to consider Texas with a new coach coming in. Recruits watching the current team can only hurt our chances of getting them in the next class. Certainly Deja/Sedona could see what was happening and I'm sure others can too.

That would be great, except for the fact that all the other coaching candidates are currently coaching their teams and aren’t focused on what Texas is doing. Recruits aren’t going to consider any school in which they don’t know who the coach is going to be.

I think it could at least draw their attention back to Texas, to watch it all unfold and see who is hired. Either way, a replacement wouldn't be announced until after the season anyway. I've seen coaches relieved of duty or step down mid-season and one of the assistants take over. But you're right @kurupt the chances of it happening are slim to none.

Just curious if this tweet is true? Does every coach get one chance to shake up the staff. Just makes me wonder if this applies to all sports or just a general statement.

Didn’t think Karen was the right choice. Her trip to the Elite 8 had me eating crow. Now I’m just scratching my head. Makes no sense.

I would like the opinions those who have followed Texas Women's Basketball longer than I have (I started following in the mid-1990's):

Does Texas athletics have an unspoken rule of ONLY hiring female coaches for the women's basketball program, similar to Muffet McGraw's policy of hiring female assistant coaches only?

If so, would CDC buck the trend (Conradt, Goestenkors, Aston) and go against the grain at Texas of hiring a male basketball coach for the women's program because the most desirous names mentioned most on this board are Kelly Graves, Jeff Walz, and Vic Schaefer?

I've been following since I was a kid in the early 80s. There has always been an "assumption" among many fans that a man would never be hired to lead the WBB program at Texas. My personal opinion is that when there was a separate women's AD that may have been true. Who really knows for sure? After all, Coach Conradt hired Elliott for volleyball.

I understand why the "preference" would be to give such opportunities to women being that there doesn't seem to be many for them in the men's game. Again...who really knows? Are women APPLYING for jobs coaching men? I certainly can't say for sure one way or the other.

Having said all of that, at the end of the day you need to hire the right PERSON for the job. I'm thinking that maybe CDC would be willing to do just that. I also wonder if maybe Kamie Ethridge might be a consideration with her ties to the program.

Time will reveal all, and whatever decision is made regarding that position will tell us a whole lot about our AD. We'll know where the program really falls on the priority list.
Until then I, for one, will just try to grin and bear it. I've made my opinions clear on many, many occasions and there's no since in my continuing to bash KA. The pudding is done and the proof is in it.

I just hope we can get the right person IF a replacement is in fact made... it's going to take one helluva coach to salvage things, as the program is on the edge of the shitter -- the inside edge at that. They'll have to develop what's left, convince top returning players to stay, recruit top talent back to our school, AND go toe-to-toe with KM and the Baptists. What more perfect person than Jeff Walz? He happens to be a man... Oh well.

Definitely agree on this "Time will reveal all, and whatever decision is made regarding that position will tell us a whole lot about our AD. We'll know where the program really falls on the priority list."

We've become the program other programs look at and say SMDH - sad but true. Texas should NEVER be this bad and that's just a fact. Add to that fact that its coach doesn't appear to give two sheets about a program that was literally HANDED TO HER on a silver ____ platter. Not a good steward at all. And please, please don't bother telling me about the previous seasons - and all the glorious Sweet Sixteens we appeared in. We're supposed to play in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. We're Texas. But how about the 2-3 Final Fours that we should've danced in? And all Karen did was make excuses for not getting it done. So, please spare me all the stats of years past - we missed 2-3 Final Fours b/c Karen can't coach, and apparently won't listen to people who can help her. Last season was 1000% unacceptable and the beginning of this one reveals a coaching staff that's sub-BCS and players who look like they'd rather be at Six Flags. Damn shame. Can't wait for this nightmare to end and for a new, better era of Texas women's basketball to begin.

