I imagine OU had a little do do with it also although I do not remember the records.

Nebraska football has indeed become invisible in middle America.

Why do we start a conference realignment thread every offseason?
Why not just start a general thread called "Things That Will Not Happen During The Offseason"?

Probably no meaningful changes in B12 until Grant of Rights expire in 2032. The B12 has no incentive to dilute the TV money and they own the TV rights.
Looking at the current SEC contract that renews in 2022 CBS pays $55M and ESPN/ABC/Disney has offered $330M. CBS will look elsewhere for content.
From $55M to $330M+ is a big change and with the distribution of ESPN/ABC/Disney+/On Demand the new contract will be able to put many more live games to watch.
FOX Sports can put in a bid if they want to play.
TV money for live content available over a dozen available distribution channels will have more impact on conference realignment than geographic location bc millions watch TV and thousands attend games.

Wasn't someone discussing the Big 10 TV contract over in a couple of years? And we'd go that way?

It's probably important to look at the wording in the contract for clauses in conference alignment talk. That will tell us more about our ability to move to a new conference or create a conference that can poach other teams.

I think we are on the verge of seeing the last of big money TV contracts, I think you will see schools move to a model of streaming viewership. My guess is national TV stations will buy what they want and leave the rest for regional TV and the internet. Espn Won't pay for SEC teams playing the Sisters of the blind like they are forced to do now.

The demand for original content exceeds supply for entertainment distribution. The live sports genre is one of the most desired forms of new content. It is live, renews every season and has a rabid fan base that wants more product. It can be monetized at multiple levels and branding is easy and inexpensive.

Netflix spent $320M+ to produce The Irishman (2 hours) which can be streamed on Netflix for $9/mo (or free with trial) and has to be replaced with new content.

ESPN/ABC/Disney+ has offered $330M for the SEC football in order to control the amount of new content that the SEC produces each year.

There will be a lot of SEC football available for viewing on broadcast TV, cable, streaming, on demand, mobile and archive. Alabama vs Sisters of the Blind will be available on the ESPN sports pkg for anyone who wants to see Bama play.

Geographic location is needed for attendance not viewing.

The money we pay for entertainment isn't going up as fast as the amount they are spending. We have choices in the entertainment we purchase. I've never seen the Irishman, but I have a netflix account. It's cheap and offers a good value for the money I spend. I unplugged from cable a long time ago and will never go back. I have my Ruku and I get more than enough entertainment there. My oldest son is 26 and he gets all his entertainment through streaming. This is the trend. Companies like Fox or CBS or Espn are going to have to adapt to this new trend or they will die.

I actually think that when Texas loses the LHN they will transition over to a service for streaming purposes like Ruku where they can get 7 dollars a subscription and stream whatever content they desire (within NCAA rules). I think Texas is way ahead of the curve in this regard. Texas goes from owning their own ESPN channel to owning their own HBO channel.

AH - That ship has already sailed.

Like many, you cut cable TV and purchased a streaming device Roku to replace the cable box, purchased internet wifi to replace the Cable copper/fiber line so you could access online, and now purchase content from content suppliers like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ATT TV, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, HBO, ESPN, etc.

The Roku hardware streams the signal that the content providers sell. You can subscribe to Netflix for $9/mo and stream via Roku to your TV screen. You can do the same with smartphones, PCs, laptops, Notebooks, and other streaming hardware like Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Google Chromecast plus Google Chrome, Microsoft Windows, Mozilla Firefox etc.

You have to purchase internet from and ISP and purchase content from a content supplier. Some content is "free" with commercials, HD Antenna and broadcast TV.

The change that has taken place is that rather than purchasing a cable TV service and choosing a bundle of channels of 40 to 1500 channels from Comcast, Spectrum, ATT Uverse or a thousand other cable companies that deliver the content via copper, fiber, satellite etc you are purchasing the content much closer to the source of the producer of the content.

Today ESPN owns the rights to LHN and can offer the LHN via any number of distribution networks and channels that ESPN controls. I get LHN thru my subscription of ATT TV Now streamed thru Amazon Fire TV via ATT Internet. The cost of LHN is included in the price of ATT TV Now. It also includes ESPN and hundreds of other apps, channels etc.

