It could be academics. I for one sure don't know which recruits can qualify and which cannot. It's supposed to be confidential. Then you have the past decade or so including Mack's last couple, three years. We have not projected anything that would attract a top recruit bent on winning a national championship and being prepared for a career in the NFL. Finally, there may be a snootiness factor. OU seems to have a real bad-***, mouthy, cocky environment. There just seems to be a difference in the culture/climate surrounding the program and certain players are just going to go for what OU projects. They also have been winning consistently.

Don't ask me about Aggy though. Talk about a dog whistle. There is a culture there that, as they say, "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it.”

If your a good coach you gotta love when Texas is looking for staff because if your name is even floated around as potentially getting an interview your going to get paid regardless.

FSU -- Norvell continues to solidify his staff. This guy wastes no time. Odell Haggins will stay at FSU, coaching the DL and will have the title "associate head coach" (whatever that means).

Georgia -- Matt Luke may join Kirby Smart's staff as an OL coach.

Memphis -- Memphis' new interim HC, previously Memphis' OL coach, Ryan Silverfield, is getting some buzz as a full time HC.

UNLV -- Marcus Arroyo (Oregon OC) is the current main man of interest and the odds-on favorite to replace Tony Sanchez. Also getting some buzz for this (so-so at best) position are: Matt Canada (former LSU OC), Graham Harrell (USC OC), Troy Taylor (Sacramento St.), Ruffin McNeill (Okla LBs), DeMarco Murray (Ariz RBs), among other Western-region coordinators and position coaches. IMHO, Arroyo might improve his long-term position by holding out for something better than this commuter basketball school... Like Colorado State, for instance. Or wait for a PAC opening.

Old Dominion -- hires Ricky Rahne (Penn St. OC) as their new HC (who cares, I know...)

Schools still looking for a new HC: Memphis (see above), Colo. St., FAU, Boston College, Fresno St., UNLV (see above), App. St.

Charlie Strong--not rumors, just an idea.

A good place for Charlie to land might be as a defensive position coach at Arkansas. He's from Arkansas and has deep roots there, which would help with recruiting. He was clearly in way over his head as a HC at Texas, but he has some defensive coaching skills.

Agree but with the money he has acquired does he feel the burn to coach again?

A fair point. Who knows, after a year or two on the golf course or fishing at the lake, he may get bored and want to coach again.

He was obviously the wrong guy to be HC at UT, but he has some valuable coaching skills on the defensive side of the ball that someone will take notice of.

There had been a string of poor hires at ou between Barry and Bob; And a string at poor hires at atm (Bear Bryant the exception) from the inception of the school until forever; And a string of underperforming hires at Alabama between Bear Bryant and Nick Saban; and at Notre Dame between Ara and the current coach; and at USC between Pete Carrol and ...

And a questionable string of hires between Fred Akers and Mac. And the jury is still out on TH.

Slam dunks in hiring coaches is rarely a sure thing, no matter which school is doing the hiring.

    So what was your point.

Just heard Aranda is in the mix for Colorado State and UNLV. Could have a huge impact for LSU playoff chances.

Aranda doesn’t seem like the granola type, or a guy that drives a Subaru.

UNLV is a dead end. No fans, no support, however, I did have one of their coaches tell me they could pay players $300-500 a day and claim they parked cars at a casino

Notre Dame/OU/TAMU/Texas all hired their first person of color as head coach so those universities could say they had done so. The next person of color hired at that school will probably not be hired just so they can say so.

All of the coaches you mentioned (except ou) had very good records at the schools where they were working before the hires. How do you know they were hired because of race?

Each of them was the first (and so far, only, black head coach for their schools)….whatever major university has not done so will be under pressure to do so when the current coaches (white coaches) are losing...

I am not sure Aranda is the best thing since sliced bread. LSU gave up 37 pts and 611 yds (402 rushing!!!) to Ole Miss. They gave up 541 yds and 41 pts to Bama with Tua at about 60% including an inexcusable 80 yd td in last 2 minutes of the game that gave Bama a chance. Even the lowly Longhorns racked up 530 yds and 38 pts against them.

So if one of the coaches you mention had won, like the coach at Stanford, who was also the first black head football coach at that school, he wouldn't have made your list, I guess. Because you're only including coaches who did poorly.

TH and CS were at mid level schools and did well. They were both coordinators at P5 National Champs (UF and OSU). Their histories prior to being hired here were pretty similar. In fact Stoops was hired at ou with a vita less impressive than either.

I'm not convinced that the hires you mentioned were race based hires. Texas hasn't hired the best coach available in 45 years, maybe never. DKR was not widely thought the best coach available when he was hired. But he was a great hire. And UT made a very good hire in Mack Brown.

UT left Saban at Bama. Meyer may be the best coach unemployed now. But according to people who know something, he may be the worst person. Chris Pederson may be the next best Coach unemployed. He ain't coming.

ISU, BU, osu, ou (and maybe tcu and ku) all appear to have better coaches than UT. I don't know why that is.

Maybe TH turns this ship around and proves he's one of the best in the B12. That would be great.
When CS and TH were hired the person(s) who did the hiring knew at the time that neither was the best available.

Carry, I agree with everything you said but the statement above. In the case of TH many would argue that indeed he was the best available at the time.

You are right. I may have misspoke. I was trying to say that Saban was the best coach, and we whiffed on him when Mack was let go.

TH was well thought of, but there were coaches who were considered "more" proven and coaching at upper tier schools at that time. They were employed, and not looking to leave where they were at.

I don't know if we could have hired one of them away from the schools they were at or not. I don't think we made a serious run at any of them. But even if we had the chances of getting one was very slim.

    Duke,

I wouldn't say Herman was the best available, but he was the "most desirable" for the timetable we had to work with. While I won't begin to speak for Mike, he had a delicate timetable, and no one wanted a public rejection.

Are you telling me the BMD's didn't sign off on Strong? Powers told them it was Strong and if they didn't like it they could shove their money up their ***?
