LHN showing 1986 UAB game. So few people in the Drum. Hope we never go back to those days.

I watched the game. Nothing to complain about.

We got bogged down on offense for about the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. So what?

I didn't get to watch the game, but here's my take. Don't get me wrong because I'm happy we won.

Over 50% of our shots were from 3-point land and we made 44% of those. This falls right in line with every other game in the fact that we will live and die by the three.

I really hope we can stay hot behind the line but last year proved teams who can defend the three will shut us down because its all we know. As it is we're 7-1 which is better than 6-2 where I thought we could be, but I'm still not a believer that once we hit conference play we will compete. I said in the preseason thread that Shaka set up the schedule to have a lot of easy wins in the first ten games. We'll see how we continue to improve or not as we go.

We hit a high percentage of our 3 pointers because we were moving the ball very well, and usually taking the three in rhythm and when it was warranted. Reliance on the 3 point shot breaks down when there is no ball movement and you fail to force the defense to collapse or overload one side due to help requirements prior to taking one.

Good teams who play strong zone defense will be a problem for us because it will be very difficult to make their zones respect our inside game. I had hoped Baker would be a presence that would force zone teams to collapse, but so far he has been pretty much a non-factor. In fact he didn't get any playing time last night. Jones is looking really good instead, so that's a pleasant surprise, but he's not a zone collapsing inside presence either.

With all that said, overall this team appears to be better than last year's team, though I am not willing to definitively state that yet, due to the relatively weak non-conference schedule we have played.

Yeah this nonconference slate is all sorts of meh. High Point is clearly one of the worst teams in the country, and A&M might be our 3rd or 4th worst opponent of the entire season, if you could believe it. Playing them at a neutral site... you never know what could happen. If you believe the RPI or Sagarin or whatever, we should get out of the nonconference schedule 11-1 (not including LSU in the SEC/XII show down).

But even if we are 11-1, I think the Big 12 is going to show the flaws of the squad. We're anywhere from 6th to 9th in the conference using different metrics right now. KSU is the only team that "seems" worse than us on paper. Let's say we actually are 6th... that leaves room for approximately 10 losses and a record of 20-11 or 19-12 depending on what happens against LSU. It's probably good enough to get into the tournament, but not great either. And considering it's padded by close wins against horrible teams like McNeese, then maybe that makes Shaka/CdC geniuses for scheduling that way, but playing good teams like we used to with Michigan State or UNC or someone like that would be a better barometer of how good we actually are.

Hoping Will Baker to be a force inside is not the right expectation. Will is known for his 3pt shooting. In high school, he was the tallest player on the court, during those years his size was an advantage. Now that he is playing with 3-4 guys close to his height and jumping ten inches higher than him. He won't be much of an inside threat this year. Once he gets his 3pt shots dropping he'll be a good contributor. Also, his feet look very heavy when he moves compared to the other athletic bigs on the team.

Congrats to the Horns on the win. They played hard, and put up the W.

The offense had a good night shooting--especially from beyond the 3 point line. That won the game. Our 3 point shots hit at our highest % of the year.

This high % will not be maintained through the next game, much less B12 conference schedule. Our players repeatedly eschewed driving to the hoop, refused to roll hard on pick and rolls, and took the jumper rather than passing for a sure layup.

I was complaining to the TV screen throughout the game for repeatedly about refusing to take the points in the paint. Had we done so, run a more balanced, disciplined offense, the Horns would have won by 20+ points.

If we continue this pattern, and I fear we will, we'll be lucky to go .500 in conference.
