You could also add the new practice facility and the overall basketball S&C program is overseen by Andrea Hudy. Obviously, Texas has a lot to offer.

Nina Norman was a nice player and young lady. My AAU team got run over by her Houston AAU team in a quarterfinal game in Arlington tournament. That team was loaded as the 4 year starter at Duke then WNBA was the point guard. After she graduated she ended up coaching middle school basketball at Blalack Middle School in Carrollton. My daughter was the coach there before Nina and still teaches there. She says nice things about Nina. Nina left teaching/coaching in the last year to go into business. I guess you could say both my daughter and Nina could have helped the women coaching profession but got burned out.

Austin remains the #1 city on most lists. UT is a premiere University. Our brand is considered elite. Texas should be able to get anyone. But I will say again that many of the names being thrown around are probably not “gettable” or they would have been gotten by Tennessee.

Need to update where Nina Norman is. My daughter says she is working in New York refereeing basketball. She was accepted into a program to develop women into NBA referees. I have been reading where women have been identified by the NBA and their G-Leagues to train women. This year there are 4 women refs doing NBA games. Some day we may turn on to watch MAVS vs Lakers and see Norman giving Lebron a technical. Hope she makes it.

This isn't necessarily true. Word was that Tennessee was not willing to spend a fortune on its next WBB coach (presumably because of the many millions they were on the hook for due to their football/AD debacle). Walz was rumored to have been very interested in the Tennessee job but the AD wasn't willing to beat or even match his Louisville pay.

I think the one thing that Texas has that Tennessee and a school like Louisville doesn’t is a natural recruiting base to recruit to which makes it a little bit easier to recruit. It also helps to save thousands if not millions on a recruiting budget. Almost all of Tennessee players are from out of state.

I'm really curious, then. How did it go down? Did they interview some of the big-money names? Or they couldn't even get an interview with them? Or did they make a top-dollar offer to them that got turned down?

The old guard there is still strong as is the overall fan base. A high profile male was floated until old guard insisted former Vol player but while the search was going many of the ones being mentioned used the opportunity to “renew” their contracts/arrangements with their current programs.

Yes, I think overhaul is in order but Texas has so many attributes, all mentioned in these posts, that "things will get better" may not need to be a selling point to players. I'm not sure potential players pay much attention to program dynamics. I assume that the top-star players are most aware, since they are recruited by the UConns, NDs, etc. and see big crowds, cohesive play and wins. But even talented recruits consider other factors -- the team or player they admired as little dribblers, the team that won last year, which team has the coolest uniforms, which school has family ties.. etc. (I don't have first hand knowledge of recruiting, just opining about the attention spans of today's teenagers ...) I do sincerely believe that we cannot be blinded by our loyalty. Texas has everything necessary to be a top 5 program - but no recent WBB championships. In CDC I trust.

When you are not allowed to keep the ties to Texas Basketball that were in place, you are hamstringed from the git-go...

I agree...AND...you have to wonder WHY she was not allowed to keep those ties. Sounds like someone wanted her to fail.......

Not exactly, my info is that it was an issue with personality clashes previous to GG’s hiring...but we may never know the whole truth, just pray that history does not repeat itself if/when Aston is replaced....

So, let me try to piece all this together:

    - Texas AD Plonsky hired Goestenkors at $1 million a season, making her Top 5 paid nationally

    - Some folks at Texas wanted Gail to fail; so, they prevented her from hiring any of the assistant coaches on Conradt's last staff

Failing would mean losing a lot of money, and having the program and players suffer.

Yeah, that all makes a lot of sense as the buck stopped with Plonsky.

Nope, you got it wrong, but believe what you want to believe, facts are facts, and history is history...I only replied when GG was blamed erroneously...no one “wanted” someone to fail, none-the-less, it happened that way, but that is 95% NOT on her...we are in a different era..moving on now...

Such a stupid take. Tell us who wanted her to fail, if you have the guts.

I can speak with certainty on the matter of her being “sabotaged” when it came to recruiting. There were certain coaches who controlled the AAU scene at the time (and still do today) whom were upset that they were not on the Texas staff. This fomented bad relationship in the summer circuit and even into some HS relationships. The reason people call this a “conspiracy theory” is because they don’t know just how much influence certain people have. Both Ogumikes and Meighan Simmons wanted to come to Texas (I was told this personally by two of the three players) but the backbiting on the recruiting trail was a turn off and they went else where.

For those of us who follow the game, we know how differently things would be today with those three on the same team.

If you are talking about Clarissa Davis, that is pretty well known that she was bitter about not being retained once Coach G arrived. But, that is not someone internal at Texas whot wanted her to fail.

Nneka Ogwumike was always going to Stanford or Duke; academics came first to her parents. Meighan Simmions dreamed of playing for the Lady Vols as a youngster; once Pat Summitt came to visit her and offered her a scholarship, it was check mate. Could they have had interest in Texas? Absolutely. Could Clarissa have influenced them in the opposite direction? Sure.

There were those with tremendous influence over “the pipeline” in the state who were actively working to sabotage recruiting efforts. A lot of bruised egos existed after Conradt’s departure and Gail’s hire. I do not know fully the mistakes Gail might have made to bring that on. I was under the impression it was a surprise to her.

All of this blew the door wide open for Mulkey to establish the ties she needed to continue her rise. Credit to Baylor for taking advantage of the opportunity.

There were players who GG had been told were “a lock” who then did not materialize. If you knew Gail, and I did, you knew that she had been led to believe recruiting would be the least of her problems. After a year she admitted, if you asked her, that was certainly not the case. In the end, she owned the situation and handled her departure with tremendous grace.

We got Karen largely for two reasons:
    1. Her personal relationships with the established good old girl network ( yes- it’s a thing)
    2. Her proven recruiting ties within the state.

It is what it is. But I will always say that GG did more with less while she was here. Her style of play was exciting to watch. I wish it had worked out better.

With Karen, I am up and down, but have no reason to not want her to succeed. Indeed, I sincerely hope she does.

Hypothetically speaking... if CDC is looking to NOT renew KA's contract and has a list of big name targets, then we could all probably guess the names on that list. However what I'd like to know is who would be at the top of the "others" list in case no big name could be pulled away from their current positions. Personally I like Marlene Stallings at Tech and Regan Pebley at TCU. The guy at Kansas is a really good coach, just has nothing to work with. Thoughts anyone???

I think most of you will be really disappointed because I think Karen will get another contract (but admit I don't know a thing about the politics or about CDC).

If we were to get another coach, I certainly don't see one of the obvious big names coming here. Why, if they've got a great thing going where they are? It was a huge shock when Gail came here.

I respect Tennessee for choosing a female coach. I don't understand the encroachment of male coaches becoming the rule rather than the exception in women's basketball. It's not that I'm opposed to men coaching WBB, and theoretically "the best person for the job" makes sense, but I don't understand what this trend is saying about our society or about basketball. Is it that we really think males have better basketball minds than females? Do we think male coaches will attract good players more than female coaches? Or that players respond better to males? Why is this going on? It is puzzling to me.

If we were to get another coach, and it wasn't a big name, and we weren't looking for a male, I think Reagan P. at TCU might be an excellent choice.
