When there are job openings, and your assistants and HC are on EVERYONE'S short list. I know we have had a couple.
Who and when have any of our coaches been truly preyed upon ? Looking back there haven't been too many.
When our head coaches are fired, you don't see them being grabbed up by other Power 5 schools before the pink slip gets cold.
Where were Akers, McWilliams, Mackovic, Brown, Strong the year after they were let go ?
What OC/DC were pursued hard by other schools while at Texas ?
One reason we don't get the top flight guys ......We wait too long before acting and hiring the right guys. We hang on to the so-so or mediocre coach instead of going after the right guy. When our defense was ok but not great we stuck with Orlando.....We knew our offense wasn't up to snuff, but stuck with Beck.....Would Saban settle ? Would Dabo settle ? Would Meyer settle ?. NO.....If they don't have top - notch guys they find someone else asap before it hits the fan.
We hire people who hire buddies, and are content with their multi-million dollar salaries .... Is Herman going to go get the best out there ? Can he ? It falls back on when you go after them. It may be too late.

George Bailey No beans in my chili, thank you

Given CDC's history, hiring people who hire their buddies may be a thing of the past. I just can't believe that he won't be involved in getting the right people here.

It's widely known that Greg Davis had to sleep in a different safe house every night to stay one step ahead of his suitors.

    Maj,

While you are correct for the most part, Fred went straight to Purdue two weeks after being fired, even if it was over the objections of his closest friends.

Chiszk left to be HC at Iowa State.

Bobby Jack was grabbed up by OU

Leon Fuller went to be HC in Ft Collins, aka Granolaville

Lest we forget, David's mental midget went to not so much success as as an assistant at SWT.

I think it's sort of a luck thing.....who knew Nick Saban was going to be lights out when he was at Michigan State? who knew Urban Meyer was go be great when at Bowling Green? I think Herman can be a winner here, and really don't know who is the next Dabo/Urban/Saban/Day that's lingering out there under the radar....

No we don't, but I am not willing to bet $25 million on a single roll of the dice to find out

Will always defer to your knowledge SH, but in this day and age is $25 million really that much?

Too much for an unqualified, can't get it done waste of space.

I have confidence that CdC has the ability and contacts to get it done.

Keep in mind, Deloss NEVER hired or fired a football coach.

Guessing you're meaning the BMD's/BC's/non university employees.....

Hope the people with $ start making the right decisions to get the program to elite status.

Since DKR stopped coaching in 1976, from 1977-2019 (43 seasons) Texas has won 8 conference championships: Akers (2), McWilliams (1), Mackovic (3), Brown (2). One national championship in 2005 (Brown).

Either the non-athletic directors are non-geniuses when it comes to picking a football coach (or everyone disagrees and they hire the lowest common denominator) or (and I think this is the problem), Texas cannot convince the best players at each position to come play in Austin because we have the wrong coach or the wrong vibe or the wrong philosophy when it comes to winning football (ELITE winning football)….

Wow only 8 CC in 43 years! ou has 5 in a row :whiteflag:

In response to the original post...My opinion on why our coaches don't get picked up by other major programs is because, if you can't win with the talent Texas gets, then you can't win with lesser talent.

For those of us who witnessed the DKR Death March first hand, many will speak the heresy in private, that he stopped coaching before 1976.

Just a point of clarification. And a reminder that when he began dropping hints that he was thinking of walking away, no one thew themselves in front of the door and said "Oh please Coach...don't go!!!!"

Harsin is HC at Boise State. Your assumption is invalid.

Is Boise State a major program? Didn't he go to Arkansas State first?

I think when Herman formed his staff, Orlando was on everyone's short list for his demeanor alone, even though his X's and O's weren't highly prized. Mehringer almost took a HC job in FCS last year.

I think he brought in Drayton and Giles because there would be continuity at the position coach level, knowing that they've pretty much always performed the same service. Same with Hand.

I think you're right about Herman. I certainly hope so. As for the next Dabo/Urban/Saban/Day, keep your eye on Norvell at FSU.

The fact that Herman is waiting despite the pressure on him to get the right coach is a good sign. But if Herman makes the right hires and lets them do their jobs (like Dabo Sweeney). He could have a good season next year and be off to the races after that. You cannot assume failure. By the same token, you cannot assume success. But TH is 46-19 coaching UH and UT. That is a good record, and he is sitting at 3-0 in bowl games. I know this year was no Bueno. Its like some fans cannot accept any mistakes. Like TH cannot be human because of his salary. It does not work that way in business, owners and CEO's can be human. They don't get fired for one bad year. I haven't seen it in business and I have seen ALOT!
I think Herman gets some good hires and UT has a better year in 2020. We'll see.

It is a good sign only if he hasn't been turned down by everyone he has offered a job. We will not know until the hires are announced.

Norvell hasn't won a bowl game yet and won't win one this year (since he's leaving for FSU, gotta get that recruiting going)….

Which I agree with completely but good luck getting the 95% who think it's all about coaching that post here to rethink their position.

Hard to rethink the position when you lived through the Mack Brown era. TWO conference championships, one National Championship, with more "Jimmys & Joes" than almost anybody in the country. I shall concede that much of that was on lardass ***** dog Madden and our annual "Texas is the softest team we played". Mack and Madden are the reason our kids have trouble getting drafted.

Seems like anyone we might consider happens to be signing or accepting raises and extended contracts at their present location.... The wait may be on if the regents and BMD will fork over big $$$$$ to get someone Herman wants. It could be someone who is wanting us to wait until after their bowl game ,etc....if any of those are the reason we are waiting, so be it. Fans don't mind waiting for someone who is noteworthy and will make a recruting splash. If we wait and wait and its announced that we hire someone 'meh'...That will suck.