The CFP Championship in Monday Jan 13 th at 7pm. You can watch LSU vs Clemson live on ESPN and online at WatchESPN.

You will pay for access to see the game and the commercials. That is the future of sports TV.

    Go Tigers!

I'm not referring to big events like bowl games or the national title games, I'm talking about the week to week season. Those contracts are going to be over soon. Why would CBS want to pay 50 million a year to show Mississippi State or Arkansas, all they want is Bama and LSU and the like. I think you are going to see these big conference contracts go away and the rise of Conference channels are a more important part of the sports landscape. The networks will still purchase specific games like LSU/Bama, but the day of Iowa State getting 30 million to not be on TV are going to end very soon.

We can sit back and watch how this plays out but CBS has already decided not to continue with the SEC Conference Game of the week on CBS when the current contract expires.
There are 14 FB teams in the SEC that play 12 regular season games and ESPN/ABC/Disney would rather pay more to get an exclusive for ALL that CFB content than bid on just a few top games.
More importantly the SEC wants that $$$.

A decision I think they will regret as time goes on. I think they are committing vast amounts of money to a dead system. Of course if they didn't it would only usher in the changes I'm talking about much faster. Maybe we should be asking why CBS and NBC aren't throwing around the money like ABC.

Yea, and cable TV is having to match. I was ready to switch to Youtube or HULU for TV. Actually like the Youtube interface better, but neither as well as I liked Uverse remote. So called AT&T and got them to cut my bill down to like $10 over what I'd have paid with Youtube. I get more channels and just like the remote more and $10 a month doesn't really hit me anywhere I care about. Now AT&T has to compete so I wouldn't buy their stock.

Agree^^^. You have to watch the pricing of the streaming. The highest-priced AT&T TV Now package is higher than the Spectrum package that includes everything including all of the movie channels.

For me, the only advantage of streaming is the 4K offerings that the cable boxes do not carry.

I live in Austin zip 78727 and ATT Now provides local networks based upon zip code billing address as Regional Sports or Local Networks.

The local networks provided are ABC, CBS, FOX, UNI which are the local live stations.

The regional sports channels are FOX Sports Oklahoma, FOX Sports Southwest (includes Rangers, Spurs, Stars) and LHN.

You can check availability at AT&T TV Local Channel & Regional Sports Network Lookup

I suggest you log out of your streaming account and just check your zipcode. You may only need to update.

Get the AZ schools and Stanford with USC and have a coast to coast Big 14 with an east and west division. Those Pac12 schools would like some B12 money and access to Texas players. Texas and OU would both like to increase their national recruiting profile.

Only way I see USC and other Pac school leaving is if it's to join an entirely new conference. Ditching the ISU, KSU, WVU and the like will allow schools with TV sets to come together. USC, Arizona schools, UCLA, Texas blowu, Okie Lite Kansas, and about 4 others and You have a crazy good conference that is right up there with SEC and B1G. You also open up a recruiting hotbed of Texas and California.

BTW, I love my sound of the new Southwest Conference. I also think a conference like that would attract teams like Arkansas who could be reunited with Texas.

Domers are ACC homers. But if USC and Stanford jump, the odds may be in the new conference's favor.

The academic credibility would quadruple overnight.

That is like saying although I am now cured, I miss having cancer.

The AAC would not accept Arkie as a member right now as they suck so badly.

I don't care about the AAC, I care about having another traditional rival we can play. 6 teams from the Pac and 6 from the Big 12 plus a couple of teams like Arkansas and Nebraska and you have a conference that rivals SEC and B1G.

    I would take
USC, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, Utah and Oregon (No California state schools) Might also add BYU.

Then Texas blowu Okie Lite, Tech Kansas, Arkansas and Nebraska.

Now that is a Soutwest Conference We could even use Arkansas on Turkey day to replace aggy. Nebraksa and blowu can also reunite for another traditional game. Best of all, it give us the following markets. Houston, DFW, San Antonio, Austin, Kansas City, SLC, Phoenix, LA, San Fran, and Portland. And yes, I understand that no one captures the California markets, but those fans are front runners and will carry the conference when USC is good.
