This happened in 2010 when Mack let a bunch of coaches go then couldn’t get the big timers to come!! Hopefully Herman nails this! Remember Duane Akina then Jerry Gray, then Akina again???Paul Chryst was gonna be our offensive coordinator??? Yea!!

History repeating itself ...... usually when head coaches replace coaches out of fear of losing their job...they end up losing their job....Its mainly because candidates know they are looking at working for a 'dead man walking', thus don't take said job. Usually end up with coaches who are worse than the ones they canned, and things don't get better....

When in Herman's situation, you have to evaluate your coaches in year two and if things are iffy, you make the changes then. Beck looked iffy last year and Orlando was so-so. Had Herman fixed his offensive or defensive problems prior to this year we could have won two or three of the games we lost. 9-3 record would have saved err'body....With a bowl win we'd have finished 10-3 and Herman could have claimed improvement over 10-4, even though missing out on CCG. Water under the bridge now....

As I see it (and I don't "know" anything) the real change needs to come from Herman. I've read too many stories saying the players don't like him, and that he really doesn't like the players either, unless they perform. Conditional love? IMO, that just doesn't fly with most people. There's this thing called chemistry on successful teams. X's and O's are only part of the deal. That's the rub here, IMO. Leopards can't change their spots. Or is it zebra's can't change their stripes.
Hopefully, you get what I mean.

I don’t often agree with you Majestic, but I think you are spot on here.

Herman was not proactive in dealing with his coordinator problem. If he was he could have fired only one last year, which would have made the difference this season and he would look like a competent captain in charge of his ship.

Instead he let the problem fester until he was forced to turn everything over, and now it looks like he is a captain of a sinking ship.

I am very disappointed in him because one only needed to look to the last failed HC at Texas to know that having not one, but two weak coordinators, and not addressing the issue proactively, would doom him. Seriously this is exactly what Strong did.
Everyone knew we could have done better than Watson/Bedford back then, and everyone knew we could have done better than Beck/Orlando now. But these two coaches were comfortable with their guys.

I wonder who will want to come and what lengths we will have to go to to get him. I also hope Herman can grow and be able to hire someone as an OC that has the skins on the wall that he can defer to. And won’t be afraid to tell TH when the shinola is really ****. Because I don’t think TH really knows the difference. He thought he had a championship football team this year. You can’t demand excellence if you don’t know what it looks like. Even Mack Brown, at his best, brought in some guys like Dick Tomey to mentor him.

It is characteristic of great leaders to surround themselves with the best possible talent, set expectations, and let them work. Maybe Herman truly thought he had the best, I don’t know.

Didn't Saban get rid of Major and Kevin Steele after the first season? He doesn't mess around when he see's a problem brewing.

    This is true often^^^.

One exception to this is Coach O at LSU. His revamp there with the assistants he hired worked very well.

Our hopes lie on the possibility that TH can do this well. Whoever comes here will be assured of working with good talent. Recruiting is going well, and the cupboard is NOT bare by any means.

I am sure he did. I know he would not have hamstrung himself. But I think its part of Herman's arrogance. We (as in the University and all its resources) opened our coffers and said "go get anyone you want". He said, "Sure but nah I got my guys."
I bet he genuinely thought TO was going to be a hot commodity and believed Beck just needed another shot.
Its all hindsight, but a lot of us voiced our doubts at the beginning. Orlando came out of the gates and silenced the doubters but it should not have taken 3 years to figure out Beck was not worth his salt.

Coach O didn't wait until his *** was in a vise before acting. He did it year two like I said you should. Had he kept the same offense etc, he would probably be fired as of this week; but he made changes to the staff that fixed his major issues.

Did anyone fire an assistant after a 10-4 season and a major bowl win?

Orlando and Beck weren't terrible, but maybe they weren't the best. I remember after year 1, I saw a lot of posts worried that someone would steal Orlando to be a head coach somewhere else.

I hate to keep comparing to LSU, but they did. Saban and Stoops have also upgraded assistants after a good year. worked out pretty well for them

Question to ask yourselves: Has our HC been demanding excellence of his staff?

Orgeron is a great example of a coach getting it right after getting it wrong. He was abysmal at his first head coaching job in the SEC. Now he is close to top of the heap. Like every kind of professional, some coaches learn from mistakes and get better. Some lose their confidence and some can't adapt. I'm optimistic about Herman's self-confidence and ability to adapt.

Please don’t confuse Brady’s move from NOLA to Baton Rouge with some miraculous epiphany that Orgeron had. His “epiphany” was a meeting in which he was told that Brady had been hired and was on his way. He could make the announcement or it would be made for him.

Wouldn’t shock me if Orgeron lasted two more years, somewhat like Gene Chizik at Auburn after Chizik won an NC. The difference may be that LSU is hauling in the talent. Perhaps Cajuns like to play for Cajuns...?

    Duke,

Look down that roster and tell me how many coonasses you see. A couple of walkons? Totally agree with you about Orgeron's tenure. The powers that be have Brady (Emsinger goes with Ed) and Aranda are sitting back jockeying for position.

I hoped that's why Aranda wouldn't consider Texas, but no one will confirm that.

Nope..They were terrible. Year one TO was good, but going nutz with the 3-3-5 and late blitzes from El Paso was foolish. OCs figured him out and he didn't adjust. Beck was bad and got worse after GDGD showed up this last year to practice....When I saw that on LHN, I said ," Oh no..here comes that sideways passing game we used to do so much.' ...and THERE IT WAS this season. SMH