Ethridge coaches at Washington State, which is 4-3, with a better Massey Index Rating than Texas. And to evaluate her results, it helps to be familiar with the situation of the program when she arrived before last season - dismal. Washington State has been no better than mediocre and usually worse for the last 40 years. I think a lot of people are at least somewhat impressed with what she has done so far under the circumstances. That said, I am making no comment on whether or not Ethridge would be right for Texas.

There was a time when I would have definitely said yes - there is an unspoken rule. To be sure, our first coach was a man, but Jody Conradt championed - along with others- the Title IX movement that finally gave women a legitimate place in high school and college athletics.

I’m not sure how anyone feels about it these days, but I would imagine there are still enough of the old guard out there to at least assume a female coach is likely but not necessarily a given. I’m not a member of the old guard I reference, but I would prefer to see a women in that position provided they are qualified. I wouldn’t protest if a male coach were hired.

Goestenkors was an exceptional coach who did a lot more with less when she was here. The problem was she indeed had less. Recruiting was pretty dismal and I am aware of the many explanations why that wasn’t entirely Gail’s fault although she admirably fell on the sword and stepped aside without pointing any fingers. Her departure was extremely professional and she has my eternal respect for that.

Karen, on the other hand, was not even on my radar and I was unhappy with her selection because I felt she was unproven. I quickly learned, however, that her recruiting skills were off the charts. And her run to the Elite 8 suggested all the arrows were pointing in the right direction. But in this last three years all those arrows have been reversed... and then losing an ENTIRE top recruiting class - well it’s beyond bizarre.

For me, the one item that I can’t get past is the departure/transfer of Sedona Prince. I went from excited about the season to hesitant to now having zero expectations. We have literally lost players in the last three years that as a collective group could have been a National Championship squad on their own.

And still we have a bench loaded with highly recruited All Americans and yet struggled with RGV, UNT and couldn’t even beat Hawaii.

    I am absolutely dumbfounded.

Personally, I can think of no reason why any of the big name coaches regularly mentioned here would want to come to Texas. (Yeah, I know, $$$.) The usual suspects have top salaries and endorsement deals, facilities, administrative support and success. If any of those are declining, well, maybe they will want to move on. Fortunately, the WBB community and WBB media regularly mention Texas and Jody as WBB pioneers, but our history is 2 generations removed from today's players and probably unknown to the overseas players that are now prominent in the game. I think we assume that Texas is attractive because we so want it to be. I'm trusting CdC to thoughtfully find a new coach, as he did for softball, who is interested in putting together all aspects of a successful program - and can relate to high school stars. . CdC will take care of the resources, if a new coach can create a product that old and new fans and students want to support and watch. Not a fan of former players as head coaches at their alma mater or of re-treads on the hire-fire carousel, as football coaches often are. Having expressed this opinion, I hope we find some chemistry, have a successful season and get back to a top-10 ranking ... don't see that coming, but ... ever hopeful!

Yes, they are well respected - both left college coaching and went on to other basketball-related opportunities. I admire executives in any field who move on, rather than try to re-create a glorious, real or imagined, past.

Sidebar question for anyone who'd like to sound off - since you mentioned Gail Gestenkors. On what planet is ineffective recruiting NOT the coach's fault? Gail did not recruit the state of Texas effectively - how is that anybody else's fault except hers and her chosen assistants? The conspiracy theory about other people controlling a coach's recruiting process is always so absurd. By her own admission GG did not maximize her time at Texas. By her own admission GG didn't get it done here. By her own admission GG didn't have the right recruiting strategy here. I like Gail too but she clearly was not a fit at Texas, and she clearly did not do an outstanding job here. So, again - for the people in the balcony -- how is Gail's lackluster recruiting record someone else's sin? Please illuminate those of us who are vigorously scratching our heads.

I would like to think that we can attract several great candidates for this job. Someone asked 'why would anyone want to come to Texas'? Because as bad as the current situation is, Texas is still one of the most coveted jobs in sports. Location, resources, brand, etc. As for the gender of our next coach, I would be disappointed if at least 70% of the candidates weren't women but at this stage in the program's existence, we need the best coach for the job. There are some good guys out there and there are some bad ones. Along with x's and o's we need a coach who understands that they represent THE University of Texas, and all that comes with the title. On the court, off the court, in the community, etc.

