Alright, well, with the regular season wrapped up and some time to think before the bowl games I was considering just some of the things I was wrong about at the start of the season. I'll start my own crow buffet off by giving Ed Orgeron and his offensive staff the metric ton of respect they deserve. From all appearances it looked like Orgeron was gonna go out just like Les Miles did by failing to modernize his offense. Even when he
hired Brady I figured it was just window dressing and when the going got tough LSU would go right back to old school tendencies. They didn't. They took the college football world by storm and man was I wrong about that one.

Crow's on the menu so pull up a chair! :hookem:

When did the going get tough for LSU ? Their offense was lights out all year other than against a very very good Auburn defense, but Auburn had NO offense, so the going wasn't ALL that tough against them.

    Sapo,

I was convinced that this was Ed O's last season in Baton Rouge. I even had a lunch at Fleming's with two former regent's in Baton Rouge. The question was asked, "who do you think we should get in December".

I'm not a fan of either one, but either is really good when it's someone else's credit card. My LSU friends in Baton Rouge are friends with the owner, and they can usually be found at the bar by 430-5.

Exactly my thoughts.... preseason, think I predicted 10-2 for this team. The effort and closeness of the loss to LSU gave most of us confidence of a strong finish... fools gold.

Finishing 7-5 with egregious losses to TCU and ISU left me very gruntled.

Yep. I thought we'd take a step back this year...but not as far...and more importantly not in the manner that we did. I was wrong there too....

Speaking of wrong and more wrong, I thought surely... I mean it just has to happen.... this will be the year Harbaugh finally gets the Ohio State monkey off his back. :e-face-tears:

Yeah, I too thought @ Ann Arbor, this will be the year Harbaugh finally gets a razor thin vicktree over the hated buckeyes. Nope. Frankly I don't think he will get a win over them before he's gone....

Grier did better than expected with his defense and got about 3 UT assistant coaches fired.

Joe ain't that slow or picked up about .4 in his forty time this year.

Offensive Line went on a walkabout after OU for a few games.

I have more crow to eat than anyone.

    1. I down played the effectiveness of the LSU passing game and our ability to slow them down.
    2. I was overly optimistic about our ability to replace 8 starters on defense.
    3. I was very high on our defensive staff's ability to generate a pass rush by blitzing. Wow was I wrong about this.
    4. I was over the top about Several offensive players especially Sam and Collin Johnson
    5. I predicted a 1 loss season and going undefeated against LSU and blowu.
    6. I predicted a playoff appearance.
    7. I predicted Sam would be invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony.
    8. I predicted a top 20 defense and offense this year. Statistically I thought it was possible being in the Big 12 with so many teams replacing key guys on offense and Texas bringing back so many on offense.

Now I'm completely depressed...I hate crow.

AB, your crow is admirable. I just think your optimism is about two seasons early....too young and not deep enough to accomplish all that you predicted/hoped. I want you in my corner when the chips are down....

With my perfect 20/20 hindsight, I see you are correct, but coming off of the Georgia win, I was feeling very good about our chances for doing all the things I thought we would do.

Keep in mind, in the Big 12, just about every good team was replacing their quarterback, and the teams that weren't were just not good. We were bringing back Ehlinger who had just had a breakout year. We had lots of receiver talent and our Oline seemed to have turned the corner as a unit. We had a talented RB we could lean on. In my mind, all the pieces were in place to have a top 20 offense.

I realized we had an inexperienced defense, but I thought we had some of the best safeties in college football and Orlando seemed to be very effective at getting to the QB with blitz packages that were very hard to scheme against. I knew we would struggle at corner, but I had no idea how poor our pass rush would be. Again, my prediction was base more on Big 12 offenses experiencing growing pains while the Texas offense would be unstoppable. Again, I was wrong on so many levels.

Going into next year, I think our biggest advantage is that our new OC and DC will catch some teams off guard. That will help in the strategy departments. Couple this with the fact that we are bringing back a lot of starters on both sides I have hope we can turn it around. I expect we will bring back 8 starters on defense and 7 starters on offense. Sam will be a senior, Ingram will be a Junior. We have 3 really good receivers coming back plus a few talented guys behind them. Big question is the offensive line. Will Cosmi come back, he graded out very well and might jump to the NFL. If he comes back, we will have 3 very good starters in Cosmi, Kerrstetter, and Angilau and maturation of some of our younger guys and we should have a pretty solid offensive line next year.

Of course none of this makes a bit of difference if we cannot find a competent OC to run things.

Defense is a wait and see, we have a lot of returning parts, but who knows how the staff is going to bring them together. I'm hoping for a lot of improvement, but I will settle for a little improvement. Is it unrealistic to expect a top 40 defense? Top 60?

    1. I was highly skeptical of LSU's offensive coordinator's ability to make the LSU offense really good.
    2. I thought our OL would play a lot better than they did. Note: up until the OU game, they played pretty well, including against a very good LSU D front. Then the slide way downhill commenced... It still baffles me, and I still tend to attribute it to predictable play calling. But it happened.
    3. I thought Baylor would break even, or worse.
    4. I had us at 10-2 or 9-3.
    5. I was excited about our return game.

All of this is tolerable with enough Tabasco sauce and seasoning--except the 10-2 or 9-3 part...

Apparently, LSU's defensive front is their weakness. Who knew? The irony of OU having to be the run it and grind clock team compared to the high flying/no defense LSU is interesting.

I thought Ed O. was not long for LSU as well. I thought UT was 8-3/9-2.

I figured Baylor was back of the pack.
