The whole reason you sign 18 4-star players is because you know about half of them won't pan out. If you sign 25 guys and you get 12 to pan out then you have done very well. This holds true for teams like Texas on up to teams on the level of LSU and Bama.

The real difference between a 3 star 4 star and 5 star is how quickly you can get them on the field. 5'star guys are supposed to be able to contribute from Day 1. 4'star guys generally need a redshirt year but give some early help. 3'star guys need to redshirt and get stronger or get more coaching before they can contribute. They see the field in year 2 or 3 in the program.

Below a 3'star and they are projects that might contribute as juniors or seniors.

There are a lot of reasons why a guy doesn't pan out injuries, grades, muff, luck. It's just important to know that it's normal to see 50% of you class fail. That is the difference between Texas and a team like Tech or TCU. Texas gets twice the number of 4/5 star guys as they do so when one fails we have another to take his place, and that is the current difference between Texas and say Bama and LSU. They have even more than we do.

Look at the AS top 55 in four or five years. About half of them will never either start, or transfer to a lower team, make much impact at all, or finish playing football.

The attrition is high among even the most talented. Some quite frankly peak in high school.

Well then who is and who cares? It is a fantasy projection. It does not always correlate who performs on the field. Look at Bru, he was seriously ill this year. 'Bama's #1 RB never saw the field due to injury. It happens everywhere but neither those nor transfers change the fantasy ratings of the recruiting classes.

Anyway, let us return to the 2021 Texas Recruiting class which this thread is about and leave the other woiulda, coulda, shoulda topics elsewhere they belong.

As long as we keep Milroe happy he is going to be our best recruiter in this class and a guy others will rally around.

We have to win next year and that means a conference title, nothing less. We do that and the heat is off of Herman.

Here is my wish list for that class. Keep the 7 we got and add to it.
    RB - Camar Wheaton
    OT - Tommy Brockermeyer
    OT - Savion Byrd
    DE - Landon Jackson
    DE Tunmise Adeleye
    WR - Queydarius Davis
    RB - LJ Johnson
    WR - JoJo earle
    LB - Clayton Smith
    LB - Kendrick Blackshire
    DB - Ishmael Ibraheem
    DB - JD Coffey
    OL - James Brockermeyer
    OL - Bryce Foster

It's not out of the realm of possibility but it is just a wish list I also recognize that some guys will fall off while others will jump up. This is going to be a bigger class of 25+.

OT - Savion Byrd #3 in TX
DE - Landon Jackson #4 in TX

WR - JoJo earle #17 in TX
LB - Clayton Smith #20 in TX
LB - Kendrick Blackshire #21 in TX
DB - Ishmael Ibraheem #22 in TX

Ath - Bily BadAss #16 in TX
OLB - Derrick Harris Jr #29 in TX
OT - Hayden Conner #38 in TX

Ath - Juan Davis #60 in TX

    So...
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 28, 29, 38, 49, 52, and 60

So glad we got Bijan. I was a little pessimistic. But knowing more about his character and him generally I can see why he kept his word. I am not saying that those who changed their mind do not have character. It is a tough decision.

But Bijan has that introspection and self assuredness that many his age lack.

I think his influence in the locker room will be very profound.

Take a look at the top 20 instate this recruiting cycle. Specifically look at the top ten. We did a terrible job of getting the top guys in state to stay. We need to turn that around next year. I don't care that we didn't get Demas and Evans as I see both of them as cancer in the locker room, but we got 2 of the top 10 guys, that is inexcusable.

We have to turn that around next year.

Demas and Evans may be a real problem with their respective programs.

Better to get the guys who want to play for Texas than the ones who are looking for an NFL farm school. Projecting a program's future W-L record based on the high school ratings of its players is like driving forward while only looking in your rearview mirror.

When you are talking about recruiting, you are talking about a numbers game. The reason you take two quarterbacks in a cycle is because you have better odds of one of them panning out. The reason you take 18 4'star players is because you are hoping that 9 of them will pan out. To say I only want guys who want to be Longhorns is silly and will get you a class of 2'star kids, I saw that in the 80's. I remember back in 85 we couldn't get anyone off of the Texas top 100 much less the national top 100. If a kid doesn't want to come to Texas then I want to know why and what we are doing to fix this perception. If you want Texas to play big time college football then you have to accept that we need kids that have aspirations for playing in the NFL and want to go to a school that can get them there.

And right there you've lost the whole purpose of college football. Very few of these kids will make it to the NFL. The purpose is to give them a chance to compete and get an education and be a good member of society.

What you are describing is an NFL farm team. I would never want that for Texas. I feel sorry for people who need to reinforce their self-worth with the record of their college football team. It just has no relevance whatsoever. It is a sport that everyone should enjoy including the players, especially those who do not make it a profession.

Ultimately, it should be all about college and learning and the experience of competing, not just the football team by itself and certainly not about how many if it's player spent a few years in the NFL before they have to participate in real life, oftentimes unprepared.

Just about all recruits don't think the way you do. You're way of thinking went out before the turn of the century. Recruits are thinking about making big money so they want to go where the college is most successful and stable which is Texas's problem right now. We are not exactly stable and successful right now. They also want to be coached up and recruits believe that if a team does not win a lot their coaches are not the best position teachers. Winning breeds success and top recruits and I think it's all about play-calling, offensive and defensive. My goodness we shouldn't be near the bottom in pass defense with the secondary personnel that we have even if we are in the Big 12.

    BOLH,

Sorry, but you have obviously never recruited, sat in a recruits home, or attended a commitment announcement. When a recruit says, "I chose Florida State for the education and it has the best program in the country for my major". In fact FSU is graduating only 15% of players, and that educational opportunity is ranked 93rd in the country. (Using FSU as an example)

These kids buy into the ******** being shoveled by the coaches, but many buy into the parties and sex being provided on visits. Few of the players get the hard cold facts, just hear what they want to hear.

I don't see a kid wanting to play in the NFL any different than anyone in any field wanting to be the best. I'm sure there are a lot of Physicist who want to win a Nobel Prize. I'm sure there are a lot of sales reps that want to win national sales men awards. It's no different for an athlete to want to reach the pinnacle of his sport.

Fact is, Texas is a farm system for the NFL, we always have been and always will be. There is a reason we take pride in being called DBU. It's not because most of our DBs become great insurance salesmen.

NFL is a short term diversion from real life. If you are smart and talented, you get your degree, stash the NFL money and live your life after you are out of the game. George Blanda be honored, but most are out of the NFL by 30 - 33 if they are really good. Earlier if they are average.

Football is a boys game; it is not life. Most want a real life. Athletes and basically all humans peak in their early 20's. They rest of life is delaying the inevitable physical decline for as long as possible.

There are very few kids that want to play for Texas or that dream of playing for Texas that are top players. The best players want to go to an NFL farm school that will best prepare them for the NFL. Now there maybe a lot of three and two star recruits that dream of playing for Texas but the football program and hornsfans including myself want the four and five star players even if we might lose a few. However if we get a good group of coaches that can facilitate success then we won't have to worry about losing recruits. You sir are just too idealistic.

Or maybe a little bit too realistic that fans are just a little bit too gladly sacrificing these young men's life for a few years of entertainment and ego gratification.

It is a bad bargain that is foisted on ambitious young man who think their primary skill is their athletic ability. Bodies usually decline well before minds.