An observation: The coach always gets the heat for recruiting, IMHO. Lived in Carolina when GG coached Duke - all WBB ACC (and SEC) games were televised on cable. I wondered at the time of her hire if she knew how different Texas would be from the Carolinas and most of the ACC. My guess is that she may have assumed that selling Texas would be an easier sell than it was - like Charlie Strong thought about football. A Duke education may or may not be an easier sell than a UT degree.

Well, I believe I said Gail fell on the sword and by that I mean blamed no one but herself. Recruiting at Duke was a different animal than recruiting at Texas. That said, there were some issues... most discussed at length years ago.

In two years Texas will play in one of the finest college basketball arenas in the country.
Texas produces some of the best players in the country.
Texas is a premiere national brand.
    Texas has deep pockets.
I’m pretty sure CDC could hire almost anyone he wanted.
We’ve wallowed in mediocrity (and worse) for too long.
I believe CDC will not tolerate this, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Now we just have to get through this painful season.

When GG was hired one of the early things she did was answer submitted questions. I asked her the very pointed question of how she was going to recruit Texas with all the entrenched great coaches. Blair, Mulkey, and I believe Sharp was still at Texas Tech. I mentioned we knew she had brought the Tennessee assistant/Kentucky HC to Texas. But no Texas Ties. As I was an AAU coach at the time I asked how she was going to connect to that Texas scene. She responded adequately that she understood the challenges but had a plan that would work. No details. It didn’t work. She did bring in McGee from California. I believe she understood but underestimated the challenges. As I remember it, she owned up to that as she left. I don’t have any knowledge of any limitations placed on her. There could have been as some have hypothesized.

Lots of excellent comments about the history of our program. Not going to add more. This program in the 2020 era is not in need of tweaking. Radical change is required. Embracing Texas place in women’s college history and Title IX needs to continue. My fair and biased opinion is similar to others expressed about the best coach regardless of gender. Taking it in more detail, in order to move into the future with new vision, new culture, new stadium, etc. a different type coach is needed. I have offered previously that that there are not enough great women coaches available. Sad but true. And more men are filling that gap. I do feel a male coach is one radical change that is necessary at Texas. Just like in softball and previous volleyball. I will be VERY happy if a top national female coach will come. However, for the future recruits I believe it is important to show them that it will be different next year and beyond. I believe CDC is smart enough to understand. He should listen to and respect the old guard but make the hard decision to go a different direction.

Dreading this season so am thinking of some past glories. While on the subject of GG.

Big 12 tournament. Down 20 points at the half to Baylor. Came back to beat them with the largest turn around deficit in tournament history if not mistaken. What a thrill. Think is was Gail’s first or second year. Can’t remember.

Also GG. Final season game against Aggy before they left the B12. Winning meant we also had won the State Farm trophy. (Might have the name wrong). They had to come and get Gail and the players out of the locker room for the presentation because no one on that squad knew there was a trophy having not won it before.

Years earlier under Jody. A buzzer desperation shot by a little freshman guard to beat Tennessee. Dynamic #22 Nina Norman. Read somewhere she went to Medical School eventually. Still my favorite player but nearly tied now with Brooke McCarty.

Got a favorite game? Who is your favorite player? Here is an all-time roster Women's Basketball All-Time Roster

"Growing up, I didn't have much and I didn't come from the best neighborhood," Norman said. "UT definitely opened up the door for me as far as traveling the world. As soon as Coach Conradt got her hands on me, she taught me how to act and react to things, and I learned proper manners. I didn't have that knowledge. Coach always used a lot of big words and I had no idea what they meant. I would always try to remember them to look them up or ask my teammates what they meant. I also learned how to deal with many different personalities and get along with people. Basketball is something that has been a force in my life that has pushed me forward. I'm grateful. Without basketball, I have no idea where I would be right now." - Nina Norman

    We are Texas. :hookem:
